    I'm especially looking forward to this. I need design tools. But Windows upsets me. I'd get a Mac, but they're more costly and I work in MSlandia anyway.

    Now, with the (seemingly) confirmation that this *will* run on x86. I'm happy. I sincerely hope that I can seamlessly move over to this. It's gonna be stable, efficent and nice. The "nice" part, becuase it will run on x86 (albiet hi-specced systems).

    Still, doing Video on a 512mb G4 IS a nice experience :P

    Unless you mean Microsoft Sharks - I mean, there were never any other kind? Sharks were always made by Microsoft? I thought everything was made by Microsoft?     In the UK, various companies and Universities run schemes to give financial incentives to female students to enroll on technical and scientific courses. A while back, the government used to even offer lump sums (1000UK per year) to female students who got good college grades, and went on to study something "Techie" at Uni.

    Like I posted elsewhere, it still wasn't enough - On my friends CS course, they had ONE female student.

    They aren't in trouble. No matter what happens, they still have the bucks to make any "Mini Bills" into sizeable corporations in their own rights.

    This dominance of a show was just one example of what we can expect. However, in the future we could have 2,3 or 4 "Microsofts" there.

    Bill is still the worlds richest man. Bill will continue to be the worlds richest man - possibly it will make him richer.

    Various countries are fine about this.

    I suggest St Helena/Ascension to reg' the ship. They're "kinda" British, but not quite, so the flag is a flag of convienience. Also, if you station yourself there, Ascension has this really fat pipe...

    Failing that, simply get a load of flags, and decide which one to use, depending on where you are and who is bothering you.

    Of course, make a copy to tape, to play in the car. Make MP3 to play on your computer(s). As long as YOU are the person using.

    Now, this ruling (or whatever) is a little silly in this respect. But the whole point is that they don't want you to make a copy to your computer if you intend to give it to somebody else.

    When you buy a CD, you buy ONE copy of the contents, you can lend it (for free) to other people, you can even sell it, when you're bored with it. You CANNOT profit in anyway from it. Giving away copies to whoever counts as profit, as they now have a copy of the song.

    This is what the idea, if not the wording of this all means.

    No, you're right. Your comment won't be moderated into oblivion - it should be promoted to Godhood (why are you AC if you are inteligent enough to write like this?).

    Scenario: Somebody registers YOUR name, they make money out of things YOU have done. They trade on YOUR brand, on YOUR image (well, maybe not image - Geek!).

    You'd like that? I mean, recently there was a case of http://www.manchesterunited.co.uk/ - it was registered by a fan of a rival team (Arsenal), for two reasons:

    1. To make money (by trading football stuff)
    2. To hurt ManUtd (he plans to put propoganda there)
    3. To eventually sell to Man Utd.

    Why shouldn't Man Utd be able to say "No, the name belongs to us"? They're the biggest club in the world, so they class as a Big Corporation. With typical /. logic applied, they become Bad People. When in actual fact, they are just protecting their name.

    They took the guy to court btw.

    Now, it's not a great example, but I just read about it, so it's the best I have. But seriously, think about it.

    How would you like me to register www.slashdot.com and use it to vent my frustrations against everything /. stands for?

    Let's stop being so typically /. kneejerk reactionary, start being the adult professionals we're supposed to be.

    I suffer daily from this Bandwidth Hog problem. About 10 people in our office use Napster. They all do it via our feeble 64k line, mainly becuase the 400k DirectPC thingie sucks.

    They discovered Napster en Masse, about three weeks ago. (They're Mexicans!)

    I typically view /. at 500-800 BYTES per second. It's ridiculous. Part of the problem is that it uses HTTP (afaik), so throttling or even blocking it doesn't work.

    Besides, our Sys Admin is this quiet guy who knows what kind of grief he'll get if he attempts to impose sanctions.

    The plus side? The management don't understand why the line is suddenly so amazingly slow. We're upgrading to 512k in a month :P

    But yeah, I'm all for the Uni's doing this - sorry!

    We DO need a standard. A basic look and feel which is default upon installation of any of the Window Managers. What does it need to look like? It needs to look a bit like Windows. I know, it hurts to hear this, but if we want to see Linux/BSD on the Desktop, we need to provide a comfortable migration for the legions of Windows users.

    KDE and Gnome should have "Windows" as the default scheme. I know the very idea is not especially likeable, but...

    This is not to say that we can't completely customise our desktops - of course we should be able to! But we need a "standard" interface which is entirely accesible by the average Windows user.

    I use both, Windows is a lot more intuituve. Still.

    Oh, and the "graphical file manager" thing - I guess he's talking about MC?

    "This happens to me rather often. Sometimes, the problem isn't solved at all,and I actually have to shut down NS. But even then, the damned program keeps floating around in the background, invisible, and I have to manually shut it down with ctrl-alt-del.

    Another thing that annoys me is that it closed itself with the message "This program has cused an illegal operation...[bla bla]". The program closes, but the message box just seems unable to bugger off! I then just move it down to the bottom of the screen, so that the start bar overlaps it when I make it inactive, and start NS again. It then works perfectly, but has a larger chance
    of shutting down with the same message, refusing to go away, again.

    I was hoping that NS would fulfill all of my needs as a browser, but now it's clear to me that MicroSoft actually has produced a superior product. It's sad but true, but in any case, I'll wait for the next version of NS too see if the
    problems are fixed before I convert to the dark side.

    Slightly offtopic...

    On the FIX BBS I recently posted this:

    "The problem has oocured in versions 4.6 and 4.7 on Win95, Win98 and NT.
    Sometimes, Netscape doesn't allow you to follow links. Like, the pointer will change to the "hand" when you move over the link, but a click doesn't do anything.

    The only way to solve the problem is to reboot windows. It's very strange. It's happened to me regularly for about 6 months, I can't be the only one?

    I'm considering reporting it to Netscape.

    Earlier today, I wrote how, if Photoshop and Macromedia ported their programs (even older ones) to Linux, then I'd finally have the excuse I was looking for...

    Well! This is it! Photoshop, Dreameaver, Flash, Illustrator... all on BSD! I guess you can even run MS Office (which many of us do, if we admit it!).

    Ladies and Gentlemen. I firmly belive that this is going to be something close to the Holy Grail... the perfect OS. I'd heard rumors, now they appear to be confirmed.

    Come August, with bugs fixed, and wishlist instated... That was when I was planning on buying a new desktop... Well, guess what I (hope) I'll be getting?

    Oh, the MySQL worked fine for me... I did wonder why it was done this way, it was only a handfull of pics... But they looked great!

    The correct position is as follows.

    Head: Top of head, level with top of screen. The screen should be an armslength away.

    Arms: Bent at elbows. Forearms run STRAIGHT, with wrists LEVEL with keyboard, and keyboard SLIGHTLY angled upward, from the front.

    Legs: Like arms, STRAIGHT. You chair should enable you to have your feet flat on the ground, with the heels just ahead of the edge of your seat.

    Chair: SLIGHTLY reclined, with plenty of lumbar support.

    Oh, the monitor should be in front of you, not to the side.

    NOW! How many of us actually sit like this? My (Mexican) employers don't seem to give a damn. That said, when I worked for the UK Government, it was even worse...

    Maybe one of those head sticks, that really disabled people use?

    Or maybe that totally-possible-and-in-production system that Denzel Washington has in "The Bone Collector". You know? The single button/trackpad combo, with complex voice commands...?

    Yeah, that'd be it.

    Oh, on the ergo keyboard I had, the "home" and "end" keys were switched, never figured out why...

    They are better though.

    Yet another "big" product, coming over to Linux. I like this.

    With the upcoming K "Office" and KDE2. Maybe, just maybe, I'll finally make Linux my main way of working, and only use Windows when I need Photoshop and Dreamweaver etc (No, GIMP is NOT anywhere like as good as Photoshop5.5).

    I'm about to reinstall NT, becuase Real Player doesn't seem to work with SP6, and Illustrator is playing me up.

    Hmm, I've gotten off topic here. But yeah, this is yet another boost. You think Adobe and Macromedia will follow suit? :P

    Indeed. In fact, this is probably a Good Thing(TM). Seriously, MS can't expect to have a great deal of input into the project. However, what if Good Things(TM) were to somehow to drift from MS over to the project? DirectX being a good example. No, really, there's no need to worry. Really. I wonder though, how long before we DO see MS Linux? Mong.

    Dang useless weather satellites, who cares how the weather is going to be, hurricanes are much more fun if you no warning about them.

    I didn't say ALL space projects were a waste. Many are NOT. We're talking about this Mars petition thing here.

    Military recon satellites, a big effin' waste. I feel much more secure not knowing how much weapons my enemy has, and whether or not they're massing arms at my border. Let's just start a war on a whim, or a guess about an oncoming attack.

    Well, we could get really introspective, and wonder why we need weapons in the first place.

    The Mars Society is talking a $20 billion dollar price tag. Assume half the Earth is starving, poor and diseased, and we split that $20 billion among 3 billion people. $7 is going to make their life better?

    You have no idea. A few cents can per person can pay for a years clean water, a few more for grain, a few more for medicine. $7 is a HELL of a lot for a HELL of a lot of people.
