In my 25+ years of servicing computers, I have yet to see a HDD suffer a head crash (other than from a laptop being dropped while running). The failures I've seen are bad sectors, failing motors, overheating control boards, and corrupted firmware. I have, however, seen plenty of SSD drives fail without warning, including my own.
The biggest problem isn't how long they last, it's not knowing when they're going to fail. I've had two SSD drives die on me that were under a year old. The worst part of it is there's no recovery of data possible, so unless you're backing up daily, expect some data loss. At least with a regular HD failure, you know that worst case scenario your data is still recorded on the physical platters, even if it takes you some work to access it again.
It doesn't matter about the small sample size in terms of man's history, that is irrelevant. What does matter, however, is the accuracy of the measurements. There are large concentrations of temperature stations in populated areas, and very sparse recording stations in the inhospitable regions of the world. For example, there are 46 stations responsible for all of Antarctica. That's one station for every 304,000 square km. The same situation can be found in the Arctic, the Himalaya's, the Sahara, the Gobi desert, the Amazon...and yet their global temperature is supposed to be accurate to ±0.05C. The satellite record and the GISS surface temperature record disagree by more than a half degree, and yet we're supposed to believe that GISS is accurate to five one-hundredths of a degree!
...because it's not about finding a simple solution any more. Once you get the politicians involved (big thanks to Al Gore), it turns in to "how can we use this potential threat to our advantage". It's now progressed from a simple solution (build more nuclear and hydro) to a multi-trillion dollar industry of conferences, research grants, earmarks, kickbacks, subsidies, and taxes. This nonsense battle has been going strong for more than a decade. We could've just built a dozen reactors and shut down a hundred coal fired generation plants. But that doesn't get the politicians the long term revenue streams they want for their reelection campaigns.
Just a quick question about this...if the satellite record shows.57 degC, and the GISS record shows a full degree, what does this mean, exactly? The discrepancy between the two values is greater than the error margins of the two sets. So how are we supposed to trust that the information is accurate, when we get contradicting values that go beyond the supposed error margins?
That's because software developers can release updates to google apps without them going through the approval process again. Apple screens and tests all updates to ensure they're safe, and it can take several weeks for updates to finally appear in the Apple Store.
You've hit the nail on the head. Kids and iPods aren't ever factored in to the 'smartphone market share' numbers, but my guess is 50%+ of the iOS sales are actually kids on iPods. I'm basing this guess on the behaviors of my 5 kids, 3 of which have iPods and regularly spend money on them, and the two oldest have Android phones and have never spent a penny on purchases.
...I'm going to have to say that the top three methods of virus infection I see are java, Adobe Flash, and Adobe Reader. I have yet to see a quicktime or iTunes virus. These two Apple titles may be the most popular outdated software, but it's definitely not the most popular exploit being used.
It's about the quality of the models. SI swimsuit models are stunningly beautiful. Playboy used to have that niche too... there were playboy bunnies, and then there were the rest of the porno mag girls. At some point, though, and I'm not sure when, they seem to have lost that edge.
It's a poorly written summary. The deal is, the filmmaker gained access to the hackers by talking to a bunch of hollywood actresses. One of them agreed to give him access to her account, and he then photoshopped her face onto some naked pics and uploaded them to her account. He then contacted the hacker group, claiming to have hacked her account, and they let him in.
Well duh! Most of the hottest women in the world aren't very good at acting, that's why they become models. Most of the best actresses aren't hot. To get top acting talent AND top looks in a single individual is a rare find.
Don't forget that not all VW models are made by VW. The Routan, for example, is a Dodge Caravan rebranded. On top of that, the European market is more diesel than gas, and the diesel engines are far superior to the gas engines.
Horseshit. Find me a single customer who cared about the emissions output. People buy diesel cars for the durability and the fuel economy, and VW delivered on those. The only people they defrauded was the EPA. How did this cost customers money? How did it cost taxpayers money? The only people this really affected were the shareholders.
This is completely incorrect. Sodium Benzoate does NOT cause cancer. However, when mixed with Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), it can form benzene, which is a carcinogen. And Potassium Benzoate can also form benzene in the presence of Ascorbic acid.
Well first, Germany wasn't fighting on two fronts, they had captured all of Western Europe except for England. Second, Germany didn't invade during the winter. The plan was to crush the Russian armies decisively during the spring and summer and be done before winter. Germany was supplying it's war effort by getting the resources it needed from Russia in exchange for manufactured equipment. As the war progressed, Germany began to fall behind on their end of the deal, and Russia began to threaten Germany with cutting off their supply of resources. This was one of the big reasons for Hitler's decision to attack Russia as early as possible. However, the Italians were making a mess of things in southern Europe, and Germany was forced to divert their forces to clean up the mess Italy made. This resulted in the German offensive against Russia starting 6 weeks later than originally planned by the German High Command. The end result was the German army beginning to encircle Moscow just as the first blizzards of the Russian winter set in at the start of December. Had they started the offensive in May as originally planned, it's quite possible that the German army would have captured Moscow and the additional 500,000 new Russian troops being trained there. If that had happened, the Russians wouldn't have had any troops left on the western front with which to start a counterattack.
If an advanced civilization existed nearby, and they were advanced enough to realize that they probably weren't alone in the universe, might they have taken the precautions of removing/masking any signals that would signal their presence?

Calm down there spazzy boy, you might burst a gasket....

They're extremely effective at extracting the truth from the lies if done properly.
Probably this

Nice opinion. Too bad you're wrong: http://www.popularmechanics.co...

My 2003 Jetta is closing in on 400,000KM, or 250K miles. VW Diesel engines are far more reliable than anything Ford has made in the last 25 years.
Except for the $5.9 BILLION DOLLARS it borrowed in 2009!

Sodium Benzoate is NOT a carcinogen as claimed by popo, and as pointed out in several replies.

...the thousands of tapes that were generated from backing up the systems that housed that data, prior to it being cancelled.
