    On the other hand, Microsoft is about to launch a major campaign for Windows Phone 7. My inside source tells me they have a marketing budget of $1 Billion. I had to capitalize and spell that out, writing $1B doesn't seem to do it justice.

    I would be willing to bet that it is not increasing signal, but rather, decreasing the noise coming from the other direction. You could test my theory by trying (just keeping with the cooking utensils) a baking sheet, or a piece of aluminum foil.
    I put a wire mesh behind one of these, and it improved my reception.

    Every page is 90% ads and crap, with the text in a teeny little column.

    Unless I am missing something, that is a testimony to the X Window System and not Java; Java does not need to know anything about networked displays, but rather it simply needs to use the standard X (and GL) client libraries.

    So... your favourite Java feature is something written in C around 25 years ago?

    I think (b) is certainly not a trivial issue.

    Why? Because an install of WinXP can be compromised before you finish the installation of Service Pack 2. You are required to connect to the net *before* you have secured your machine.

    Another aspect of (a)- smaller target - is the number of internet-visible services running on your machine. On both WinXP and FC4 installs I typically need to uncheck a number of services. I would like to claim more on WinXP, but I can't recall for certain right now!

    His whole article bypasses the issue of how a virus gets onto the computer in the first place. I think we call all agree it's more likely for a Windows box to be infected.

    That reminds me of a UNIX admin we used to have at our company.

    We would ask for a backup or a restore, whatever, of some folder.
    He would actually use the cp command.

    I don't think he ever figured out what a symlink was or what it was for.
    Let me assure you, that the 'cp' command does not handle symlinks well, and some other types of files.

    Repeated beatings about the ears and nose did nothing to change his ways.

    'tar' on the other hand, does a great job.

    Hmmm, perhaps the others could not 'pause', but put the show in slow motion... really slow motion... and rock it back and forth... There! That's not paused, and has about the same effect.
