I'm not expert on this, but from my limited experience, I would say that his point about the higher intelligence of American workers (at least in the engineering or technology fields) seems to be true, when considering the average person that is actually employed.
Indians in general seem to be better educated, but maybe this is part of the problem. Less intelligent people are graduating with the same degrees as their American counterpart, and the more intelligent Indians go for PhDs and/or come to the United States. (This in turn boosts the average intelligence of the American worker.) The Indians you will meet here are very smart and very well educated, but I don't think the intelligence part extends to all outsourced workers in India.
So why didn't they try the old twenties or other bills with metallic strips to see if they also burned? That would be the only logical thing if you were trying to prove that the new twenties have mysterious invisible RFID tags.
Since there is obviously not a single well known place for selling electronic test equipment, does anyone know where the most popular place for buying and selling would be? (Not necessarily for finding the cheapest ones.) I have several older power supplies, dmms, etc., but I haven't sold them because I do not think I would be able to get much on Ebay or anywhere else I know of where people would actually look for them.
I think this little device has great potential. Specifically, it has a hard drive and runs Windows XP. I bought an HP 680 Handheld PC, which I thought was great, but ran Windows CE. Finding software for it when a new version of Windows CE/Pocket PC came out that was incompatible with the previous version.
Now I just hope they have the budget to do some advertising. No one wants to waste time on a product that will be discontinued in a few months, as was the case with my HPC.
But you CAN work to establish and support governments that are NOT based upon religious teachings and that DO have rights for women.
First off, how do WE go about working to establish these governments in countries who are perfectly happy having these governments? I don't think they are going to let us change their governments other than by force.
Second, we SHOULDN'T try to do so. It is possible to have laws based on religous teachings that don't force religions on people. This is what our country used to be. These are simply morals that certain people believe in. A country should be based on morals that the people in it beleive in. Values that are not based on religion are not necessarily "safer" than ones that are. You don't have to go back far in history to see many exmples of this. If we don't understand this, we will never be able to work with the Muslim world, because they understand when they are being looked down on because of their beliefs and values.
Blame America says we're uniquely evil simply because we're uniquely powerful.
I love seeing people on Slashdot argue about things that don't even exist except in their mind... as if "Blame America" were actually a known concept. Maybe there is a book by this name that I haven't heard of. Seriously, this is how one guy sees an argument. You argue with it like it actually exists in more than the minds of people of have a loosly connected worldview, then you go on to say pretty much imply exactly what the parent post said.
I would hardly agree that the parent post was bashing anyone, it was simply stating the obvious in a fair and at least someone respectful way. You, however, seem to have "bashing" down to an artform.
I could care less about your position on the Patriot Act. That was not the point. (In fact, I do believe that one part of it should be removed, but I also doubt that you have read it.) You are such an idealogue incapable of understanding others' points of view that as soon as you see the word "Patriot Act" or "conservative", you go nuts, bashing anyone in your way. Of course you have the right to post off-topic posts, and I am perfectly capable of ignoring off-topic threads, but one has to read part of a comment to realize that it is off-topic or uninteresting. Combining that with Slashdot's extremely biased moderators who would rather use their mod points on off-topic posts bashing conservative ideas than on those posts which offer insightful comments on the original topic, makes finding interesting or informative comments very difficult.
By the way, long and ungraceful sentences are not necessarily run-on sentences. However, if you don't like long sentences you are probably quite frustrated if you have made it this far.
Dude, you've got problems, and so do the moderators who modded this insightful. From your grammer, I would guess you are about 11, but you sound like you have been listening to some sort of propaganda for at least 15 years. Not everything has to be turned into a political argument. I get so freaking tired of trying to read comments on an article and most of the comments modded high enough for me to see have nothing to do with the original topic, but are spawns of nutjobs who hate people who don't think like them.
Do yourself a favor and actually learn what the Patriot Act does, preferably from a real lawyer, not from where you get your usual propaganda. If you are still so against it, wait until an article about the patriot act comes up, and give a real comment of your own instead of making fun of others' comments
By the way, values don't think, people do.... well at least some people.
But if you eliminate welfare altogether, you'll start to see more beggars on the street dying from hunger and lack of medical attention. We can live just like they do in Brazil, which has private charities and gangs of five year old abandoned children running around the slums scavenging food.
I very much doubt this. I guarantee you that if you could donate money voluntarily to various charities on your tax returns, and if all the rich liberals (example: Hollywood) put their money where their mouth is, we would not have such problems. At least, not any more than they already exist. If we were to do everything possible to support charities and encourage charitable contributions, and it still didn't work, then you could say that welfare is necessary. But that hasn't been tried since before there were strict laws and regulations to keep the corrupt from being the only ones to become wealthy or have power. With all of the laws we have today, I seriously think we could get rid of welfare.
Well, almost. I think we still need it for the mentally ill, but I think it only needs to be given if there is no local charity to serve properly. (This is a very complicated situation because no matter how generous a town is, some may not be able to provide proper care for certain people, and cooperation among charities is not guaranteed.
This whole debate boils down to this: If the government can take as much of your money as they want (OVER HALF OF THEIR EARNINGS FOR SOME PEOPLE), then people don't have the right to their own property. So why the hell do liberals believe the right to kill the unborn? What's next, the government claiming the right to your child before you are born? Life has been reduced to property which you can do with as you please, but you can't do what you want with your money, which has no life, feeling, or soul?
I can kill my unborn child because it is "MY" property (even though it is really only half mine and if I want to destroy it I was being stupid when I created it) but money, which I worked hard to earn (which should be rewarded) will get taken from me and given to someone who doesn't work but it mentally capable of it.
A country is only as good as its people. We need to have a country in which morals are valued, and it is EXPECTED that you would give money to charity if you can.
If you don't have enough faith in our people to take care of those who need it voluntarily, then our country is doomed anyway.
Buy them and return them because they don't work properly. (Find out ahead of time if you can do this at your store.) Then the record company actually loses money instead of pontential money. Stores like Best Buy wouldn't want their mp3 player sales to slip in exchange for a decline in their CD sales AND extra returns hassles. Record companies would catch some major flack.
If my sister-in-law does something wrong, whether it is order child porn, produce child porn, torture someone, or murder someone, it will change my opinion of her. Just because I know her and the behavior is unexpected doesn't make it okay.
Any time you participate in something, you are supporting it. This is particularly true when it something that is not really needed. I will not buy CDs from bands under the RIAA. I will not buy shoes or clothes from companies who have been shown to employ workers in sweatshop conditions when they could afford to pay them orders of magnitude more.
When you take part in something, espicially when you give someone money, you know damn well what you are supporting. This crap that you are innocent because you aren't the one actually doing it is a joke. Do you think a judge wouldn't sentence me because I paid to have someone killed instead of doing it myself?
Another thing, these kids aren't just posing. Many of them are being held hostage and raped. Where do you think many of the missing children end up? These children will be scarred for life, and many of them won't be able to live a normal life. That is, if they are allowed to live through their ordeal. I'm sure many of them would rather die than go through being raped another day.
If everyone in this country started looking at child porn, you can bet the number of abducted or exploited children would skyrocket!
Ummm, no. In this case, it is pretty easy to see which sites are hosting child pornography. And if one site accidently gets blocked, it is not the end of the world for them. How hard is it to have some communication with your ISP? The potential inconveince for a few people is nothing compared to the horror exploited children go through because the "middlemen" in the supply chain are not being held responsible. Go ACLU!! Way to uphold those children's most basic rights over some businesses' convenience.
Signatures and votes can be bought, such as when Democrats gave cigarettes to potential voters in Chicago the last presidential election. However, it would be pointless for the Republicans to use such tactics, because nobody wants Governer Davis anymore except for the liberal extremists who can't admit they were wrong.
We already know what percent of the state wants the recall, which has been verified by polls many times. It doesn't matter how many actually signed the petition, so your statistics about the petition are pointless.
I wouldn't be surprised. It happens all the time in our school newspaper. Liberals write in pretending to be racist conservative bigots, then every opinions letter over the next two week is in response to how that person, along with all conservatives, is a moron.
Some of these were simply too incredible to believe. One time I looked the person up and he didn't even exist in the school directory, which is updated regularly! Our school paper apparently doesn't do a good job checking these people. However, this is the same school paper that posted an article about the dangers dihydrogen monoxide, and how bad Bush environmental policy is responsible for the widespread use of this "chemical".
BTW, according to my extensive studies, at the college level conservative girls are definitely hotter than liberals ones, but I have a feeling this may not be the case for older women.
Redhat and SuSE should use some of SCO's tactics. Since SCO's version of Linux probably contains some code that was generated by these companies or their employees, they can "sell" licenses to use their code before they sue SCO for violating the GPL. That way, the end user won't be held "liable".:) No more SCO linux users.
It doesn't have to be a valid threat to scare management into submission. I think more tech companies need to put insurance agents into upper management positions. Nothing intimidates those guys!
Hitler was about as far from an American conservative as you can get. I don't know anyone who would support Hitler, either conservative or liberal. (The only possible thing he had in common was a relatively higher level of nationalism.) And I sure as hell don't know anyone who wants to cover up what Hitler did, like liberals (Walter Duranty anyone?) do with the evil communist states in history. This just sickens me. Why bring up Hitler (not that we shouldn't) when Tibet is STILL being oppressed (torture anyone?), just like Taiwain. I used to live with four Taiwanese students, and they all wished our country would support them more, being a free, independent nation, instead of being China's bitch. Their parents continually worry every time China fires missles their way pretending they are just testing them. Why did I not even hear about Stalin's massacres until I was 21, when I had Hitler's life history drilled into me since I was in grade school? And I would venture say that over half of my friends in college have no idea about the whole Tibet ordeal.
Capitalism, i.e., "rob[bing] our citizen's of jobs in a effort to enrich few."
Great! I've been looking all over for one of those Communist's Dictionary. Maybe you could tell me where you found yours.
I can picture it now...
Fidel Castro n. Perhaps the greatest leader of modern times, this dictator turned a squalid island in the Caribbean Sea to a tropical paradise and the envy of freedom loving people and opportunists everywhere.
There may have been some US and British companies doing business with him during this time period, but our governments were busy going to war with him. We may or may not have know about his cruelty 10 years earlier when we were in with him, you YOU CAN BET that the countries who were still in with him a year ago knew about it.
Its odd that you chose the word forget. It seems that someone "forgot" to write a book about all the others thousands who made deals with Saddam. Dealing with corrupt governments is so common that either it should be accepted as fine to do business with people and governments who are not behaving well (which I don't think we should) or we should call out EVERYONE who is doing it WHEN IT HAPPENS, not wait 60 years later and pick out an American company and point the finger at.
And don't even talk about trying to sue IBM for what happened back then. That would be like trying to sue Adolf Hitler's great grantchildren for his sins.
I had SuSE installed for about 6 months before I bought the retail package. SuSE has a very nice online package update system, but it still takes a while even with a high speed connection. I finally decided to pay for the retail distribution so I could get documentation and updating packages would be much quicker. (Thought some of the packages in the box might have a newer version online) I would never have paid for a distribution that did not have these two things, especially when you can get the ISOs for free. They are really hurting themselves here. I think very few home users are going to pay simply for support if they are already willing to experiment with a new OS that isn't exactly as simple as windows to deal with.
This sounds similar to the French, German, Russian, and Chinese governements and comanies making deals with Saddam Hussein while he massacred 100,000 of his own people. No one talked about that recently when it was STILL GOING ON!!!
This makes me wonder... Wouldn't it be possible to make some sort of data transfer network or "sub-internet" where people communicate using digital channels over internet telephony? It would be pretty hard to trace what people are doing, sharing, etc, because data packets would be coverted to a digital representation of audio being sent out. The digital "soundwaves" could be modulated to any any frequency, so they would in no way look like the digital bits they actually represent. This would probably be fairly slow, but possible. Any thoughts?
As the jobs of educated, middle class people go, the unemployment rate will skyrocket. What you describe as an imbalance has nothing to do with these people, or people with low-paying jobs. It has everything to do with the WEALTHY. The 1% who own 99% of the wealth. These peoples' jobs are not getting shipped overseas, and even if they were, you can make plenty of money if you ALREADY HAVE plenty of money. So we will still maintain 99% of our wealth, but it will just be less evenly distributed. As long as the wealthy are in this country (and why would they leave?), it keeps the cost of living high for the rest of us. This combined with the fact that the rich executives and stockholders are making money from the exporting of jobs, while the average Joe is losing his job. We simply cannot compete with the lower salaries the rest of the world are willing to accept because they do not have to compete with as many wealthy citizens for a place to live, etc.
Although I don't know if there are any feasible ways of isolation that don't hurt certain countries, I do think that it is better for every country to have a plentiful suppply of jobs than for every person to have a dirt cheap VCR. What good does a cheap VCR do my if I don't have a job? Maybe this exporting of jobs is good for third world countries now, but in the long run, it makes more sense to have local economies that can supply products for themselves, and by themselvs.
I don't understand it. It's not like record labels offer some sort of super-privileged service. They make CDs, advertise, and in many cases pay for the recording studio and equipment. Why do they think they get to "own" the artists?? Seriously, once a band gets a little money, they can do all of these things for themselves. Many bands, such has Big Head Todd and the Monsters have been very successful without a major label. The labels really do not offer an exclusive service, just basically an absurdly poor loan to desperate bands.
Any band that is being offered a contract from a record label should know that they are good enough to make it in the business, and thus they should know that THEY have the power. Most studio recordings are over done. Some of the most popular songs on radio were done with in very low-budget studio. (Such as most of John Mellencamp's early songs, Phish's first album, etc.)
The only real thing in the way of most artists is getting radio to play their songs. If we could stop payola and give people more power the voice what they like and don't like, instead of letting the record companies tell the radio stations for us, then they would lose whatever real power they think they have.

I can see it now: "I don't just support human rights, I helped invent them!!"
