Aight troll, I'll bite, but only to clear up this misunderstanding of what the difference between advertisers and marketers is, since you obviously have no clue, and only seek to attempt to spread your stupidity.

It's very simple actually, people in advertising (not advertisers, those are people who pay for the services of ad agencies) work on their agency's side. People in marketing work on the client (advertiser's) side.

That's the only real difference. It's a simple matter of agency vs client side.

This is slashdot, since when WASN'T it acceptable to not RTFA? My comment was based on the image itself, not the article.

And whats the point of making such judgemental comments about my post without first reading it correctly?

You are correct that given its educational slant, this might be more acceptable. However, if they were to read the same summary I did, I'm sure they wouldn't have picked up on that simple message either, as it was not in the summary.

First off, I'm in advertising, which is different than marketing, I suggest you look up the difference some time. As I stated, I didn't catch the subtlety that the mascot is for a subproject of OO because it was not in the summary and I did not RTFA.

And no, this isn't flamebait, this is an observation made by someone who is in the advertising industry.

If OO wants to have a shot at gaining more credibility in the business world, this logo is not the way to do it.

While I most certainly respect the creativity and thoughtfulness that went into this...corporations won't "buy" into the cute, loveable image. They want something that looks a tad more professional. Even the Linux penguin looks much more cleancut in this. So, perhaps the concept for the logo has some potential, but this current crude implementation does not.

I just called my little brother up and told him to IMMEDIATELY let me know if they start anything like that at his school. I told him why what they are doing is wrong (he didn't see a problem with a company paying to have their corporate interests taught as lesson in school), and that I would give him a list of questions/topics to bring up in class if they tried to push any of this stuff on him.

So what sorts of questions/comments would you guys bring up if you were in this class, if you wanted to poke holes in it and rally the class behind you?

Also, you seem to be ignoring the MASSIVE anime community presence on IRC. If anything rivals the porn and warez traders, its the anime traders, and I've got news for ya, if its not licensed in the US, its alright to trade it.

I only use IRC for anime currently, so there's your legit use for it troll.

Correction, the ad model has proven to be of dubious effectiveness with companies that have no credibility.

Google is perhaps the most trusted company on the net today, and with the traffic they get, I'm not surprised at all that they can support all their financial needs with ad revenue, especially with some of the big bucks that large companies dump into advertising with Google. I challenge you to show evidence showing that their advertising business model cannot support their costs, because so far you've done nothing but toss up tin-foil hat ideas without any proof to back it up, and as someone else so kindly pointed out to you, Google is ALREADY in the black.

It may not be something criminal YET is a key point as well. Laws have a tendency to slide down the slippery slope, and the less the government knows about me the better. You see, what you fail to realize is that its not Joe Consumer that makes companies big profits, its their B2B contracts that rake it in.
