What is it IP laws go far to protect? a forcing of people into one model?
Where to protect your rights and inventions you must sue people and protect them under a situation of IP laws that are too old now
Whatever happened to the idea of 'a good name'. A company could live off of its good name and good will by being well known and respected because of it their actions. If they truly have good IP then they will be respected for inventing it and earn more in other areas
that to me and mindshare is worth more than copywriting their invebntions and just making forceful noises about people paying them for it.

I think this is sad on Microsofts part. Their copying apple with a succesful campaign but coming too late to the party. A lot of it is in the timing and I think Apple's switch has done all it can in mindshare
The biggest part of the apple campaign is that people have left the common world of windowsk, one that people dont think of leaving because they see nothing else but MS MS MS everywhere. Then to switch to Apple or indeed anything smaller is a big task and it can be seen as an active choice
For a switch to windows sounds like 'I used to use X but then I joined the herd' and gave in to peer pressure. Its hardly the same thing

Having 2 companies presenting a working solution like this. Not only do we know Linux is a good workable system, but this is a way to present it in its best
Having a working solution already in place works for business. You can say "we have system X already go, and can set it up for you". It shows you are on the ball.
Working for a certification like this is similar. Best solutions combine the strengths. What other pre-made solutions do users see as a good thing? perhaps systems such as linux plus apache. That's another well known one

Great to see some comparison that's more than just framerates in quake
Quality for video output into different devices other than a standard monitor are important. Television is a lesser technology than say a trinitron or LCD monitor, but still there is a great difference from a good card to a bad one.
Getting the most out of hardware is sometimes difficult when you dont fit the standard gamer user profile. I hope to see more reviews like this

Personally I'd much rather me see other developments happening in OSS, than game engine work
There is a lot to be contributed to the world through coders doing work that all can use. There is already quite a few games out, and certainly I feel the current producers do games best. There's an expensive and time consuming culture related around game design and production
Not that they're useless, far from it, but OSS efforts I feel would be best applied to 'more noble pursuits'
Is it really possible to get to microsoft over XP this way?
After all it's been nearly 2 years since its introduction. That's a long time in computing. I would have imagined there was a statute of limitations.
If not, then it sounds rather shaky legally, but then anything that helps shift microsoft sounds good by me at this stage.
It's gotten to the point I don't care if there really is a case or not, they should be shown we really don't care for their practices.

Assembly is a bit pointless these days
While many optimisations can be had with assembler, due to 'hitting the hardware' it causes more problems than it solves.
There's nothing a higher language cannot do that assembler can. The only difference is in levels. And with current hardware speeds, higher level but typically 'slower' languages become 'fast'.
It's curious that in 2003 assembler is still being practiced. I would put this down to a bit of historical interest, than real practical value.
Let apple and microsoft with their more proprietary technology fight among themselves. that's the real 'mantra' of Apple.
And also of Microsoft, and many others.
Unlike some systems, they will spend money arguing and dissociating among themselves. more effort and $$$$ of their customers money spent in a little holy war.

Agreed. I believe AMD could be spelling their own end reducing speeds to under the 2.2ghz like their other processor.
People don't want slow processors that work 'technically fast' they want pure real performance. Adding 3000+ to the name won't change it and it seems they're banking on their older systems almost keeping up to the name, by then adding in a cheaper dumbed down version that goes nowhere near it
It is a pity as I see AMD as the more Open solution there. Not Intel.
While like I can not account or everything bit by bit I know I do a lot of web browsing and I am subscribed to many email lists also.
As well I download quite a lot of open source software.
Many linux distros go through my system as I like to try before I buy so to speak. Except I am not buying, but I am still putting effort into what I use before I can settle on things.
Maybe for you it is but some of us use more data than that
if I were to find myself on those restrictions I would be insensed. Especially as ovber the last few months I usually average at least over 100GB a month
