In the UK, the game shop "Game" have (last time I went in anyway) a ten-day no-questions return policy. If you buy a game then you can take it back for any reason within that ten-day period. It leaves them open to pirates taking advantage but it helps boosts sales because people feel like it's a bit of try-before-you-buy, in case the game is poor.
I agree. I got moaned at for making a slippery slope argument on slashdot a while back. Regardless of whether it was valid or not, people posting back "slippery slope arguments are fallacious so you're automatically wrong" is not helpful or necessarily correct.
In fact, there is a real issue with EU law not allowing personal data to be sent to insecure countries, and I am amazed that UK corporations are allowed to outsource customer service to countries like India because of it
I believe the clause states something along the lines of "either the country must have equal data protection laws in place, or the company must make a special effort to comply with UK data protection laws no matter where the data is". Without the latter part of the clause, they would not even be able to send the data to the US (as you say, they have little data protection).
Indeed, it's like saying "a few people can't drive well when drunk (some people died), so now no-one is allowed to". Driving while on the phone is a patently (apologies for the pun!) bad idea.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the problem was not so much the technology, but rather than MS hold patents on the NTFS file system that means proper writing to disk would be infringing. Or am I getting things all confused?
I always actually envisioned C# as C followed by four plusses joined together, in a sort of "you've got C++? Well we have (C++)++!" kind of way, I presumed it was deliberately done too.
this show really puts the 'Wheadon is a goldenboy' meme to rest
To many, Firefly actually confirmed that he could produce good TV outside of the "Buffy-verse". As with most Whedon productions, it included a mix of great characters, good interplay between them, and a polished mix of drama and comedy. He often seems to inspire love-him-or-hate-him reactions, but has declared in the past that he would rather produce something loved by 1,000 fans than liked by 1,000,000 (or something to that effect).
Firefly lacks some of the usual cliches in Sci-Fi (aliens, time-travel, etc) and I personally prefer it to most of the other stuff being produced. But each to his own I guess!
Illegal? Certainly. You're asking people to DoS someone else
As I write, in the UK DoS is not illegal. I suspect this is also the case in many other countries. I have no idea about the US, but that's just one country in the mix.
The conflict isn't about "crushing" so-called Palestinians (more correct term is Palestinian Arabs, since Palestine is just a name for the region where Israel happens to be as well) -- it's about refusal of all Arab world (more than 20 countries) to accept existence of Israel. That is Arabs want to destroy Israel, whereas Israel wants not to be destroyed.
Or another way to look at it might be that the Arabs are annoyed with Israel setting themselves up on their land and now trying to grab more land. The problem with complicated conflicts like this is that it is almost impossible to have a neutral standpoint.
Europeans chose to be on the Arab side for many reasons, partially for their historical anti-semitism
That is an amazing generalisation across goodness knows how many countries. Do you have any justification for that, besides the Holocaust?
I have seen IM used properly for work. It is easier and quicker than e-mail if you want to send a quick message, and it is easier to have short dialogues than e-mail. As for phones, IM is less intrusive (if someone is busy, it doesn't disturb them) and if it's not urgent then IM is just easier.
The wonderful wikipedia to the rescue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googly
I believe it's a cricket reference. Out for a duck is out for no runs, breaking your duck is actually getting somewhere (i.e. making some runs).

Non-sweet sweets?
I second that :)
Penguin should retitle to Katie.org, Katie.net, Katie.golf.... whatever's free ;-)
Your students have experience flying around hard drives? ;-)
GNUsing?

Care to say why? I see some anti-C++ posts here, but no-one actually seems to be bothering with reasons, evidence etc.
Strictly speaking, neither has Firefly yet (I believe it got an airing on Sci-Fi or something). The DVDs of Firefly are out region 2 though.

I don't believe SCO have tried demanding anything from any UK companies. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Informative? WTF?

Brain Suck?

If only I had mod points...
Why is this "overrated"? It's a valid point!
Yeah I realised that after I posted... GMT/BST, I'll claim it was tiredness that caused it ;-)
