"I don't even think our president knows what opensource is."
I disagree. I'm sure Bush is aware of open source. I'd bet anything that his advisors have informed him that open source is a threat to our capitalist system and that it must be eliminated.
I get to pay per song, I get to burn some of them, I get to pay a monthly subscription, AND I get Real's quality and un-intrusive software! Sign me up dude, I'm there!
Microsoft claims it's not underwriting SCO's Legal Fees.
Microsoft claimed in its anti-trust case that divulging its source code could undermine national security. Then it proceeded to give the source code to India, China, and to former Soviet nations.
Also in the anti-trust case, Microsoft claimed again and again that Windows could not run without Internet Explorer. Until the government showed how simple it was.
Microsoft claimed that there was no DOS in Windows 95, I clearly remember the "DOS is dead" signs from the launch. But yet, Windows 95 simply ran on DOS.
Microsoft claimed, like Apple, that it too found a person who had switched, only in this instance from the Mac to the Wintel platform. Unfortunately, that person never existed and was made up by marketing.
Microsoft claimed in an advertisement in South Africa that Windows XP was so secure that it would eliminate hackers. However, the governmental agency in charge of truth in advertising there forced Microsoft to pull the ad.
I could go on and on. Why would ANYONE ever believe Microsoft?!
About 6 months ago I built my own computer/TIVO based around ATI's AIW Radeon 8500DV, which comes with their fantastic RemoteWonder. ATI's latest software has a 30 second skip feature, plus you can set up custom buttons to skip back or forward 3 seconds to get exactly where you want to be.
My family can watch the recorded shows on any computer throughout the house. We can pause live TV. ATI's software identifies the station and gives the program's name (which is great for surfing). You can also set it up to check what's on all of your favorite channels at the same time!
Plus, you can use if to store you music collection (which you can also play throughout the house) and for games.
And best off all, you can build such a system for less than $500 bucks and you'll never have to pay monthly fees.
I've always suspected that about cows, that's for offering some proof!
Seriously, though, I don't believe it. I just brought it up because my dad owned an original copy of Bernard's "The Hollow Earth." I used to read it all the time as a kid, but even then I thought it was utterly absurd.
I'll say it again. When you sample you make an exact copy of a portion of a work and use it in a larger work of your own. When you quote you take an exact copy of a portion of a work and use it in a larger work of your own. These are identical. Exactly the same. Equal. Synonymous. Should I go on?
I think samples should have protection when they are being used as hooks. E.g., Vanilla Ice ripping off Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure" to create "Ice Ice Baby."
But, on the other hand, if you're not using a sample for its hook value, why use it?
The best solution: Create your own music! If you find a song with a great drum loop, don't sample it, create a better beat! It's one thing to borrow from another's style, but to use the exact same sample shows NO creativity!
Here is what Gates is essentially saying, "Don't worrying about us taking over control of your computer, because you can turn the 'Next Generation Secure Computing Base' off."
First, notice that he's admitting that when the "Next Generation Secure Computing Base" is turned on, we will lose control of our PCs. He doesn't even attempt to deny it.
Second, if this is the "Next Generation Secure Computing Base", what was the "Previous Generation Secure Computing Base".
Third, the "Next Generation Secure Computing Base" has NOTHING to do with security. It solely has to do with giving the copyright industry complete and utter control of their product. When the "Next Generation Secure Computing Base" is in place, expect to pay EVERY time you watch or listen to anything produced by the television networks, the RIAA, and the MPAA.
I'll never forget after one all night Doom session, leaving work down a hallway when the elevator door opened. I literally jumped to the side of it before realizing that I was no longer playing.
It's perfectly legal to resell your CDs. It's legal to make a copy for your own personal use. However, once you sell those CDs, the law is clear that you have to delete any copies you made.
Oh I agree that people are having troubles. I've read about it numerous times. I just never experienced it firsthand nor do I know anyone who experienced such problems firsthand. Maybe I and everyone I know are just lucky.
I keep hearing from people like you who have trouble with VIA/AMD systems, and I'm just perplexed.
For myself, friends, and family I've built 7 VIA/AMD systems and each have been rock solid. Absolutely no problems. And with the money I saved buying the VIA/AMD combo versus an Intel product, I was able to buy better graphic cards, more ram, and larger hard drives.
My god, what's up your butt? Jungle Guy's advice may have been a little obvious, but it is still utterly valid. What's with all the anger? I hate to imagine if he posted something totally stupid.
I agree. My first computer had a 133MHz Pentium. I then upgraded to a 233PII. Then to a 550III. Even though my current system has a 1700+ XP, the 550 isn't exactly slow. In fact I doubt if my wife could tell he difference.
I had planned on upgrading to a 2600+ XP when the prices go down, but the only reason I see to do it is for Doom III. I certainly won't be doing it to speed up day-to-day tasks as my 1700+ XP is fast enough for me.
We track you down via your IP address, come to your house, and beat on you with tire irons until you buy something. Even Mozilla won't be able to block that!

The MacNet article is worth a read. Here's the MSNBC editorial it mentions:

No, sampling is analogous to quoting. A sample is an exact copy of a piece of a work. A quote is an exact copy of piece of a work. See?
Should samples be copyrighted?

"why aren't the benefits of lower production costs being passed on to the consumer?"
Because monopolies can price anyway they want!

Why do you NEED clothes, a house/apt, a car, a computer? Why do we NEED anything but food and air?!

"Cartoons, text..."
Sure, but EVERYTHING else will look like crap. How is EVERYTHING else looking like crap considered quality?!
How long will it be until it's overturned?
