  1. Re:holy grail? hardly. on NYT On Flying Cars · · Score: 3, Insightful

I agree, cities right now simply aren't designed to accommodate millions of flying vehicles and nor is the general transport infrastructure. I think even if flying cars did become as affordable normal cars and could be maintained and driven as easily as normal cars it would still take an awfully long time to rebuild the infrastructure around them.

I really think that at the moment they are a solution in search of a problem. If the problem is that people would like to be able to travel more quickly and easily between locations then investment in mass public transport would provide a far better solution.

For example a system whereby you could get in the lift from your apartment to a high speed underground which could take you anywhere in the city or to intercity jump off points for more trains, planes or boats out of town and which was very quick, with hardly any waiting around between connections, comfortable and safe would be a much better idea than flying cars.

Obviously this is more expensive in the short term than letting people spend there money on cool flying cars but in the long term once the environmental, air, noise pollution etc was factored in I suspect proper investment and planning in infrastructure would pay off in spades.

As other people have said if it did break it will not be the major disaster you are portraying because:

    1) It's in the unpopulated Ocean
    2) The cable is not strong enough or big enough to hit the ground in one piece, either it will burn up or break up into small pieces.

That's not through any bias on the part of ./ or Groklaw.

First of all Groklaw mainly just reports on the court documents, you can read them and draw your conclusions just as PJ does and draws hers.

Secondly if you can find anything, anything at all which leads you to believe SCO may have a genuine case and might win it then please post here and we can discuss it, the fact that as yet no one on ./ has managed to do this is simply evidence that such a thing is so hard to find.

You'll notice that most reports in the media now are simply reporting what SCO said and no positive comments on SCO except for journalists like Maureen who write opinions based on a seriously flawed analysis of what ever it is that has happened they are reporting on.

It seems like you are not classing Maureen O Gara's comments as a sensibly balanced opposite point of view yet she and her ilk are the only people painting SCO's chances in a positive light which is in itself an interesting comment on the case.

  14. Who Cares ? on Report Claims SCO Intends to Charge IBM with Fraud · · Score: 1

Why should SCO care whether or not the public can see the 'evidence' in these sealed documents ?

You would have thought it was the legal case going through the courts they would be concerned about, and everyone involved there can see these documents anyway.

SCO has been saying for a while now

"Yes, what's happening in the courts right now might not look terribly positive. But you wait, if only you could see everything we can see you'd certainly be in no doubt about how right we are and how we deserve everything we are asking for."

This effort is probably just an attempt to make those claims sound a bit more convincing, the court may well not un-seal the documents ( and if they are that damaging to IBM I can't see how they'd agree to it ) in which case they can continue saying "Look, all this evidence IBM is trying to hide ! It proves we're right !". If the documents are released they will just issue more nonsense press releases and try to pretend this case is about something other than what they are claiming in court.

Most amusing would be if IBM helped get the documents unsealed and called there bluff.

WTF is a 'home invasion' ? Some great battleship pulls up outside and load of guys jump out to plant flags at the top of your stair ? Do criminals in America get to keep houses or whatever provided they have slaughtered all the occupants ?

In civilised countries we have burglaries where people break in to steal stuff but the chances of anyone in the house actually being harmed during a burglary is so low it's actually not worth mentioning.

When it does occasionally happen it makes the local news and I would say this happens about once every 8-9 months.

So yes, in civilized countries, Insurance works just fine. In most cases you can even get away claiming for stuff which was never stolen anyway and make a few bob into the bargain.

The fact you have a high percentage of gun toting crazies in the US shivering in their houses fondling their weaponry and you still have a comparable burglary rate to the UK is a pretty good indication that it's no real deterrent to burglars and the fact you have a much higher death rate from guns indicates that is because most burglars will ensure they are well armed to begin with. Either that or it really is the case that simply having more guns around is enough in it's self to cause more gun deaths, but I am sure you are a firm believer in the slogan "Gun's don't kill people, people do !".
