premise that evolution had an objective goal, and that we could inpret that goal and hasten things along through selective breeding of humans.

You have it backwards. Evolution favors the "fittest" - In our society that means the people who have the most children: e.g. the uneducated, the religious conservatives.
Eugenics is about using selective breeding to fight against evolution. But not in the way you might think. People are not farm animals.
Eugenics just means providing the right economic incentives, for example free childcare for working parents. Encourage good parents to have more children, and troubled young people to delay parenthood until they get their crap together.
Provide better employment opportunities for young women, so a single mothers benefit looks less attractive as a means of support.
It certainly does not need some panel deciding who may or may not have children.

Two big differences: booby traps often get unintended targets. the drones or gas here would happen only after a human verifies they are real pirates on board, and not just stowaways. Secondly, the law for piracy on the high seas has always been very different to burglary. You don't hang burglars. But lethal force against pirates is fine by me. There are plenty of jokes about RS232, but Apple was even more non-standard with ADB and its predecessor.

Its not the money. Apple is sticking with their history. Trying to play "what would Steve do?".
Was it the first iMac ? Apple removed the non-standard serial ports, and the non-standard floppy drive. All replaced with standard USB ports.
ADB was good riddance, but floppy sorely missed as USB flash drives were still expensive. Apple did it anyway. They wanted to stand out.
Removing the optical drive from laptops is a no-brainer due to weight. Ethernet was not removed before fast wifi was ubiquitous.

Replacing the 3.5mm socket with a non-standard port is more of a worry. Will mean multiple cables and dongles needed for many years.
Not a huge problem, but not much of a benefit either. Unlike RS232, the 3.5mm audio socket "just works". There is good reason why it has outlived all those other ports.
And Apple, please stop obsessively making devices thinner until the engineers have improved battery life dramatically.
