Many of my family is of Irish American descent, and many of them fund the IRA. They call them patriots, I say they stopped being patriots when they started using terrorist style activities to try and win their way. Bombs being placed in subways are not patriotic acts. A patriot fights for freedom in a country he loves, not attack the innocent people who is trying to free from oppression. OTOH, America, strangely enough, is founded on terrorism. We celebrate our proud heritage of performing terrorist attacks on English soldiers. It all depends on who wins the way which side ends up being "evil" to history. George Orwell would be proud.
I'm not saying the terrorist attacks are right, hell no. No one can say that. But Americans tend to believe what they want to. They tend to see everything with blinders on. We tend to act like we are the only people who have ever gotten terrorized, and that we are the great glowing good that will save the world from evil. But really, we are just scared little children, looking for someone to blame so we can beat them up and feel better when the world is safe again. I guess this sort of thing was easier when we had one big evil to blame all of our ills on. But after communist Russia fell, we had no one to blame anymore about the state of the world but ourselves. And Americans hate to look in the mirror, for we are fat and greedy, and it shines through like a beacon of pain.
Nor any finincial responsibilities other than yourself.
I spent two years between "real jobs" and had to work two or three minumum wage jobs just to make ends meet and help keep my child and my wife fed and in shelter. It's not laziness- it's a staggering economy.
Right now I'm back to work in IT, doing what I love (software design). But it was much harder to find work now than it was the last time I was out of work (right out of college, 5 years ago). The main problem I had looking for IT work is that I was over-qualified (I'm working aan entry level job right now. I had to convince my current employers that yes, I wanted to do this even though it was lower than my level of experience because finding a job as a lead programmer was taking way too long.)
Bigger and better things my ass. It's only bigger and better if it's still ours to achieve. If the jobs are over seas than there is nothing bigger or better.
Although I did like Spirited Away, it had a very Alice in Wonderland sort of feel. I can't stand listening to the English dubs though- that little girls voice in the English dubs is so whiney and annoying.
But yeah, Akira is the best. It is just fantastic. It's like blade runner and clockwork orange all in one. The manga is much better (because there is just so much more there), but the movie is just drop dead amazing.
Next I would say Vampire Hunter D, and the sequel as well. Then would come Macross Plus. Then would Lupin the third and the castel of Caligastero The list goes ever onward after that, including some pretty weird and obscure ones.

It basically does what was taken out of Longhorn- turns the filesystem into a database, and uses that for fast searching. It doesn't have the SQL and real-time queries that BeOS does, but it's hella fast and really cool. I've used it for bug-hunting code, since it searches for text inside documents hella fast.
It's much better than MS's shipped in search utility.
I never said it was un or anti patriotic, just not patriotic. The song Hammer Time is not a patriotic song.
What I was talking about is that most people think the lyrics have to do with us being patriotic americans, and this is our land to be proud of. And it's not about that at all.
And guess what? Communism is a form of political power as well as an economic structure. Just because we separate economics from politics does not mean every government does (well...we don't actual separate it, but we make a distinction of capitalism being separate from democracy. Communism is both a government and an economic structure).
Nothing wrong with people believing in communism. Woodie Guthrie, as I said, had a great reason to be - he saw his friends and family starving in the streets.
WTF- this land (the original song) is not a patriotic song. It was a proto-communist anthem. The lyrics are trying to get people to vote in communistic or socialistic changes into the American system. Makes sense when you think that this written during the dustbowl era, and Woody Guthrie was an active communist.
He really doesn't get it. Java is not uncool for any of those reasons. Grahm states in his essay why Java is now uncool. Because it was overhyped. Because we are told it's cool. It doesn't have street cred.
And a lot of people believed the hype when it came out, used it, saw it was too slow and got burned by the Hype. But in contrast, I see the same thing happening to Python. It's over hyped (although for the moment it has street cred), and it's slow.
If I was a Java Dev'r, I wouldn't take the words of a man who still thinks Lisp is god's gift to programming language, that C++ is inferior to C, and that hacker cred is worth a pile of shit in a compost heap.
*cough Negative Utopia cough*. Not distopia. Difference? In a Dystopian society everyone knows it sucks. It's usually a degenerative advanced In a negative utopian socity/future, everyone *thinks* it's great because no on knows any better, but a dark underbelly shows itself and the reader is let in on the flaws on the Utopian society.
Dystopian -> Blade Runner Negative Utopian -> Brave New World
Dystopian-> Lord of the Flies Negative Utopian -> 1984
Once upon a time the distinction was used more often. It seems this day, literary people use the same term for both. But to me that's as disgraceful as calling Sci Fi a branch of Fantasy.
I was thinking about recently getting into the shareware market- and I wonder- is their a market base for non puzzle games, like, let's say- platform games? Like Commander keen and such?
i know where to get better rpg's for free. Not pirated or hacked mind you, but for completely free. Because *some people* like doing this and giving away what they do, and other people like to rip off the public for half assed games.
becuase i know c, c++, asp, php, perl, ada, python, lua, java, delphi, pascal, object c, visual basic, qbasic blah blah blahitti blah blah blah
and i have to say i like proggin in java from time to time. i know alot of other people that do as well...and really, if it's compiled source (which is what you are comparing it to, correct, compiled C source? I'm not talking about JIT compilers but something like a true binary compiler (which exists, mostly as a GCC ext), Java is not much slower than other higher-level languages.
Why does programming languages have to be an either or situation? Everyone here assumes that anyone who programs in JAva does not know C/C++...why is that? Can't someone know multiple prog langs? I know many (too many too really list here) and find it asinine that people really think that everyone should just program in one lang.
BITCH!@
Not every liberal is prochoice. I'm not.
you can click on the google search bar and it will bring down a choice of search engines, including yahoo.

People need to see this. They can't ignore it.
An excellent film that my wife will never ever watch again. Another good one is Chinese Ghost Story.

Numbnuts.
I'm a geek and I'm cool. Just because you stick yourself into some saved by the bell retarded steroe type doesn't mean the rest of the world has too.

You can only dupe this one more time before it becomes many.

I'm soooo sick of language snobbery.
I was looking on CNN and etc for a news report- couldn't find one.
