Well put. What gets me is that we have this other, sizeable, software company we do business with. They bend-over backwards to help us, talk via phone, face-to-face, name it. If their support center remotely drops the ball there's talk of replacing them. When they find out they do all they can to make up for it. Microsoft's support, by comparison, is a farse. First, who ever considers going to it first or second or even third when there's a problem? The few times we have consulted Microsoft over Active Directory issues, we find their help useless. Real solutions for AD -- and we replicate across the country to hundreds of sites -- have all been found via google groups, word of mouth with other companies or by very talented people who work here. Any talk about contacting MS for AD help draws chuckles.
I'm not sure why I wasted time here today posting this stuff. I guess I needed to release some frustration as I try to resolve yet more malware problems....
Having over a decade of IT career behind me, one of the most amazing things I have come to experience in the IT/corporate world is Microsoft infallibility. It is equivalent to dealing with right-wing Christians and their belief of the infallibility of scripture -- no matter how much you point out the flaws.
Or, rather, it is more of a, "Microsoft will get it right in the end." No matter how many times a network goes down due to a minor piece of malware, no matter how many support calls are generated by spyware/adware -- so bad that it has reached the point that techs would rather re-image than try to repair, no matter how many crashes and instability issues, people blindly defend, support and believe in Microsoft. And I'm talking about veteran, senior, experiences IT folks.
Even though they know to keep the big money on a mainframe Unix box, even though they know that it makes more sense to run a hardened Cisco device instead of a Windows-based network node, they are devoted to the Windows workstation and the Windows mid-server solution.
And, if you dare promote open source -- firefox, linux, apache, sendmail -- solutions you are darn near ostracized. It has reached the point now that I follow, in-line, rather than risk the flames.
I'm not sure what to call it exactly, but people tolerate Microsoft like no other company. If any other vendor's products barely hiccups, there is talk, quickly, of replacing it -- and they do, but Windows is as fixed within the corporate world as Everest. Thoughts of removing it being akin to getting rid of desk chairs. It simply will not happen.
It has reached, IMO, a place where every big, corporate business wants to be -- embedded to the point of religion....
Nixon would be a better example of this. Then again, all presidents seem to have some flaw, paranoia and/or general tragic quality about them. It usually only takes a bit of kicking of the veneer to get to the rot underneath.
The great unwashed could care less about the GPL -- any version -- and do not even know it exists. People just want things to work. Closed-source works, open-source works, it all works, but, mostly, it's closed-source. It's what people use everyday to do this and that and (to quote RUP) they don't even think about it!!!
We run a 5000 node shop, spread across the country. After paying for the MS tax we can write anything we need in-house and/or pay contractors to do it well within budget. If you start talking open source, gpl, freedom, blah, blah. MGT will, at best, look at you blinking and at work take you out of business-decision meetings.
Paying a bit of corporate cash for closed-source is acceptible. I'm not arguing for closed-source mind you. I am pointing out the fact that this stuff only exists in the nether regions of geekdom. Stallman is unknown and no one simply really cares.
If linux/the gpl/open source/free software is to ever take off it will not be the way it's been handled and done up until now....
Really, I'm being honest here. Plz think hard before modding me down, and then mod me down if you will....
Not to mention the fact that not one of the defendants of the Nuremburg trials used any sort of defense which claimed that there neither was a holocaust, nor that the numbers were minimal. Those men seemed to understand, quite well, and agree with the prosecutors, that a horrific holocaust had indeed taken place. Their defense was, mainly, that they were simply following orders when proven to have participated....
Any sort of holocaust denials are post-war or, rather, post Nuremburg to say the least....
This all reminds me of a joke about the former USSR (the whole, crucifying folks and families cuz their children downloaded tunes):
A guy is tossed into a siberian prison cell with another old guy who has been there for decades. Old guy asks new guy, "what are you in for?" New guy says, "I got 20 years for doing absolutely nothing." Old guy says, "that's nut. You only get 10 years for absolutely nothing...."
Being "technically" dead does not absolve one from their crimes while technically alive. Life or death have no meaning under the law and should not come into these proceedings. I think there is a failure to appreciate the grave nature of the crime committed when such an unattached occurance as terminal status comes into this court, your honor....
He got a bad rap. He did a lot to hurt himself. He's a joke and a genius. He's a lot like David Lee Roth -- hellofa front man, tops in his day, now rather pathetic as many are apt to do. Elvis did it and, recently, Royce Gracie did it going up against a young and vibrat Matt Hughes. These guys were trend-setters, legend makers, the first of a kind who stuck around and allowed their creativity to languid and be replaced with ego. Stallman is another example.
Kudos to all, but still, stfu already. If it were me, I think, maybe, I'd just tell people to leave me tf alone. Better to be a Bob Dylan (who started saying "leave me tf alone") than to be a John Romero.
From memory: he taught Carmack to code (THE Carmack), he co-founded THE company and was foundational in creating THE games that changed the gaming industry forever. IMO, he also foresaw MMOGs. Read his pre-release Quake talks. He was describing friggin 3D MMOGs -- back in the early/mid 90s. Partly due to this he was kicked-out of Id. Partly also because he apparently did more talking than working.
I also remember reading his descriptions of FPSes after leaving ID and I remember thinking -- this a guy who is a player. He believed in balls-to-the-walls FPSes, and that's what original Doom/Quake was. FPSes, after he left Id, and after Daikasucka, became slow, patience, boring-as-shit events by comparison. Sure, Counter-strike is/was awesome, but the blood-pumping feel of original FPSes, under Romero's Id, were an ancient, pure-breed of PC gaming long since dead and gone IMO.
Romero should be more observed for his contributions in their time and less listened to now, or ever near his end-life with Id. Again, he's done the best job at bringing his ownself down.
If not for the man, most of you would not be playing the games you're addicted to today....
"They say, 'guns don't kill people. People kill people,' but the gun certainly helps.... It wouldn't do much good to point your finger and yell, 'bang!...' I doubt that would kill anyone...."

Homer: Oh, that sounds too complicated.
Homer's brain: Okay, don't use reverse psychology.
Homer: Okay, I will!
Homer: Okay, brain. You don't like me, and I don't like you, but let's get through this thing and then I can continue killing you with beer.
Homer's Brain: It's a deal!

Yes, but to quote Eddie Izzard,
"They say, 'guns don't kill people. People kill people,' but the gun certainly helps.... It wouldn't do much good to point your finger and yell, 'bang!...' I doubt that would kill anyone...."
From the tv show, "All In The Family":
Daughter: "Daddy, don't you know that guns kill 1000s of people every year?!?"
Archie Bunker: "Well, little girl, would you feel any better if they was pushed out of windows?..."
