That is why you have translators working in teams. We always made sure we had someone who was a natural english speaker working on the translation team. That is assuming of course that the actual translator wasn't just bilingual. When they weren't, the translator would discuss the best way to translate things with the english person, so they would finally agree upon a translation that stayed as true to the japanese as possible, while still making complete sense to the viewer. If that wasn't possible, as in the case of some cultural/language jokes, we'd put notes in small type somewhere on the screen to explain. In fact, MANY fansubbing groups do this, and it teaches you something about japanese culture instead of just staring blankly and not getting a joke.

I hope you meant all of that in jest, because that was a pretty ignorant comment to make.

Many people have said that since the cat is now out of the bag with P2P usage that the labels need to use them to their advantage instead of fighting them. What do you think about the use of P2P as a free form of advertising? Is technology and society at the point where people will no longer pay for their music? Should mp3s and the like be used as promotional tools to try to get people to see concerts and buy other merchandise? Do you think this business model would have the same earning potential as the previous one of selling CDs?

"and the compulsory online subscription will be $9.95 per month, with game prices ranging from $2.99 to $50."

Now this is what is pissing me off. You KNOW this will be like BuyMusic.com. There will be one or two crap titles at 2.99 and the rest at 50. What I want to know is what does that cost get me? Can I download the game as many times as I want while I still use the service? Or do I have to pay for it each time I download it? What happens when the HDD runs out and I have to start deleting games, but later want to download them again...I'll bet I have to pay full price to do so.

This sounds almost exactly like the new cellphone my little brother just got. He paid a couple hundred for the phone, has an ungodly monthly fee for service, will pay $7/month for web access once his 3 free months run out, and he has to pay for individual games and ringtones. But guess what, once he ran out of space for the games, he deleted some...and then had to pay full price to redownload them. This is yet another consumer device which will feed off the masses and attempt to sucker people in with underhanded marketing techniques.

Well, as a member of the old Anime Fury team, I can tell you that we work very hard to get top of the line translators. We ONLY look for people who are fluent in japanese. You'd be surprised how many fansubbing groups will turn down a translator who knows japanese pretty well just because he's not fluent. And we typically had more than one translator to check the script. Now....some groups like Anime Fury were determined to put out high quality, rather than high quantity...like Anime Junkies. It really varies group to group, and once you're in the scene for a while, you tend to pick up on who puts out decent stuff and who doesn't.

After that, players can choose to download an additional mission every week for a monthly fee of about $10."

Anybody else get outraged at the audacity of that pricing? I'm sorry, I will NOT pay $10 a month for a new fucking level. This isn't even a MMORPG. This would be the equivelant of asking people to pay $10/month for a new mod for halflife or bf1942.

And what if you signed on after a few missions had been released. Does the $10 entitle you to all the old missions? What if you don't want a certain months mission, do you still have to pay for it? Aside from the fact that charging a large fee for a new mission is insulting and will not work, I think what would stand a better chance is charging a VERY LOW fee, like $1-$2 per new mission. That way you could get the ones you want, and avoid the ones you don't want. But fact is, with every other FPS game out there (that will always be a step above this made-for-marketing crud) giving free updates and levels away fairly frequently, and extensive modding communities, this game won't stand a chance.

Very good point, wish I had mod points for ya. I don't think people would be very happy if someone made a mod where you had to take planes hostage and crash them into buildings (although I have to admit, a mod like that would be very intriguing). Whoops, I'm probably gonna show up on Carnivore or w/e for saying that.

But anyways, the point is....if you make a game like this that has an inherently political view, someone will mod it, and fight political fire with fire. This game would be begging for it.
