Judging from the success of the iPod, Apple has shown that "jack of all trades expert at nothing" devices are not what all customers want. Integration is one thing, but quality is another. The iPod does one thing best and that is to be an audio player. I just hope Apple doesn't sway to far with the iPod and turn it into a jack of all trades devices.

There are indeed thinking people who align with a particular political party and are not simply sheeps looking for a shephard, towing the party line on every issue.

It certainly is easier for you to make your point by reducing the proportion of such *thinking* people amongst your sample of the population.

Because of the huge library of commercial software that is written in C++, they have no choice in supporting it if they want to continue their dominance in the desktop arena. Companies are not going to port their software to managed languages anytime soon because they don't HAVE to in order continue to selling their products. Microsoft also sent the message to them that they don't have to, so why would they? Even if they all started the conversion now, it would take many years to get everything converted. Even still there will be applications out there written in non-managed style. The bottom line is that it will be a very long time before everything on a Windows box (minus the OS of course) runs in a 100% managed environment.

Tabbed browsing is simply MDI implemented in a browser.

The real consumer is basically replaced with multi-billion dollar insurance company who is able to pay $1000 for a car bumper unlike the original consumer.

Of course, the consumer does incrementally end up paying far more then $1000 dollars for that car bumper due to their monthly fees and the fact that their rates would be increased in the event they file a claim to have their car bumper repaired. You could also design and build your own processor and then design and build a new type of computer around that, and then build your own custom OS, and then build your own software on top of that.

But most people will consider the effort not worth their time or effort and thus will go buy either a prebuilt PC or the parts to build one because "companies can provide it more economically".

Stallman's pie-in-the-sky thinking just doesn't match up with the realities of this world and I doubt they ever will. You will have to depend on something that is out of your ultimate control (ie non-free) and to suggest that a perfect world according to Stallman wouldn't have this constraint anymore is just plain silly.

Don't forget that this cuts both ways. Remember that the US also exports alot of other products besides just tech jobs to these foreign companies as well. So if we start taxing them for the people we export, they will in turn tax their companies that buy U.S. products or hire foreign tech workers. The end result being, you won't have a job here, nor will you have a job there.

So when politicians get up and make blanket statements like that, the are simply appealing to your emotions, not your head. We are in a global economy. Just adjust and get over whining about losing the jobs you probably don't even want to do anyway.

Afterall, when was the last time you ever made tennis shoes? Tech jobs have become the new white collar job of our time. If you don't like it, you are free to pursue other occupations. You certainly can bring suit with out your full stack of evidence. It happens everyday. Why do you think they call depositions "discovery"? The point you are missing is that you can sue whomever you want whenever you want. All you need is the court fee to file a suit. And then if the going gets rough for you, you simply drop the case. Plus, many defendants will settle out of court just to not have to take on the huge cost of litigation. The only thing you have to watch for is a counter sue by the defendant charging you of being frivilous. The problem there is that is it very difficult to prove a parties intent which is why you do not see many frivolous lawsuits being brought. Plus the courts do not like to second guess motivites of either party unless it is blatantly obvious, and any good lawyer can make anything not blatantly obvious.
