  1. Good Music or Pop Music Hits? on New Computer Program Determines "Hitability" · · Score: 1
I think the sucess of HSS will depend on whether they try to predict hits in the pop music world (as most posts assume) or if they are using the term "hit" in a more general sense to mean music that people like.

In pop music it would fail, because pop songs become hits by a pretty standard formula which has little to do with the song:
    1. Good Looking Singer
    2. Catchy Lyrics
    3. Lots of advertising/publicity
For something like classical music however, HSS would have a good chance of finding hits because classical music follows almost mathematical rules. If the program could recognize a pattern that hit classical songs followed, other themes and melodies could be fit to the pattern, imagine the ability to have new Mozart or Bach symphonies.
  2. Jokes Aside... on New Computer Program Determines "Hitability" · · Score: 5, Interesting

Music and Math are closely related, as anyone who's read Godel Escher Bach knows. Musical scores have themes that appear in many different variations such as canons (when a melody is offset in time) and fugues (more complicated than a fugue, read the book if you want to know).

I'm not acoustically talented, and I'm sure I couldn't recognize a fugue or a canon if I heard one, but I know that there is some music that I really like, and that sounds better made and more complete than others. I wouldn't find it hard to believe those songs have properties that a computer could pick out.

For example, have you ever listened to a song for the first time, and been able to anticipate what the next notes would be? I think on some level our brain recognizes patterns that we can't see conciously. With statistical analysis, a program could determine if more hit songs always follow a pattern or a specific pattern (easy to hum songs that get stuck in your head), or if more hit songs would break the melody and hit a note you weren't expecting (like those really mind-blowing high notes).

As a music lover, I would be thrilled if this application worked. It would really enhance websites that try to suggest other songs that you might like based on your favorite songs. In a lot of the music I like, the singer's voice gets deep and gravelly in parts. There could be bands that I hadn't considered listening to who match that profile, and a program like HSS coudl find them.

  3. Overture's Motives on Overture Buys Fast Search · · Score: 2, Interesting

From the article, it seems like Overture wants to buy out search engines so that they can sell placement.

Now that we know where their results come from, won't we steer clear?

They could have at least pretended to return relevant results.

  4. Segway's Business Plan on Buy a Segway... Please · · Score: 1

Segway actually has a great business plan:

He hired scores of lobbyists, who spent much of last year trying to persuade state legislatures to rewrite their laws to permit his scooter to operate on city sidewalks.

His lobbying created a barrier to entry, meaning that anyone who wants to copy his idea will have to go through the same procedure, which will take about a year. Timing is everything. Even if the current version of the Segway flops, they have first dibs on the next model.

  5. Re:Just do this on Microsoft Going After Hotmail Spammers · · Score: 1

Actually if you've read the article, the spammers didn't get the email addresses from the directory, they got it by randomly choosing dictionary words to guess people's emails.

In this case, the program guessed millions of random e-mail addresses to see which ones were active, Microsoft alleged.

It's just another reason to never reply to spam.

  9. How will it interact with the other animals on Cloneable Mammoth Cells Discovered in Russia · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'll admit I don't know much about Siberia, but I would imagine that there are at least a few other animals up there (The Siberian tiger springs to mind). I wonder how the mammoths will interact with them. Who remembers the Simpsons episode where Bart brought a frog to Australia?

  10. Getting a rolling boil on Priest Brews in Washing Machine · · Score: 1

The machine is connected to the water direction, that flow tubes hung out of security reason into the Spülbecken. The computer is connected and the program started. If the temperature is reached to the Einmaischen, the computer gives a signal and holds the machine on.

I think he's using the computer to bypass the washing machine's temperature gauge so that the washing machine will continue heating the water until the computer tell it to stop at 100 degrees.

Don't forget that in Germany they use Celsius (crazy metric system). So you'll want to heat your water to 212.

  12. Amazing Idea on Instant Concert CDs? · · Score: 1

Wow, this sounds like a really wonderful idea.

Think about it, a concert is one of the times when people are really in a money spending mood (think about how many $20 band t-shirts you have, not to mention $5 bottles of water).

People would love to be able to play the cd for their friends and go "I was there!" After a good concert I almost always go out and buy the band's new CD if I enjoyed the concert, if for no other reason than remembering the good times. I do admit that I might decide to buy the cd of the concert instead of a t-shirt, depending on how much the little angel on my shoulder yells at me for spending money (My angel is kinda bossy).

How will the RIAA react to this, seeing as this is legitimizing one of the oldest forms of music pirating?

I can't imagine the RIAA won't get it's fingers into this pie. So as long as they're getting a percentage of the revenue they should be very happy. NOt to mention, who's going to stand there with a low quality tape recorder when they can get an official CD? I believe this would decrease the number of bootleg CDs. It would also get rid of some of the justifications for sharing mp3s ("Well I can't buy a CD of the concert in stores, so why shouldn't I download it?")

This is the most innovative idea I've heard regarding CDs in a long time.
