I like how at BadCaps they have pictures of Mobos with BadCaps. Like how the hell are you supposed to tell which one is the bad cap?
If they had a probe or something next to the cap showing something kind of blinking red light or something...

Contrary to popular belief a large part of the GNFS (the last most important phase, ~80% of the algorithms run time) is actually sequential and can not be parallelized in any way shape or form.
This ransom model you speak of and credit to spolsky, is actually called "THE STREET PERFORMER PROTOCOL" suggested by Bruce Scheiner. Stephan King tried to implement it for one of his stories, but he failed to do it properly.
Why don't they just crack the bones of the person being held, I'm sure that would make all their other related cracking requirments go that little be faster if you know what I mean...:)
The money microsoft and in the end gates made from selling dodgy software/screwing people and companies over etc, some portion of it is being spent on important social issues.
The chances are if MS hadn't charged as much for their software as they did, the money saved by most people buying the software would likely not have gone to such causes at all. Most likely it would have gone to buying more aeron chairs and executive ass scratchers...
The amount of memory open office uses, yeah memory... Oh thats right a hundred other people already made that comment, must be open office hogging all my memory again, damn you open-office damn yooooou!:)
A group of people beginning to question their faith in tools developed over thousands of years to better understand the mechanics of life, leave them aside in favour for a hodge-podge of ambiguous ideas and directions.
Yeah but I believe the current administration thinks it can recoup the losses by controlling ALL future oil supplies out of the country and by also being head negotiator for ALL reconstruction projects that need to be undertaken (which btw were suspiciously needed once the Americans came into Iraq, I don't know what happened there....;)) in order for Iraq to become a civil and sovereign democracy.
From what I understand the help the US of A is giving Taiwan in that area is mostly self serving, in that it gives them a friendly base to lauanch an attack too or defend an attack from China.
Its now time to let other countries into the spotlight for change. That said the US has a much bigger problem than loosing faith in science and that is obesity.
You can't be the best you can be when your body is continually suffering from one of the many illnesses that long-term obesity brings.

it can sometimes also be known as the Manhattan distance
Actually this would take more of the rand bits into account hence produce
a more fair result:
if ((2.0 * rand() / RAND_MAX) == 0)
sentence -= (int)((123.0 * rand() / RAND_MAX) + 39);
