True, but the US is the second largest producer of movies in the world. Not sure about music (a Carlin routine I saw last year claimed 15K CDs/year), or TV.

Still that's a LOT of content (good or bad - that's subjective) that is locked away from US citizens.

I dunno. Unless you're in some specialized field like Animal Biology I just don't see much need. What I've read of ontologies (limited to iaslash, boxes and arrows and the like - not a scholarly program like the one at FSU) makes it sound like a holy grail to me. There is no objective way to permanently organize data that changes, especially in a business environment.

I'm glad the W3 is there, pushing this, but I hope ontologies aren't just a web fad and can mature to a usable component of 'the semantic web'.

(Of course I also hope to one day get back to school or get a job that pays more than my expenses ;P)

    1. Yeah, the mouse. One button. I like to surf using new windows for links and then close 'em down to go back for more links. A single-button mouse doesn't do this and it's a pain in the butt to carry a mouse with me.

    >You said you are using an i-Book. So I am guessing you're carrying a mouse anyway. Easily solved by picking up nearly any third party mouse. Maybe even your Windows or Linux one works (if it's USB)

    2. One desktop. Damn! How can I work with only one desktop? On my Linux box I have 4 desktops; one for email/calendar (Ximian Evolution), one for web browsers, and two for misc apps I pull up (Open Office, GAIM, etc.). How anyone can do useful work without having multiple desktops (accessible with alt-F keys) is beyond me. Is there a way to do this on the MAC. I dunno yet.

Not a true desktop, but Space.app may work for you. See: http://www.versiontracker.com/redir.fcgi/kind=0&db =mac&id=9738

    Great generalization. How Insightful.

Look, the reason most Mac users aren't switching isn't because they are wedded to the past it can be boiled down to one thing: cost. The cost of purchasing new hardware, the cost of purchasing new software, and the cost of changing workflows.

Do you think that a newspaper is going to upgrade to OSX simply because it is available? No. They have a huge investment in their workflow and equipment. They need time to ensure their systems will work under OSX.

You think a family with a Performa is going to switch? Nope. Not if they can get by with System 7/8 while they wait to see if dad might get laid off.

FCOL, OSX doesn't even support most printers or scanners yet. The sound subsystem isn't finished. Nobody's going to spend money on hardware or software until they are sure it is worth the investment. If you work in the A/V field where a lot of the Mac market is, you have to wait.
