    They indirectly pay the radio stations to play only their songs? How is the situation today arguably different than when they were being busted for the payola scandals a few decades ago?

    The internet's changing things, but that doesn't do much for the people who signed with the labels five years ago.

    Where there's competition. I can choose between 5 Mbps cable modem and 30 Mbps FIOS, which means the cable company is busting their hump. My parents on the farm get to choose between dialup and smoke signals.

    It would be much cheaper to build an earth-based self-sufficent shelter that could survive something like a K-T event than it would be to build a self-sufficient moon base. Hell, they'd be identical in design except one wouldn't have to be, uh, moved to the friggin' moon.

    Oh please. Capital is usually the most limiting factor in an endeavor. Ask anyone trying to start a restaurant. Any putz can wait tables or wash dishes. *Nothing* relevant is going to happen unless someone is willing to front the money. And that someone is pretty much always a person who has saved and invested money, or a bank/investment fund handling the money of people who've saved and invested money.

    You know, there's a reason they call it capitalism instead of laborism.

    Hate to break this to you, but in capitalism, the price of everything is based on what someone thinks it is worth.

    You sound like someone who started buying tech stock in 1999 and sold in 2002. Works a lot better when you buy low and sell high.

    Companies wouldn't be buying ads from Google if they didn't think it made them money.

    If they declare it properly, they have to pay income tax on the money they get from the business. Dip into the till, and it's tax free income, baby. Even lowers the amount of tax the company has to pay.

    They'd need to know your address and how many people are in your household. You know, what they collect every 10 years in the census. And I imagine that if you wouldn't want to tell them where to send the prebate check (which is the same for every citizen, no matter their income level), they'd be OK with that.

    From what I've read in the papers lately, it's more likely you'll be blown up by a diesel/fertilizer truck bomb than shot dead. Looks like if the US wants to keep the terrorists out, it needs to build a couple thousand mile wall on the north border, too.
