" I really, really dislike having to pay 30-50 per add on on top of the monthly fees. Why can't more games do what Lineage II is doing? All expansions will be at no extra charge."
Because in America, people here are willing to pay that much. Maybe not you nor I, but the masses certainly will. These are the same kids who plop down $400 every time nVidia or Radeon takes a shit, so blame them. Personally, I think having to pay that much for the initial game is ridiculous with the new $15/month fees people are starting to have. A Tale in the Desert had it right......download the free 24 day demo, if you like it sign up and keep playing.
Mods, please mod this steaming pile of flamebait crap down. Parent obviously has no idea what kind of work goes into producing a piece of machinima, let alone writing the script for one.
While your opinion may be that it sucks, a very LARGE number of people think there is some very decent machinima out there, Red Vs Blue being the best example. I think it is one of the funniest cartoons I've seen on the net and the way they produce it shows that they put a lot of effort into planning it out.
You also seem to not understand that they aren't necessarily doing it because they're huge fans of the game, it just happens to be their medium. What an extremely ignorant post.
If you think you can do any better, then please, by all means do so, until then I suggest you not comment on how poor you think the quality of their work is.
I agree with everything you said except the last bit.
There can be a standard contract for the company. The hiring person's boss might say.....you cannot offer more than X amount, no negotiating. In fact, that is a fairly common practice.
Actually, I had a similar thought, but it ended differently.
Every other week we see an announcement like this. It makes me wonder if in ages past, people took innovation and technological advancement like this for granted. Did it feel the same to live in the Renaissance? Seriously, I don't even worry about whether my computer will improve by orders of magnitude by the time I'm ready to purchase my next one.....because I've grown so accustomed to the scientists always beening 10 steps ahead.
Whats more, the technological advances we've made have enabled us to exponentially pick up the pace of our research. Really makes you sit back and ponder what people in the Renaissance could have done if they had the ability to communicate like we do with the net.
If anybody knows of any articles/papers on this topic, I'd love a link to it.
Agreed, and while I know it may be trivial to many people here, they have MUCH more important things to worry about. Such as running the company that pays your salary.
So if you hate them, rather than give them false data which people will believe to be true, you should have lied, gotten the free chocolate, and then told them that you lied to get the chocolate, and that many other people were likely to do the same.
Sorry if I came off hostile, but I wouldn't have pointed it out if it was an exception. I think people vastly underestimate how much good management there is out there, and how many smart users there are. Its just that you hear all the negative stuff and tend to remember it more.
I think you may be right about most of what you spoke of in your post. However, one thign that will almost ALWAYS stay in this country is jobs for people who need to be in touch in an intimate way with Americans so they can figure out what products need to be made to sell to them. Every country has different buying behaviors and product trends, and there really is no easy way to outsource a job that needs someone able to do that. There job is to be on the pulse of the people, and you can't necessarily do that from overseas.
'We spent so much time distancing ourselves from management and users (granted, it's justified and understandable)"
Why do you feel this comment is true? Not all management sucks, and not all users are morons, and it is assumptions like those that make people disrespect IT workers. Perhaps you should take some of your own advice.
I completely agree with you. Now, I know I'll get flamed for this comment because of the industry I chose to work in, but advertising is much more stable than IT work these days (I can't believe I actually said that).
I went to school for CS in the beginning, and realized, hey, I don't want to be a code monkey my whole life, I want to be calling the shots. So I switched over to advertising/marketing, and started learning about business.
You see, now that I have basic business skills and people skills, I am much more in demand than someone who's job it is to push buttons. I know that its important to make a product, but as we've seen time and time again, its not necessarily the product that sells the product, its the marketing behind it.
Also, while I understand that the difference between the job market for advertising and IT is different in that people get fired when their job goes overseas in IT, in advertising, its just a slow period for the agency, and people get shuffled around between agencies basically. But still, people in advertising have come to accept it as part of the job. You WILL get laid off, its not a question of if, but when. And thus we've developed some serious networking skills, which I'm sure would benefit any IT worker.
Adapt dammit! That's what humans do! That's great that you are in a field you love, but if it doesn't pay what you wish it paid, guess what, maybe YOU need to take the initiative and either get new skills, or figure out a new way to make money. Because things aren't going to change any time soon despite how many articles may be posted about the subject on Slashdot.
Mods, I don't mean this post as flamebait, but it really irks me that people feel it is alright to sit and bitch and moan about their lost job when they take little to no action to better their skillset or connections. These are basic business skills, and despite whatever fairyland some people choose to live in, IT is a part of the businessworld, so they have to play by the rules too.
Ok, I really think this is NOT as big an issue as people want it to be. For any decently popular online FPS, there WILL be plenty of servers. Look at bf1942, it has thousands. And thousands more for Desert Combat.
You almost NEVER have a problem finding a server that's fun to play on. The real server problems arise with the new mods that MIGHT have good potential, but unfortunately only a few servers......and only a few good ones out of those. Forgotten Hope is a good example, as is Pirates.
I know you're not supposed to complain about moderation, but whoever moderated this flamebait is an idiot. Parent said you wouldn't see doom on the GBA because it lacked a keyboard and mouse. I pointed out that he was wrong, and that a FPS had already been brought to the GBA successfully, Wolfenstein, which was already released by someone for the GBA. Thus proving that Doom would be no problem. Seriously....I never usually complain about mods, but this one was just plain WRONG.
Your trollish post makes it sound as if all Americans have their heads up their asses. Quite a few of us understand the changes that are going on and various ways to fix them.
What is holding us back (and I suspect giving you your skewed view of us) is that in this country, the real power is in the hands of a few people. And those people are making bad decisions to fix short-term problems without really addressing the long-term ones, because hey, they won't have to deal with it then.
I always thought one of the reasons was when you didn't tip the sky cap and they just entered a different destination airport for your bag by "mistake".
I hear that. Its so bad there was an article in the NYTimes about how everybody is slapping the "nano" buzzword onto their products and companies to woo investers and customers, regardless of whether or not it is actual technology.
I call bullshit on this story. You give no proof whatsoever, and you mention abilities that he had which would have set off alarms for the Verant staff monitoring the servers. While I know that cheating can be profitable in EQ, I think your story is a complete lie.
This works with things other than experience. 2 examples. First, while I was DMing, people kept asking to bribe me for magic items. So I said that if people brought me sushi, they'd get to roll for a magic item.
Next session, I had 2 people bring me two full boxes of sushi, and thats not cheap!
Another time, one of the fairly cute girls in our group (yes, there are cute D&D chicks), was about to get horribly killed and yelled "I'll give you a blowjob if you spare me, PLEASE!"
Well, she said it as a joke, but later that week well, lets just say her character lived, and services were exchanged.
Also, perhaps this stuff could give stuntmen a whole new level of safety while still giving them a lot of mobility.

Knowing EA, those bastards are probably looking for a way to charge for it.
To build hype.
There is no frat house.

Well, considering I have a store bought game called....oh.......Wolfenstein for the GBA...I'd think Doom would be pretty easy to pull off.
