  2. Too hard? on DOJ Calls EU Microsoft Decision "Unfortunate" · · Score: 5, Interesting

I don't think fining a business with 40 billion in the bank 500 million is harsh. I think the DoJ wanted them to get a slap on the wrist like always.

  3. Nope, try again. on MSFTs "iPod Killer" Readied for Europe · · Score: 2

At $700 to $800, I do not think that this will be a Ipod killer. I am also willing to bet that this will not have crap for battery life, and not be near as portable.

  7. Reception Quality. on Turbo Codes Promise Better Wireless Transmission · · Score: 3, Interesting

I live in a rural area, where we are sometimes lucky that we have a signal, let alone a good one. This could improve the reception for us a lot. Either that, or it doubles the battery life of the cell phones. Either way, I am happy. Although I wonder if this coding could be used in wireless devices as well. Hopefully this could somehow be used to help limit the battery drain of WiFi on a laptop/PDA.

  8. This will never work. on Legislators Looking At Peer to Peer Monitor · · Score: 2, Interesting

There are too many different file sharing programs out there now for this to work. The government would have to make the P2P programs that do not add this software illegal. Even then, I do not think that this would work, even with the most Gestapo of tactics that the RIAA will try. This reminds me of China outlawing FreeNet. There is also IRC if any of this fail. We still have the Internet Privacy Act of 1996 in our favor. (The law that won't let RIAA, or government officials in a private channel if they have been told that they are not welcome.)

  9. Beta on Infinium Labs Threatens HardOCP Again · · Score: 4, Interesting

Did anybody else sign up for the beta test. I submitted for the test. They emailed me, told me they were having trouble and resubmit at their website. I had to write a fucking essay AGAIN. Worst, they never sent me the email that said that they have made the decisions for who got into beta, and didn't list the news on their site, like they said they were going to. These people have been full of shit from day one.

  14. Nazis on Kazaa Offices Raided · · Score: 5, Funny

I am guessing that throughout the world, the different recording associations got into a contest to see who could become the most Nazi in their tactics. Until now, RIAA had the lead. To counter this, the RIAA will probably round up all of the file traders into camps. This will allow them to win.

  17. Best Media Computer on Xbox for $99? Xbox 2 in 2005? · · Score: 1

For $230, to $250, you can get a really good media computer. It can play all kinds of great games that look as good as they would on a $1500 PC, as well as play downloaded video in just about every format. Plus it will have a decent hard drive for storing downloaded video, games or for use as a file server as well.

    XBOX $100
    120 gig hard drive $100
Modchip $30 to $50 (depends if it is solderless or not, also you do NOT need that DVD playback kit)

  21. Blue Ray is a better technology. on HD DVD Coverage at CES 2004 · · Score: 1

Just because Blu-Ray is going to require two different lenses, you all are throwing a hissy fit. Grow up. The FACT is HD-DVD will NOT hold enough, for a good movie, unless you want to keep swapping disks, which I don't. I like one DVD for wide screen and one for full screen, but not two for each of them. Look, a standard DVD holds two hours of video. These are 3 times that capacity. The problem is that isn't enough for the higher resolutions. 1280*1024 is 4.26 times as much as 640*480. Check the math, it will not work. The only thing it has going for it is a catchy name and that it will be cheaper to upgrade.

  22. Proper noun on JRR Tolkien: Return Of The Domain Name · · Score: 2, Insightful
The ruling makes sense to me. "J.R.R. Tolkien" isn't a trademark per se, but it is a (very particular) pronoun, so its use as a domain name should be reserved for the Tolkien Estate, not some random cyber-squatter. Infringing trademarks in registering domain names is an obvious no-no ... but I wonder, suppose there actually was someone named J.R.R. Tolkien, and he registered this domain? Would he still have a legitimate right to the domain, or would the domain be taken away from him, even though it was his name?!

It is a PROPER NOUN, not a pronoun. A proper noun is a specific person, place, or thing. A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun, like he, she, or it. Please, I know that we are all nerds, but can we work on our grammar.
