Anyone read Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy? I have heard it is a great series with plenty of entertaining sci-fi aspects and though provoking social/political discussions as well. First book was fairly enjoyable. Now I'm trying to slog through the second book and quickly losing interest due to it turning into a long, boring, slow soap opera set on Mars. Does it eventually get better, or should I burn them while I have the chance?
Vanilla people? Vanilla typically refers to the deep brown extract from the vanilla bean, which is itself nearly black once fully dried and cured. So the original poster is clearly referring to African tribesmen.
In fact, I would argue that we've been talking about bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, and gigabytes a lot longer than they've been cheating consumers on storage, so we have more of a right to use the term "megabyte" than they do. And it used to be that when you bought a 20MB hard drive, you received 20 * 1024 * 1024 bytes worth of storage. However, if you lost a sector your data was pretty much gone. These days, if they use the difference between GiB and GB to act as redundant failover sectors then I'm quite happy with the "loss" of storage space.
Sure, that's you, but could you imagine the space needed to do it for EVERY EMPLOYEE? If you think that's crazy, imagine the space needed if someone wanted to archive all web content on the internet and make it searchable? If someone were able to figure that problem out, I'm sure they could make a fortune.
What, exactly, does this have to do with my rights online? CmdrTaco thought that "Miscellaneous Legal Issues" was too verbose for use as a topic section, so YRO it is.
I built the entire POS system for my gf's business over the course of about 4 hours, in PHP. It works great.:) Only 4 hours? No wonder you call it a Piece Of Shit.
have you rehabilitated yourself? That's something Mr. Schwartz has in common with Nelson Mandela. Since his release from prison, Mandela has not reoffended. So the justice system works!
Well I got hit by something similar. I downloaded a torrent of Green Street Hooligans, didn't even watch it. Recieved an email from the campus computer folk, told me that Universal informed them of my "copyright infringement", and if I delete the file immediately and tell them that I did so, nothing would happen, but if I did it again, I would lose my Internet connection. I don't remember if they said what would happen if I didn't delete the file (which I did, I'm not going to stick my neck out for the principle of it) but I'm sure it would have been ugly. For anyone else facing this kind of situation, the proper response is certainly not "Yes, I deleted that file which I downloaded (thereby admitting my guilt to infringing upon their copyright)." The correct response is: "I found that my computer was recently infected by numerous spyware and trojan programs, so I reformatted the drive and reinstalled Windows. If there were any such files present on my computer, they are certainly now gone."
OK. No one got my South Park reference. I apologize. I would remove the comment if I could:( Just as a suggestion, perhaps next time you could try making it funny? I think almost everyone understood the horse/gate reference to be a twist on South Park. And while I'm at it:
If this is the case, than according... If BackupHDDVD does in fact decrypt encrypted content than per the DMCA... Okay, call me a grammar nazi but what kind of self-respecting nerd writes if/than statements?
In today's glossed over vapid music climate artists like Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and many others would not be taken seriously by the majors. I can hear it now.. Not marketable. Too nasally. Screams too much. Won't sell enough product. Not worth our investment. Sounds like a great business opportunity for someone who wants to start their own up-and-coming major picking up all these gems that the real majors ignore.
Its completely plausable he's got Win 2k3 installed, depending on what he's developing. Well it does say Win 2K3 but I have to wonder what the hell he's doing that's taking up that much memory after booting. We have a web server running Windows 2003 Standard which hosts just under 100 corporate sites that get on average hundreds of thousands of unique visitors per day and it's presently using 534MB of RAM (yes, I just checked) running now for a few weeks hosting some non-trivial.NET sites. So I have *no* idea why his desktop would use up 1.6 GB by default. The only thing that comes to mind is that it might be a poorly tuned SQL Server (he should probably throttle the memory settings) or, of course, it may be an actual legitimate need to run applications which are RAM hungry such as large simulations.
I've been out of my parent's basement for little more than a year and I have only good things to say about the dating market. So far, there doesn't seem to be any lack of demand for a good geek. I've got to admit, though, I feel a little disloyal at this point. Several girls have come my way and I've taken them. My list of ex-girlfriends is starting to make me look a bit restless and it worries me. Until now I've just chalked it up to 'It's just hormones,' but now another chick has been dropped into my lap. Would I be digging my own grave by taking this girl? It'd be only my fourth time speaking to a woman in 19 years but each offered benefits and a 30% to 40% increase in cup size. I know better than to put a price on satisfaction but I'm pretty certain I'd be happy with her even though all I ever do with girls is hold hands. Is being branded as a 'hot potato' enough to keep you from switching? What's your price on this stigma?
Microsoft is behaving like a beached whale. Are they in more trouble than anyone knows? All this recent FUD including Ballmer. BALL My Eyes Red? Cray baby cry... I never would have thought it possible, but my monitor actually frothed just from displaying that comment.
also, Torvalds/SUSE never got convicted under anti-turst laws and they dont have the reputaton of money grabbing bitches Microsoft has. That must be why everybody refers to IBM as International Busine$$ Machine$.
Apparently nobody has demonstrated a security flaw with qmail yet. Having buffer overflows is so 1990s... wasn't this what everyone has been mocking Microsoft for?
And lastly, the word is "kudos" -- writing "Kudo's" means "belonging to Kudo" which I don't think you mean.
Good month. Finding lots of bugs, and fixing them, is a good thing. We don't need to pretend Windows is perfect and rosy and all nicely secure and won't ever need a patch or an update. We're realists on this side of the Microsoft fence. We know that Windows is only as good as the people working on it.
I'd like to extend a hearty thank you to this researcher for making Windows even better.

So one week later everybody jumps in the new pool and gets leprosy, right?
It sounds like Linux needs a good dose of DRM to keep those keys secure.

Okay, that's gotta be one of the most well delivered comments I've read in a while. I'm glad I wasn't drinking coffee at the time!
What an amazing post. Someone mod this guy up up down down left right left right!

Wow, seven instances of "M$" in one post. Do you write about "Linu$ Torvald$" or "$u$e Linux" as well?
A priest, a rabbi, and a horse walk into a bar. The bartender says "What is this, a joke?"
