I stand corrected regarding the OS X UI. BSD can be made usable IF you make the command line completely unnecessary, but that isn't the only issue. Since Apple is the only company that builds Macs, they can ensure that all their hardware and software work flawlessly together. That will never be possible with Linux on x86.
Linux will never be "ready" for the desktop. Neither will Solaris, AIX, IRIX, *BSD, or HP-UX. *nix is for servers and hackers, not Joe Sixpack and his PC. To succeed on the desktop, you need a UI designed for the LEAST computer-literate people out there, it has to support ANY hardware they can throw at it, installing/removing software has to be easy, etc., etc., ad nauseum.
Besides, if Linux did gain wide acceptance as a desktop OS, we would all lose our elite status and have to go back to VMS.
With Microsoft's financial support, I'm sure they could fight Japan to a settlement. Of course, if some crazy judge awarded SCO huge money from IBM, they could just hire an army and bypass the courts completely.
Secretary tells help desk, "I just spilled coffee on my boss's keyboard. What should I do?" Help desk pilot fish decides, "What the heck, it's just a $35 keyboard. Have her disconnect it and wash it out in the sink. If that doesn't work, we'll replace it." Next call is from her enraged boss: "Who the hell told my secretary to put my new $4,000 laptop in the sink and run water all over it?"
I'm already not so sure I trust our current election system, and from what I've seen of computer security breaches, I would never trust a computerized system. Cheating aside, it would only take one malicious cracker, a bad hard drive or two, a broken communications line, a power failure, or any one of countless possible catastrophes to ruin the credibility of an election or make it impossible to vote. And there would be no hard copies to recount.
And even if Linux is not affected legally, this lawsuit could permanently scare a lot of companies and individuals away from using Linux, and OSS in general. Maybe it already has.
Could it be that Billg thinks Microsoft won't last much longer (or be profitable much longer) and wants to cash out while he can? Let's see if M$ launches any huge lawsuits sometime soon.
Here's what I always do whenever I'm in a campus lab:
1. Install Mozilla 2. Rename "Internet Explorer" icon to "World's Worst Web Browser" 3. Place Mozilla link next to it, named "World's Best Web Browser"
I'm not sure if anyone notices or cares, but if it wins even one convert, it's worth it.
Idiots, yes, but I think a lot of their sales come from the elderly. When people's minds start to weaken with age or illness, they become easy targets for these scumbags. My grandparents were constantly being tricked into buying useless stuff over the phone before they went to the nursing home. I don't mind telemarketers calling me so much, I like messing with them sometimes, but it really infuriates me to see them prey on old people.
I get so much spam, though, that if I did that, my ISP would probably think I'm the spammer. Nice idea, though. Maybe we could just put their addresses on several hundred pr0n mailing lists.
My freshman honors English class was held in a computer lab. We were supposed to use the computers for research and writing time in class. We actually did nothing but waste time with them. As much as I love computers (and hate write research papers), I really don't think they have a place in the classroom, and that we would have learned a lot more without the distraction.
We at SCO have determined that IBM has illegally inserted our valuable DNA into the public gene pool. This is not just a few molecules; whole strands have been copied. Anyone using DNA is guilty of copyright infringment. You will be receiving letters from our legal team soon.
And don't forget packet loss, as various parts inevitably start to fall off.
Funny, I thought it was in Lindon, Utah... oh no, it's coming my way!

Is it possible for SCO to sue a country?
With Microsoft's financial support, I'm sure they could fight Japan to a settlement. Of course, if some crazy judge awarded SCO huge money from IBM, they could just hire an army and bypass the courts completely.
Windows admins make a lot less than *nix admins
But you need fewer admins to maintain the same number of machines when they are running *nix.
Maybe "10" is in binary. I'm pretty sure the case ended more than two years ago.
I should try this in my CS classes. If my professors find any bugs in my code, I'll just sue them until they get the idea. Hello, straight A's!

SCO will be all over your ass now!
Isn't "SCO will be deep into your ass now" more appropriate?

In some parts of Cleveland, we call it "days ending in 'y'."
Spam and telemarketing works because of idiots.

The next step is to get Bush to declare the spammers terrorists. Then the fun will begin.
You can't be "unfamiliar with the command line" and a programmer. Pick one.
Well, I suppose you could write VB code, but calling that programming is quite a stretch.
Post your number on Slashdot and watch your phone line burn up within minutes!

I'm not sure what dialect you would call this, but the SCO website looks pretty funny translated to jive.
