Because of glibc differences, saying there should be "one binary Oracle for all Linux" is like saying there should be one binary for all of Unix.
honestly say, this is a problem of linux and glibc and not of Oracle. One of the imprortant features in Solaris is compatibility - one could run a binary from 2.4 on 9. Try that with Linux. This is another issue, that stops Linux from being accepted in the enterprise world.
I think, it will be at least IOS-compatible from the point of view of CLI. The amount of people experienced with IOS CLI is quite big and I don't think, Cisco will/can affort selling incompatible OS.
New OS internals seem to be pretty different. At least they finally managed to have memory protection (in "normal" IOS all processes/threads share the same memory). This should make some sence for http server for example, where performance is not a problem.

...regarding OpenSSH and VNC in particular, support for both of them is available.
OpenSSH is included in Solaris 9 as a standart package, so you will get the same level of support as, say, for SunONE Web server; btw, this is also true for many other software packages (Apache, if you need it); VNC was part of SUN PCi suite AFAIR, but somewhat patched.
If you need support why just not to buy it? There are plenty of companies worldwide, which sell it.
Either release the source code for Solaris or help the Linux kernel developers out w/ Sun's own coders and focus more on selling Linux and Unix services like IBM.
Are you crazy? What for? Will this help to make money? I doubt... Solaris is great on the kernel side, and, yes - userland is somewhat odd - the reason for this, i think, is compatibility with the previous releases. So they cannot drop SVR4 awk and replase it with the GNU awk or the one from BSD, for the sake of bugs compatibility.
I hope, someday Sun will clean their userland, thowing away old/usr/ucb, everything from/usr/bin, what does have analogs in/usr/xpg4 and leaving ONE shell (my favorite is zsh - it is ksh and POSIX-compatible , but bash is also okay) - may be two - with staticaly linked/sbin/sh.

...is to use apt-get with rpm and perform X.509 certificates-based authentication. Each certificate holder could then buy software subscription for major releases and patches.
of course, apt-move etc should also be implemented.
with apt-get update && apt-get upgrade in cron this will allow to make your systems resonably secure.
Existing situation with jar archives and signed patches is far from being ideal. I don't want to have Java only for being able to patch my server

while it is promising, it is linux-only. MAS, OTOH, tries to provide compatible way for any system...
from their site:
MAS will provide a complete mechanism for media support, for all pluri-modal media, for all platforms, for all operating systems, for all window systems.
MAS supports the desktop and, transparently, the network.
In particular, MAS will provide complete support for the X Window System, across the network.
MAS is an open system: the complete core will remain under the original MIT ("X") license, equally supporting open and proprietary use and development.
MAS provides mechanisms for structured extension, and will be supported by dedicated testing and certification processes.
moreover, X license allows companies like Sun or HP to incorporate MAS into their systems. they are not always happy with GPL.
Most of the people even don't know what does it mean "64-bit". They do know, how to do Start -> Programs -> MS Word. Most of the people don't know what RAM means... "Radical Awesome Muslims?":)
Most of the companies do their money on servers market. Noone seems to take care about desktops. Profit is too low.
I still hope, Sun can speed up their development and Solaris will not die...

So, where will Cisco go with this? Keep a specialized IOS version for carriers only?
I hope no. They just finished moving away from CatOS CLI for switches, so dropping IOS CLI and going for something completly new looks ... strange...
But you never know

is it powered by windows, windows ce or anything else? Does linux run on it? What about NetBSD? ;)

It is however might be too expensive for normal home user (but Scott McNealy says he uses it at home :) ). For office they are great!
... no one cares 'bout SCO and their stupid lawsuits.
