Let me get this straight - your're dissatisfied with the speed at which you can download this thing, so what do you do? You LINK TO IT ON SLASHDOT? Do you understand CAUSE AND EFFECT???

    6. Does your son use Unreal?

Unreal is an online virtual reality used by hackers. It is a popular meeting place and training ground, where they discuss hacking and train in the use of various firearms. Many hackers develop anti-social tendencies due to the use of this virtual world, and it may cause erratic behaviour at home and at school. If your son is using Unreal, you should make hime understand that this is not acceptable to you. You should ensure all the firearms in your house are carefully locked away, and have trigger locks installed. You should also bring your concerns to the attention of his school.

Would it be possible for Microsoft to kill Open Source solely through a media campaign?

As we all know, they've killed quite a few competing products and companies throughout their history. Whether that can be attributed purely to media campaigns, I don't know, but it sure wasn't because of the quality of their products.

Money talks, and Microsoft has a lot of it.

It's been my experience that Solaris is not really any easier or harder to use than Linux, just different.

4000 hours? That's only 167 days! My computers run practically non-stop for years. Please tell me this is a mistake or that am I interpreting it wrong.

Did you read his responses? He does not advocate illegal activity. He advocates learning about computer security by hacking your own computers or getting together with friends and, with permission, hacking each others'. Had he had his own computer network to learn on as a child, he may not have felt the need to turn to illegal means to satisfy his curiosity.

  17. GNU/Linux will never be "user-friendly" on Rise of the 'Consumer' Linux Distribution · · Score: -1, Redundant
    Here's why:
    1. GNU/Linux was/is created by geeks for geeks like themselves.
    2. Geeks prefer things like CLIs, config files, and compiling stuff, none of which common users can understand well enough to use.
    3. Therefore, when geeks make their own operating system, they will always include things like these.
GNU/Linux, by its nature, is a geek-only OS. To make it as user-friendly as Windows would require a total redesign of the user interface from the ground up, which would require extensive changes to the OS code behind the UI (where's my C drive? how do I know what files are programs? where do I install programs to? how do I change my default browser/mp3 player/image viewer?). It will never happen. If we want an open source OS that can compete with Windows' ease of use, that must be the goal from the very beginning of development.

  22. How about Intellivision? on Dismal Console Failures · · Score: 1

I'm too young to remember those days, but I picked up an Intellivision in a yard sale once. It came with about 25 games, most of which were lousy duplicates of classic games like Space Invaders, Pacman, and Donkey Kong. There were a few decent sports games, but the controllers were so hard (and painful) to use that even the better games weren't any fun. I'm guessing the system never caught on, since I've never seen or heard of another one.
