I guess in my idealistic hopes I wanted some producer/moneyguys to just tell Jackson to make it look right and dont deviate from the story as written. Thats it. I think his direction of the script was great, I think the adaptation of the book was piss poor. Just shoot what the books say Pete, the Tolkien story knows where it needs to go, just fuckin follow it.
The sad thing is in one of the few situations where throwing money at a problem would have been preferable (making 6-7 movies rather than 3-4) Just shoot till the whole thing is in the can. I know it's not very realistic.
Just tell me you prefer the Jackson ending to Tolkiens, and we are done discussing it.
Dont forget that Gandalf, while escourting the hobbits home to the shire after the doings with crowning Aragorn etc. Gandalf goes to visit Tom rather than being there when the hobbits face what has happened at home while they were away. Gandalf knew what waited for them I think. If we dont have Tom to justify Gandalf's detour, then Gandalf has to stop and tie his shores for a few weeks or something while the hobbits hurry home.
Since the Shire plot was dropped, though I suppose it doesnt really matter at all. I suppose thats how the movies left me feeling too though, I still hate Jackson.
I guess it's all done and overwith, I suppose I should just move on, but I keep meeting folks who want to talk about it (the movies) and havent read, and feel no desire to do so, the books. It's "Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings" from here on out.
Remember how (before the movies) you would treasure the few conversations you might chance upon about the LOTR. Now I have lots and lots of them, hell I can talk to just about anyone because they have all seen the movies, conversations about the movie are only satisfying if the participants have read the books. And almost none of them have read the books.
I do call myself a fan I guess, and I suppose I will have to deal with you now oh gatekeeper of geeky lit. So given Jackson had one story to work with, how do you explain his shit ending and no finish to the Shire's plot?
I know this was forced on Tolkien by the publishers of the time. I have no idea what if any impact it had of the final book(s), but I do know that Jackson had it all there to work with and didnt do Tolkien's story justice. Jackson did a good job of directing the movies, the visuals were all there, the movies looked pretty much like the images that I saw when I read the text, but where was the fidelity to the story?
You might bring up the money issue, but I would have been much happier paying for twice as many theatre tickets if it meant I got the full story the way it was written. The shield surfing elves and dwarf tossing wasnt helping me look past the plot changes either.
Yeah, Im a fan I think, Im not so sure who YOU are a fan of, Tolkien, or Jackson?
In the early 90 (94ish) I had a huge argument with a girl who thought a tabe based system could be used to record tv, all of tv. Every channel, every show, everything. Yeah I know, but it put me off on a rant about using video capture cards and harddrives out the ass to get every show you WANTED to see from any channel.
This same chick also thought the solution to the economy was to print more money, so there ya go, but I think it shows that this can indeed seem obvious.
It may not seem obvious when you are thinking about lunch, but once you know about tv tuner cards and video capture, yep its totally fucking obvious. You just need the nudge to start thinking about how to record more than a VHS tape does. I had that nudge, anyone else?
I use my 2 VCRs for backing up shows that I liked and/or want to share with others. Recording with a DVR as the source is a real boon. Rather than hitting pause and waiting as the commercials are played, I can hit pause and use commercial skip a few times and then start the VCR again, total time, about 5-7 seconds, without a DVR you end up waiting the 3-6 minutes that commercials are being broadcast, works out to about 12 minutes per hour of time saved.
I sure will miss it if it goes.
Make no mistake, I will blame TiVo if it comes down to losing my Dish DVR.
Im a subscriber to Dish Network, I love it to death, but if the DVR functionality is cut off, then I will go back to local cable service.
Fuck tivo.
Poor cable service drove me to Dish, DVR ability made me loyal enough to keep the service after local cable got their act together, but without DVR I am back to VHS. No sense in keeping it while at the same time learning to program my vcr... AGAIN!
Lets hope Charlie pulls his head out before push comes to shove.
Now if you will excuse me I have a shitload of stuff (FSTV and TDC mostly) I have to backup to tape (30+hours) before time runs out. Boy, Im going to miss FSTV.
I has to do with the mindset of the player who they are trying to sell to. Look at oblivion, Huge fonts huge interface, kind of like it was made for playing on TV. The built in walkthrough type messages and the objective pointers are clues to whom the game was supposed to appeal.
We PCers expected a epic RPG with depth, what we got is a kickass middleages FPS geared for playing with joysticks. Not what I signed on for, but the modders seem to have a better idea of what the game should have been and are making great strides to fix it where possible. BS dropped the ball on us this time, they prefered the console gamers dollars to the PCers, fine. Lesson learned.
Spore should be fine though, seems like the kind of idea that should work well on anything with connectivity and a decent pointer.
"facts themselves are also biased depending on which ones are revealed and how often."
How does a fact become biased? If its not true then its not a fact, if it is then where is the bias?
I think what you are refering to are conclusions which are drawn from facts. Those are often biased by the people who offer them, but the facts are just the facts.
When I was a kid we climbed in groups of 3-7 seemed like a pretty social activity to us. But that was in America (in the 60s-70s). I wouldnt be surprised to have to pick up my daughter up from the police department for climbing. I hope I could get there fast enough that the cops wont have time to beat a confession out of her about things she hasnt done.
"All you can do by trying to filter it is make yourself look like a zealot and/or a fascist. Lots have tried, all have failed."
Most of the ones I remember have been quite successfull, almost frighteningly so. You have a distorted concept of how easy it is to look like a fascist or a zealot.
That was the biggest problem they had I think except for campaign money. And they might have got more donations if they would have avoided the ending of the IRS bit. I dont think any nation of any meaningfull size/population has to have SOME tax or method of getting funds for building infersructure. Pay as you go didnt sell me, but congress would have to end the IRS so I didnt worry. The folks with money to toss at a candidate might have just thought he was from mars.
I think thats why nations spend so much time promoting sports.
It's pretty safe, actually makes them money and at times of need the meme is easily mutated into nationalism or partisanism or whatever you need an us VS them mind set for.
Dont be surprised that this is what you get when people are educated to think sports are important. It also makes them good targets for military recrutment.
Seems like the version of Intelligent Design that Spore depicts is a fairly ungodly one. I would imagine there will probably be a few theists pissed off. If the intelligent designer was once a single cell creture too, then why worship it? After that, its all turtles all the way down....
I hope there will be an option for random mutation play. I want to start a game up and just check it periodically and see how it's doing, what it has become. Not taking control until the tribal level of the game.
I think he may have been reading from the christianity playbook, which also seems to target my kids, I have never had a gay person come to the door and ask me about their (the kid's)immortal soul. But when I moved into my new house a few years back they (those churchie fuckers) were crawling out of the woodwork, and they specifically asked me to send my daughter with them for a few hours once a week even though I am not an easy mark for those theistic con-men.
Ok sir but even if you won't go, just let us take her to sunday school, it's only a few hours.
"Apparently the mere existence of some type of policy -- regardless of what that policy actually is -- is now enough for companies to eschew any liability for leaking consumers' data."
It's as if a million Lawyers cried out and then were suddenly silenced.
That would be fine, but we are seeing a rapid rise in consumtion globaly already. Both of those together mean its going to get bad faster than you think.
"Does a 'stop-loss' force people who were never in the military to join or go to jail? If not then the difference to a "real" draft is quite obvious."
Seems like you could think of it as, Does stop loss result in people who dont want to be in the military (finished their term of service) , being forced into military service or face jail? At that point it seems pretty similar to me.
It all depends of how ya spin it huh? But is it really how we should handle the problem?
I guess in my idealistic hopes I wanted some producer/moneyguys to just tell Jackson to make it look right and dont deviate from the story as written. Thats it. Tomorrow????
