    I think the government has a legitimate national security interest in developing a transportation system that does not completely grind to a halt the day someone sets off a few nukes in the major oil-producing areas of the world.

    Hybrid and electric technology is what could make the difference between an event like that being a serious problem and it being a complete disaster.

    The problem is the government is already unfairly picking winners and already subsidizing fossil fuel vehicles
    by failing to require that manufacturers and operators of fossil fuel vehicles pay for the pollution they generate in order to internalize the externalities.

    Have they done any math to check this? Any thought?

    The United States federal excise tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel.[1][2] On average, as of April 2014, state and local taxes add 31.5 cents to gasoline and 31.0 cents to diesel, for a total US average fuel tax of 49.9 cents per gallon for gas and 55.4 cents per gallon for diesel.[3]

    About a 15% tax on energy for gas powered vehicles. What's the energy tax on all those shiny electric plug ins?

    Nope, not following instructions. I think all of those were based in machine learning.

    I guess Google's car is following instructions too, like "drive me to New York", but most would still count that as AI.

    When your Navy is stronger than the British Navy, it's hard to argue that your Navy is for "self-defense".

    That depends on who you might be trying to defend yourself from. China and Russia are the primary threats to Japan, across 500 miles of ocean, and they're in a naval arms race with each other, and China is testing Japan.

    I found a detailed US report to Congress on the huge ramp up of the Chinese navy from 2000-present.

    I don't think it's hard to decide who to bet on here. The US industry that almost entirely went backrupt (except for Ford), or Google, which already has a better autonomous car than any of those bozos.

    If those guys had any brains, they'd saddle up with Google as fast as they could.

    Again... the idea that corporations can have religion is absurd.

    Corporations are groups of people getting together under a charter. Many corporations are based in religion and conscience. Many for profit corporations have elements of religion and conscience. Non profits are generally incorporated as well.

    It's funny. Progressives complain that corporations only worship profit, and then when they act on other values, they demand they only worship profit.

    But there's been some work that shows CO2 levels have to be below 250 ppm for the Earth to drop into the next glaciation. As long as levels are above that the next glaciation will be indefinitely postponed.

    Which would make the release of all the evil CO2 the best thing ever done for human sustainability.

    Medicine, and particularly the Doctor's part in it, is fundamentally an information technology, which would be getting cheaper, faster, better, and more accurate every year but for the state enforced monopolistic shake down.

    Google could replace 80% of doctors with free web app in a year, and a free market in medicine and diagnostics would reduce prices to a tenth of what they're currently.

    If that leads to a job, great, but that shouldn't be the point.

    6-figure debt makes it the point. A debt that you cannot refinance makes it the point. A debt you can't escape through bankruptcy makes it the point.

    Yeah, it's all fine and dandy to talk about education as discovering the wonders of the universe, but few would go into debt 100k for the feel good experience, particularly when it's available to you for free. If you want to discover the universe, a universe of information is available to you on the web. Read it and feel all warm and fuzzy.

    But if you want a family and any financial security, that kind of money needs to *produce* an equal or greater amount of benefit that you couldn't get otherwise.
