tyranny? You are equating anti-copying methods of music CDs with tyranny. I suggest a holiday in North Korea or somewhere simialr. Then come back and say you equate not being able to copy a britney spears album with tyranny. Or could it be you enjoy talking up the issue as a justification to copy stuff?
oh wow, what a stunningly well argued rebuttal of my post. I guess I've met a true intellectual titan here. Anyone stealing other peoples work and pretending its an act of rebellion is in no position to lecture others on maturity.
An interesting argument. I presume you would like copyrights term reduced, a valid point, and I would agree with you. How long is reasonbale? shall we say 10 years? lets go amd and say 5 years. So you agree that dishing out an operating system less than 5 years old is not a valid protest but just illegal copying for the hell of it agreed? And I don't recall many people issuing pirated games and applications waiting 5 years, so that the copyright holder recoups his investment. If they do, they need to seriously rename this '0day' shit.
firstly, no it wasn't unless I'm living in a fantasy land where I get a council tax bill every month. Renaming a tax isnt the same as scrapping it. Are you really pretending that people who pirate software are doing so to 'stick it to the man' rather than just so they can get shit for free? Is this high school teacher distributing $300 bits of software to everyone just doing it to undermine the system from within? Or is he just a script kiddie that never grew up?
Don't make me laugh, you are trying to upturn the entire 'pay to consume' business model i presume? Sounds like you would like the next hollywood blockbuster to have a $9.95 total budget, as after they sell 1 ticket, the rest is just artifiical scarcity right? Try thinking through the implications to changing the business model.
interesting idea. So is it just you and your friends who get to take the product for free under this system, whilst laughing at the poor schmucks who paid for it and made your actions possible? You seem to be arguing in favour of a change in copyright terms, or higher corporate taxes. But rather than lobby for change, you've decided just to take stuff without paying. Interesting.
Things have changed a lot in the last 5 years though. I was asking my brother (who is a foreign-travel junkie) what advice he had for going to south america (he was there recently), and his first advice was "make sure its obvious to everyone your not an american". That just didnt get said 5 years ago. Americans were seen as wealthy tourists. Now people are actively going out of their way to distance themselves from being american. The BBC even had an article recently about how americans living in the UK got fairly regular abuse and grief for being american, and we are probably one of the most pro-US nations out there.
both of them sound wrong to me. And what the fck was a teacher thinking handing out pirated software. Great life lesson there, especially as a warning for all the computer science students who will grow up to see their work copied and dished out for free.
I see, so as microsoft have made a lot of money, that means its ok to pirate their software? Google have made lots of cash too, is it ok if i use click fraud to screw up adwords? These people are obviously happy with their OS, as they want to stick with it, I dont understand why you think they shouldnt pay for a product they clearly use probably every day, or is this just normal slashdot microsoft bashing? What is it about products that can be encoded digitally that some people think that their creators dont need to eat?
You sound like a clever guy. I sympathise with your plight of having the skills but not the qualifications. I couldnt get a job as a coder on the basis that I had no CS degree and no 'commercial experience' despite having written several small apps quite easily, and sailing through all the 'aptitude tests' people would set. I had to get a bottom-rung IT support job, despite being a fluent C++ coder. Most employers have a brick wall when it comes to self-taught people, so why play them at their own game? Why not ramp-up your freelancing work and avoid the gruelling stagnation of a regular job altogether? I work for myself, make more than I did in my last 'real' job, and have total control and freedom. I wouldnt trade it in for a 9-5 slog for double the money.
what makes you so convinced that voting makes a difference? It's not unusual for the guy with most votes to lose an election, due to quirks in the system. 2,000 people who put the time in to be part of co-ordinated letter writing and phone-in campaigns probably wield more political power that twenty times as many voters*. Dont over-estimate the power of a cross on a ballot paper every five years. I vote, but I'm under no illusions about how trivial a difference it makes.
Talking of failure rates, Im astonished at how the energy saving bulbs last. i have *never* replaced one. They seem to go on forever. Im not sure how many years Ive had them, but thats pretty good going. As for the instant-on thing, I *like* the fact that I can turn a light on and not be suddenly blinded by it. I actually consider that a feature of them. With electricity prices skyrocketing in the UK, its not pennies, but pounds that these things save now.
dont forget the new video cards for your PC for the same money, and probably easily the horespower of the PS3. You probably already have a PC, and the games are cheaper. There are just too many reasons NOT to get a PS3.
actually the mac version for democracy got released yesterday. its at www.redmarblegames.com see, i even had to outsource it because of my stupidity in not using SDL:D
not everyone who is not tech savvy is an idiot. Don't fall into the trap of assuming stupidity because someone has a differing skillset. Im sure most car mechanics think I'm an idiot because I have sod all idea how my car works, or for that matter, how to keep the engine in top condition. Like most drivers, if it starts , stops and gets me to work, I'm fine.
You are so right, and if I was starting again now I would certainly use SDL, and may switch to it for my next project. It would save me a big royalty slice on the mac version of Democracy:D
The new round of consoles have great possibilities, athough theres always that barrier of some big licensing company to decide if your game is 'right' for their console. Thats the beauty of the PC. Can you imagine if only Sony made TVs, and decided what TV programs could be made?
Agreed 100%. I dont make 'casual' games like most of the causal market (they tend to be puzzle games) but I do aim squarely at people like yourself. I'm still doing 2D stuff, and happily using DirectX7. The beauty of it is that I dont care what vertex shader or pixel shader version your card has, I don't even care what version of DX you have, because unless your on windows 95 or ME, you'll have DX7 pre-installed. I see no real reason to even move to directx8 unless I did a flight sim or an FPS, the extra bells and whistles aren't neccesary for my genre. And why *anyone* would build a game engine around a dedicated physics card that 0.01% of the market has is totally beyond me. Still, I dont understand why Civ4 was so 3D. Was it to limit the number of people who could play? or just make it expensive to develop? I'm sure that the vast majority of games designers (as opposed to graphics programmers) would rather the pace of API and technology releases slowed dramatically. Then we could all concentrate on this legendery 'fun' thing, that used to be the whole point of these 'tech demos' that pass for modern agmes. Bah. Rant mode off...
agreed. I wish rather than posting articles on how the industry has no innovation, these same sites would instead feature smaller budget games that ARE innovative. I have two of them on my website they could start with right now.
but when the consumer makes a purchasing decision, where is the information? I got thinking about the power consumption of my home PC a while ago, but flicking through the ads in a PC magazine, the vast majority dont even mention the Power Consumption. The closest you get is battery life for laptops, but for desktop PCs its assumed power usage isnt a concern. With energy efficiency lightbulbs now using maybe 20W max, its insane for people not to push for just a 50-100W reduction in power sue for a home PC. Thats the equiv of turning off every light in the house.

your arguing with yourself here? I have no idea what your talking about. Do you even need me in this conversation?
ah youv'e become abusive, no need to debate further then.

*i extracted this figure from my backside.
The credit card processor Plimus went down too. No explanation from them, although they have been back up 16 hours now.

And while your at it, throw the incandescent bulb in the bin and replace it with a vastly more cost-effective energy efficient lightbulb.
Didn't I just DO this? --->

you should check out sites like www.gametunnel.com plenty of small indie games without whizz bang 3D, and with demos, that you might enjoy.
