  2. I Did This!!!! on Would You Take A Paycut for More Interesting Work? · · Score: 1

And it was worth every dime. I left a job that was boring to me and that I was so unhappy with it was a fight with myself to go to work every morning. So I pulled up roots, put my house on the market and moved to a better job location. I was formerly living in Knoxville, TN where the job market sucks. Now I have a job where I do work I love, work with people I like, and I'm excited to get up and go to work every morning. It's worth it, UNLESS the pay cut is so extreme that it would greatly and negatively affect your lifestyle. I say that for me it was definitely worth it and I would to it again if given the same situation.

  4. Re:stick with Computer Science on Tulane University to Reduce Engineering School · · Score: 1

I have to disagree with the prior statement. Having worked in many Sr. positions, and at times, I was responsible for hiring, I believe the IT industry is drying up. People keep saying that IT jobs are suppose to continue to grow exponentially through 2010, but from my perspective I don't see it happening. There is a flood of well qualified IT/CS/CE people in the unemployment line or working a job well beneath their skill level. A dear friend of mine with a CS background is working in the Systems group at a major shipping company that only does troubleshooting and monitoring. Another friend of mine with a Computer Engineering background is working as a helpdesk technician. My suggestion would be to double major, CS and something else you can make your living at. Just MHO, but I hope it helps.

  5. IM Client vs IM Service on What Makes a Good IM Client? · · Score: 1

Well, since you are simply referring to IM client, I would have to say that an almost perfect IM client already exists in GAIM. I have all my accounts logged in in one GAIM session, AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, and Google talk/Jabber. Works like a charm. As far as service is concerned, I believe that Google has the corner on it simply because they have the ability to both IM and make client to client calls.

A slow death for a wonderful movie, which not only did I enjoy as a kid, but I now allow my children to enjoy the same. I have a hard time believing that the musical could live up to the movie, but I guess it's a wait and see situation. I hope they don't ruin a treasured memory from my childhood.

  8. Office on Linux on No Office For Linux, MS Patents Rejected · · Score: 1

First of all, there are a million reasons why you wouldn't run Microsoft Office on Linux and I don't have the time or energy to go into them here, the main reason why you WOULD run it is simple, it's far and away the best office suite on the planet. But, with the onset and continued development of Codeweaver's Crossover Office, there is no need for Microsoft to ever develop Office for Linux, as I can attest, under CX Office, it runs near flawlessly. The only significant problem, that I can recall, is that email management rules did not work under CX Office 4.2 with Office XP, beyond that, it was spectacular. Let Microsoft continue their imbecilic ways and continue to make a way for a niche market, just as they did for CX Office.

  9. This doesn't make any sense on 5 km Range Commercial Wi-Fi Available · · Score: 1

They are talking about doing wireless over 5km distances when things like Wimax hardware is already doing 20km + or -. There is a company in Knoxville, TN and also in Phoenix, AZ that has installed and is starting to sell this extensive wireless service. http://www.wisight.com/ If I'm not mistaken, the Wimax products offer 802.11G speeds at much great distances. So what is the big deal about this technology listed here.

WiMax type solutions are already being deployed in Phoenix, AZ and Knoxville, TN. I know this because I built one of the linux boxes that are going to manage authentication and encryption. Check it out at www.wisight.com. It's the bomb. The guy heading the effort was sitting in my buddies back yard the other day connected back to his house, 10 miles away with no clear line of sight, and was getting 4 Mbps download speeds.

Satellite sucks. You get a decent amount of bandwidth for downloads, but what is the use of high speed internet if you can't game. Besides, he said he currently has Satellite and it sucks because of the latency. I know when I was using DirectPC, I was getting 700 ms ping times.

  12. Overall cost with Linux can be more on Midsize Businesses Not Considering Linux? · · Score: 1

I personally am a systems administrator at a small computer security consulting firm, and I recently built a Jabber and OpenXchange server. Both were time consuming and did not always compile and install like you would hope. I'm still kind of a n3wb linux sys admin, I've only been doing it for about 3 1/2 years, and I don't know how to code or script, therefore some of the erros I receive are very cryptic when installing open source software. I probably put 20 hours in getting the OpenXchange server up and running, and for the price, (what I cost per hour compared to the cost of M$ 3xchange) we could have bought M$ 3xchange and been done with it. Pop in the CD, run the install and tah dah! Two hours later, we are up and running. Plus, I have to be a jack of all trades in a small company like ours, we only have about 30 employees and I'm a one man IT shop. I would have to say that overall cost is probably cheaper when you compare M$ solutions to open source solutions.

  13. 802.11b on War(ship) Driving For 802.11b Controlled Destroyers · · Score: 5, Insightful

First of all, as a Marine that has spent time aboard ships, this seems absolutely ridiculous. They Navy hates automation beyond email. Second of all, this is just asking to get hacked. 802.11b can be received for kilometers. Being on the ocean, one big reflective antenna, you could probably extend this distance to miles with a decent antenna, obviously with great latency, but it would work. I couldn't access the story, but I really hope the Navy rethinks this technological advance.
