I do wish they provided that solution as I would purchase the files if they were available for download. I know they have DVDs coming out, but I don't really like to keep a large collection of discs, and I know I could rip to my computer, and compress to DivX myself but its a pain in the ass.
" Slashdot is an excellent example. Stories are posted here every day, and for those of you who RTFA you may notice, as I have, that the comments on slashdot often provide far more interesting insight."
Interesting observation. It is my belief that the reason why nobody ever RTFA is BECAUSE the comments are more interesting. I know that's why I personally never RTFA. Not to mention that the important facts of the article are usually summed up throughout the course of reading people's comments, as well as seeing additional bit of relevant information attached to those important facts.
Thanks to Kazaa-lite and BT, I'll still be able to get my BT fix. I wish Fox provided a reasonably priced, high-quality, quickly-downloadable version of shows they take off the air, like Futurama. Oh well, back to the P2P hunt.
"You could exercise your right not to read it. Slashdot has always been about things Rob and Jeff find interesting, though, so you'll do better by just getting used to it."
Yes, I realize I can just not read it, in fact I said so. And based on some of the ads...err.....articles lately, it seems Rob and Jeff are only interested in the color green.
And as for getting used to it? Yes, I could be a good little sheep and just try to fit in, or I could bring the subject to the foreground, try to generate some noise through it, and try to get changes made that would be beneficial for the Slashdot community.
What I find amusing is that the majority of +3 and up posts are commenting on how this is obviously an ad placement. I completely agree, and while I am upset about it, it certainly is Slashdot's perogative as to what they post in terms of stories. However, since there has been an overwhelmingly large number of complaints about this, will anything be done? Of course not! Have any of the higherups ever commented on this issue? Of course not! Will they ever? Of course not.
As much as I hate how this happens, what recourse exists for us to get the changes made? None. O well, at least there are some other interesting stories.
You are ignorant, I am stating that there is a distinction between the various legal terms, you are mixing in fanciful descriptive terms that might describe a situation. I got news for ya, when illegal file-sharing is handled in the courts, they don't give a shit what the common term for it is, all they care about is the legal definition. Since the 'war on piracy' has turned into a legal battle, it is now appropriate to use the correct legal terminology.
" That's the common term for it. You're annoyed at that? Tough. I'm annoyed at people that use cold, clinical words like "infringment" so that it won't sound as bad; the implication being that since they don't agree with the notion of copyright in the first place, they'll try to make piracy sound as harmless as possible."
The common term for it is irrelevant, the CORRECT term for it IS copyright-infringement. That is the legal term used, and this is a legal issue, so you really can't mix terms, I mean, for example, murder is NOT manslaughter.
"3) Laugh as you get the pink slip and someone in India takes your job"
Not that they're any better. Aside from not being to understand half of what they say, they are equally, if not more useless than techies in america. I'm not being racist, I'm just saying that distance matters to some extent. Would you really give two shits about helping some guy in another country who you could barely understand?
Anyways, so I called about not being able to download the drivers/unloading software for my HP digital cam. They used to have it for download on their site, it was no longer there, and my CD was at home when I needed it immediately at work. So after reading through her script, she still couldn't answer my question....checked with someone else, said that its off the site because they are probably updating that software/driver and it would be back soon. Now, this was last updated in '01, so I am fairly confident that it will not be returning to the site for download. However, HP is oh so kind as to let you ORDER THE CD with the software/driver on it. Bloody hell, if that didn't make me feel like they were trying to milk me, I don't know what would. So basically they're stripping their existing support of my product, and making me pay for it. Thanks a lot HP, I sure won't be buying anything from you again!
You are certainly entitled to your opinion of my post, but your comment merely shows your lack of intelligence. I don't need to brag about her, I merely pointed out she was an extremely attractive girl, and to give some credibility, I explained that she worked at hooters, which is known for its attractive waitresses. The reason I pointed that out though was to then explain how situations which are very common and easily dealt with by natural extroverts, can have long lasting and sometimes negative impacts on those who are 'fake extroverts'. So my cowardly anonymous friend, stop trolling, read a little harder, and if you want to discuss something, try posting intelligently, instead of trolling. It's much more effective.
This sounds like an interesting book. But keep in mind that your environment may play a large part of how you turn out. See, I'll bet I am an innate introvert. Partly due to genetics, partly due to severe social issues (its apparently NOT ok to stalk girls) in middleschool during which I developed Social Anxiety Disorder. Yet, senior year of highschool and now in college, I have done an almost complete 180. I dress very well, I guess girls would consider me good looking, I'm intelligent (well, depends on your definition), and a quick thinker. How did this happen?
Well, my theory is that by being an introvert so long, and wanting to "belong" and "be normal", I studied psychology and sociology just by observing people and researching. This gave me so much knowledge that I could start faking being extroverted when put on the spot.
Fast forward a bit and now whenever I am in a social situation where I need to speak to people, i am EXTREMELY extroverted. Yet I don't necessarily enjoy being in all those situatiosn...and often times wish I could just go back to sitting in the corner and being quiet. But I can't do that now because I feel compelled to be an extrovert otherwise people will look down on me.
Another interesting thing to note is that most of my social problems initially developed because of girls. And surprise, surprise, I still can't approach girls for the life of me, except in rare situations where I've totally blanked out and just went ahead and did it. Whats even worse is that now after having managed to date an EXTREMELY attractive girl (college sophmore hooters chick when I was a junior in HS), my standards are way above what they should be, and I can't seem to settle for someone who is more around my social skill level.
So a word of caution to all those who would strive to be extroverts when you are naturally introverts. It can make life seem better in many situations....business...parties....girls (sometimes). But ultimately, nothing can be gained from attempting to be someone who you aren't. And you will find that once you reach a certain plateau in that journey to be someone you aren't, you can't go back to who you once were.
"What's really messed up though, is how ONLY people who read slashdot seem to know anything about it."
Fortunately, I have seen a couple stories in the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal about this, so there is some hope that other people read about it.
" IBM has clearly been tracking SCO FUD and mentions specific quotes from SCO execs that are damaging."
Which is exactly why IBM has been silent this whole time. Saying anything during a suit can be damaging or give your opponent an advantage. What I'd really like to see would be the faces of IBMs legal department when they first got wind of this whole SCO joke. I'll bet in the history of law a lawyer has never contorted his face so much whilst laughing.
"For all the predictably negative comments made by the Linux community, no one it seems, is preparing to challenge SCO and get this resolved."
Well, IBM is countersuing, Redhat has filed suit, so has SuSe. And just wait till SCO dies under the gavel, because once its proven they were just spreading FUD and this was all made up, everybody who was hurt in any way whatsoever by them will come out of the woodwork to try to get some money out of them.
Why don't they offer more expensive stamps that allow the letter to be tracked. That way its optional. If I want to send random things in the mail to people, thats my right dammit. And if I want to send myself letters on valentines day, I don't want some kid using a barcode scanner to figure out that I'm sending them to myself! Err....not that I would do that.....
But seriously, this would be a great optional thing, and a much cheaper solution than fedexing something if you want to track it. But it would never be optional if implemented, because its there to fight terrorism....so EVERYBODY needs to be watched, because ya never know who might be a terrorist!
Yeah, I'll buy a car based on a game....once the car companies allow game developers to realistically model damage caused by crashes. Ever notice how when you crash in a car that has been officially licensed in a game, the car shows no damage? That's because the car makers don't want people to see their car get beatup, lose performance, or possibly kill the driver. Give me a game where I can die in the game by crashing (realistically), and I'll consider it. Not to mention that that would make a bitchin game as well!
" Does nobody else here remember the various articles about the way the racing games take liberties with the real physics of cars "
Do you remember the articles on how much effort was put into GT3 to make the cars as realistic as possible? Not to say there isn't room for improvement though.
I'm curious, I don't really know all the details so bare with me here. Did they actually sell any copies of your CD and make money off of it? Or was it just offered up? If they did make money off of it, are you going to be getting any money out of them? Perhaps you should sue them for 90 billion just like the RIAA;)
Read more carefully next time.

And now she's richer than the Queen. Sorry, I won't be shedding any tears for her if she loses a little money when her next book comes out.

No, that's still fantasy, reality would be the elf babe sounding like a 13 year old boy with his voice cracking.

Fortunately, I have seen a couple stories in the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal about this, so there is some hope that other people read about it.
(Darl is sitting with head in hands, wondering how this all happened)
IBM Legal Team: "hehe, noobs."

Wasn't that how the Metaverse in Snowcrash was?
