I don't really understand what is the exact problem with GPL 3. If free software means one must be free to alter the software he runs, it was implied that one must be able to alter the software he runs and be able to test it. Unfortunately it was not directly said in GPL 2 and companies were using this fact as a tool to deny others to modify the code and use it. Now it will said in GPL 3.
I mean, it is like, you are free to say whatever you want but no voice should come out. Of course it should! That is what is meant with freedom!
And those who say it just brings out good code, well, for me, freedom is not about being good or bad, but being free. The whole GPL was based on the free-software philosophy. If you didn't like the philosophy, you didn't need to adhere to GPL in the first place. If you did, nothing is being changed!
Btw, nowadays(tm) even Linus is not adding much to the kernel but is more into maintaining it. And the real concern of Linus is that companies contributing to Kernel may panic and stop doing so. What is this RMS vs. Linus?
Actually, I've been thinking it might be sane to use ocean algae for biofuel production?
Some days ago there was a program on Discovery Channel which was discussing this exact thing. They dumped a lot of iron (salt) to a sea bed where there was no plantation at all. And after some months that area was 'blooming' with all the sea plantations and increased algae, more than they expected. The thing is, majority of the sea is barren because of lack of iron.
So I am quite convinced that work is going on in that direction too. Though it has its own problems of changing water currents, ocean geography, endangering species etc.
What's with not using the word torrent in the whole summary?
Here is the part of the article: "Applications lets you enable/disable the router's inbuilt applications - Download Master, Download Daemon, Download Share, Photo Album and Media Server, as well as do some basic configuration like specifying the port range and default seeding time for the BitTorrent client, and the default web server port. You can also configure the settings for an attached USB webcam, enabling to run via a web interface, and even turning it into a security camera controlled by the router, which can enable motion detection and email alerts. And finally, locally-attached USB printers can be configured and shared out - ready for connection from UPnP-enabled clients."
See, I paid a bit when I bought a CD and payed the tax. Then I lamely saw all your advertisements coming in my way. I also listened to you when your song was played before the one I really wanted to listen on radio and thought I am after all getting it for free. I know the CDs don't cost much, and copying on 'em is cheap enough that everyone is doing it. Why I think I should pay so much more than it costs and so many times?
Instead of blaming all the listeners that they should not copy, why don't you settle this issue with your label as to how _you_ want to get money, than having them to decide? If you think are getting ripped off in this whole business, you have to save yourself. Recording labels are not saving for you, they are saving for themselves. If you think this method is not working, try some other than bitching about how teenagers are ruthless and immoral.
Whats wrong with someone wanting to make a living doing something they enjoy?
Nothing. Any developed society has a responsibility to take care of its members and help them doing what they want until the society doesn't have to do something it doesn't want to. If majority wants to copy, they have no obligation to not to do so because you are wanting to make a living doing something you enjoy and not even being good at it.
I don't know of you, but Linux is very "Counter" productive to me. When I am in Windows I play Quake or CS, get a headache soon and then try to do my work; unlike when I am in Linux, I try to do my work and end-up reading Slashdot and editing Wikipedia.
This reminds me of the way many sacred Hindu holy scriptures kept in Somnath Temple were burnt and lost forever when Muslim warriors burnt the temple.
Somebody asked me once, why they were stored in a Temple and not shared with others?
I hope celebrity musicians start cherishing in art more than money.

That's exactly the problem I was stating: that the very nature of Internet is to be "open". To how many people you share your Home Address? (Hey! Getting a girls phone number is still a good thing:) )
Internet promotes the behavior of posting personal private things for public view. Blogs, videos, email address, opinions, log files, and what not; all represent the same problem, which is fundamental to its design.
Anyway, if that is how things are going to stay, I hope such matters will settle down (or the culture will mature up) as time passes by for the Web.
Now only if they don't replace this with Web 2.0 before getting mature!!!
As many of the users of Gmail, I have a "." in my email address. It is a feature of Gmail that while sending mail to me, you can just ignore the dot, or even misplace it. (see here)
Most of the spam I receive do not contain any dot. Which brings me to question, why is this a feature? My email id should unique and not ambiguous!
To me, this has one answer, it is a design flaw of current email system that your email address can be defined by one continuous stretch of words. If we would have more complicated email addresses, very much like our home address, then spammers would have tough time fighting with all the bouncing emails, given the infinitely large pool of possible address, and consequently we would have less emails. Actually, this would very much change the structure of Internet, which is currently modelled upon being "open".
If this mere structure would not have been the problem, may be every one was using encryption by now and there would be no emails anonymous in nature...
But may be w3 is too old to suggest fundamental changes!:)
I live in a room where I have a computer which is not connected to Internet, nor it is going to be.
When I got this room, first thing I did was to order Ubuntu and Kubuntu CDs. I installed both and finally I settled with Ubuntu (dual boot with previous installation of Windows(TM) ).
Now my girl friend is not familiar to Linux and its ever changing world, and wants to play songs. And I want to boot into beautiful looking Ubuntu! So I downloaded all the packages in my office, burned them on a multisession CD and brought them back to my offline computer to do apt-get.
To my surprise, still nothing would run except some rare MPEG files. And the reason is that all the downloaded.deb files listed on Ubuntu page are dependent on so many.so files that I lost my enthusiasm to boot in linux.
Now, I think I will give a try to Freespire. What do you people suggest? My machine is too old to go through Gentoo, which would be still better!
The site's slogan is "News for nerds. Stuff that matters." Slashdot is often criticized for intentionally posting story summaries that many find inaccurate, highly biased, and/or inflammatory and that incite heated posting, while ignoring news or commentary on issues which outsiders may consider more serious or important (see Slashdot subculture) - this is mostly acknowledged, and frequently even celebrated by the community itself.
Well, with the same argument, Microsoft is entitled to "treasure" patents of any software code they wrote, and that there shouldn't be any topic on/. about them.
The point is, Google is not a garage workshop. They have larger impact! We are already coping with the ill impact of decisions of big companies like Microsoft and Sun.
Internet is not a property, now. It is like another way to communicate. And that communication needs to be unbiased.
... people who have their Windows Update set to automatically download the latest critical patches (through the Windows Security Center - insert oxymoron comment here) will not be affected at this time. If you manually go to Windows Update you will need to provide some sort of credentials...
Really? I am in a University which disallows automatic updates (using some proxy).
(and not every student OWNS a legitimate copy!)

For me, I do love my computer;). And I also like to use only one computer in my institute. But that is only because I have my BIG profile saved on that computer.
Given a choice to select my computer and someone else's computer, both totally in same condition, I would prefer mine. But that is not something specific to computers! I will always prefer something I have worked with(on).

let it be known that SP2 is only downloaded it is not installed.
Does that mean it will be downloaded (and redownloaded) for all the users?
Or it will start downloading only for someone with administrator priviledges?
