What I would prefer to see is my current ability to make unlimited dups of my *original* CD. I don't mind creating "mules" that is copies that then can't be copied, but if I bought it, I shoudl be able to make as many copies as I want/need for personal use and not have them tied to a physical machine.
Do you have a Quartz enahnced vid card? I don't and suspect that since I don't I won't be seeing that increase. Don't recall if Low End Mac or Bare Feats claimed thet video card was the big diff.
My G4 400 did get a boost from 10.2 but I'm hesitant to drop $130 on panther and another $150 on a video card (seems to be the going price ATM for any vid card upgrade).
Step 1: Find a band you do like. Try sample before you buy, friend's recommendations, I-net radio etc etc Step 2: Look at the label. If it is a small or Indie label its likely they will have similar music by different artists. Step 3: Repeat Step 1.
Using this method I've become a fairly regular purchaser of music from Asphodel, Beat Junkie Sound System, Global Underground and Ninja Tune. None are RIAA members so I get great music I like and stick it to the RIAA at the same time.
Note tastes are subjective and not all small labels specialized in one music genre.
Until IE fully supports the format, it might as well be dead. Nobody who wants the Alpha Channel support can use it in IE6 so it pretty much just sits there, an unused option.
Since IE apparently won't be getting an update until the next version of Windows, I don't see much changing.
It also doesn't help that creating PNGs with Alpha Channels isn't as easy as it can be in some apps.
Some rumor sites claim the PPC prices will be lower than Motorola's G4. Who knows for sure? I would think IBM would offer the lowest prices possible to speed adoption of the chip. I have also read on the web that IBM's costs for G3s were lower than Motorola's because their production facilities were better. *shrug* If PPC970 truly is 25-35% lower than G4s its a no-brainer for Apple to use them.
If the prices are that low I wouldn't expect Apple to lower prices though. The pro models have been fairly consistent at their current price point for some time. I'm sure other costs have gone up with new features like Hypertransport, Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 (how much does Intel charge for that?). All o fthis si specualtion until the hardware actually comes out of course.
As for the stock comment, prices go up and down. I seem to recall a stock split a few years back. The stock has gone up recently with the iTunes sales announcements. However I think stock price is one of the least indicators about how well a company is doing - and certainly has nothing to do with the price of mac hardware.
Zimmer created Painter and founded Fractal. That was then bought by MetaTools (home of Kai Krause and the infamous KPT series) which became Fractal Design. Fractal Design then went tits up and had everything sold off to various companies (including some actual owners/programmers like Eovia) including Corel.
Fractal seems to want to create something (they have a cool website - lol) but who knows?
I wish Apple had bought them and feared MS might have. Glad I was wrong on both accounts.
What's the incentive for "that guy" to buy a legal copy later? He already has a free copy. The only reasons are:
1. a guilty conscience 2. buying for a business which pays for its software for fear of legal repercussions.
As for the amateur photographer, why does he need a $700 Photoshop app when the $100 Elements app will do all he needs? Of course, that assumes he doesn't use an even cheaper photo editting app or one that may have been installed on his computer.
Don't forget that student/educational discounts can also apply so Johnny Sixth Grader can learn how to make his photos cool for those PowerPoint presentations he's creating for that science project.
The artists could buy a business account, get a static IP, serve their own website. Sure, it would cost more than a home DSL account, but it could be done.
Just because it isn't cheap, doesn't mean it couldn't be done.
I can only see someting liek this being usable in a handheld or laptop design. You'd have to put two next to each other so you can coordinate the movements, but such a technique would allow you to scroll around a big screen quickly and accurately after a few minutes of practice.
If it required to hands to work it would preclude the use of another input device like a mouse or keyboard.
With GW opening their own stores and driving the indies out of business it further consolidates their distribution.
So your argument only is valid if GW wasn't opening more local stores, which is demonstrably untrue.
I live in a urban center with over 1 million people. A recent GT was held here. There are two stores that sell GW product. One sells almost exclusively GW product (with a smattering of Hasbro/WotC RPG books). Another sells GW merchandise, comics, videos, RPGs, historical and competing mini games etc. If a GW store opened here who would go out of business?
The Free Mike Hawash web site is not run by him, but rather from friends of his that work/ed at Intel.
Your second point is valid, but only goes to prove my point - white = sympathy; dark = must be a criminal.
Regardless of Padilla's past actions being held as he is is not justified. Charge him with a crime, given him legal counsel or let him go. If you have proof of a crime start legal proceedings. There is no need to suspend habeus corpus in that case and Ashcroft knows it.
Sure they know. Remember Jose Padila? His case was in the media for what, 2-3 days?
The American public are sheep. As long as wholesale roundups of middle class whites aren't done and it remains a few people with dark skin, the public won't give a damn.
Note he is not being held for suspected terrorism, but as a material witness. AFAIK none of the stories I have read have seen any charges against him.
Three years ago he did donate $5K to an organization that is now being investigated for links to funding terrorist organizations, but that is not the same as being held as a suspected terrorist.
One must wonder if he didn't have rich friends if his case would even be noticed by anybody.
The files will be in AAC format according to other reports. Quicktime handles it and so will the next iTunes (and therefore the Mac iPod). So if you have an AAC decoder/player you should be in luck, but there is no indication that the files will be converted into MP3 via iPod or iTunes.
That is the exact scenario I envision. As long as I have the original, I should be fine. That's why I safeguard the original and use the copies.

but what of his political influence? Its no surprise the MPAA woldn't pick somebody with no political influence.
"If only there was some device like this already on the market, one that I could play games on and send email and program on, too."
You mean like a laptop?
The passage of the DMCA. Once bypassing any digital protection is illegal then money stream is guaranteed.
Look at all the IP legislation over the past 12 years and the picture doesn't look pretty no matter what the current "standard" is.
His/her disposable money is being spent in another category.

Doh!. It was the gin speaking and clouding my brain. Since MetaTools became Metacreations I wasnt too far off! :)

Ahh yes, the Heritage Foundation. There's an objective group of democrats (small d).

It is on the documentary "Scratch". It's near the end. That was my point, we wouldn't have an entire subculture because of a single patent.
First the DJ scratches, not the rapper.
Regardless, Cool Herc (the inventer of the scratch) has said he wishes he got a buck everytime somebody scratches a track.
If he had patented it he probably would.

Just guessing here.

I listened to TripleJ while in Oz in 2001. It was pretty cool to hear US artists that I couldn't hear on the radio in the US.
OTOH, their feed quality really sucks. Nice place to find good music, but Interet radio does a better job for me.
