Fantastic....
Now all the 30-40'year old life-long nerds will come out of the woodwork, realizing that those stupid games represented the best thing that ever happened to them, since shortly after that, they started smoking weed, and ended up in mediocre jobs with ugly wives, looking fat and bald, and that IT DIDN'T FUCKING HAPPEN FOR YOU BUDDY, and ITS ALL YOUR FAULT. Now its time for you all to talk about who'se more old school. God I feel sorry for your children who get to try to look up to a bunch of has beens who are stuck in a 30 year old reality.
struggling local people? AHAHAHAHAHAHAH
AHAHAHAHAH
AHAHAHAHAH
Okay, I was making $550-900 a week from craigslist advertising alone, working 15-20 hours a week. I had 5-6 small companies as clients, and I never charged more than $45/hour. Struggling!? Are you kidding me? I was 22 years old, (last year), and I was partying every day, and paying all my own bills....and sleeping late every day...
This is why we'll always be in business. I work for Computer Geeks, the largest on-site company in Boston. We're growing. Like Crazy. Thanks to Dell, Hp, Acer, etc...because people will spend 2 hours with dell, 1 hour with microsoft, 1 hour with comcast, and then give up, open the yellow book and pony up the $250 bucks or so for us to come out to their homes...jump up and down for them, unscrew the problem, and play therapist for 2 and a half hours.
Watch the Amadala-shower-cam: $20 bucks
Watch the guy watching the shower-cam: $80 bucks
Watch the guy watching the guy watching the shower cam: $200 bucks.
I have an idea. Let's assume:
1. that in fact if we make it to 'post-human' that we'll be running simulations
2. that we'll have the capacity to run these simulations full blown.
wouldn't it follow that eventually the little people in the simulations in their little universes would attempt to create a simulation themselves......?
to conclude......to PROVE conclusively once and for all, whether we do or do not live in a simulation...is to get to post-human ourselves, and start doing simulations ourselves......because god DAMN IT, our creators will run out of RAM before we do...cuz they're running OUR systems AND everyone else's:D.
If the universe BSOD's....then we know we're a simulation...
What's another disturbing conclusion I think, is that the whole thing BSOD's...as soon as the simulation inside the simulation inside the simulation (You get the idea) runs its first simulation...cuz the UPPER layers get hit the hardest with the processing power requirements....so technically, we should keep designing simulations that run smaller simulatinos themselves, and depending on how far down WE are, the the universe will go bonkers faster......if we're pretty high up, or the HIGHEST up (highly unlikely eh:)) we'll haveto wait many many years before we can design an adequate simulation that will crash itself due to too many processing cycles.....
Oh gawd, now the ricers will learn how to code in assembly because it will be considered 'cool' to do that to the cars and manipulate the fuel injector settings. Now how will the geeks differentiate themselves from the ricers......the standard boundaries will be broken!!! Soon we will have nothing left to get women with.
Yeah well, How bout we start with animal testing for dna-based computers, and maybe upgrade gerbils to do LAME-MP3 encoding by plugging wires into their ass and mouth?
If you had a calculator that was hard-wired even peripherally to your brain, it would be of great help. The human brain isn't designed to execute lots of instructions sequentially, that are required for computation, but is designed to execute many instructions in parallel based on the connectionist model. Having an on-board calculator for humans, would be equivelant to a pentuim processor all of a sudden acquiring a semantic dictionary, and a 'relevance' database, so it could quickly discount irrelevant stimuli.
P.S. in case that doesn't seem like a big deal, context and relevance are some of the biggest reasons why facial recognition fails quite often, and some of the greatest challenges in AI.
By the time we have 6.4 Terabit DRAM, windows will require at least 12.8 Terabit DRAM....and maybe a Pentahertz processor with quad-pumped co-processor, for.1 second/movie fast divx 12.0 encoding.
And wouldn't it be cool to grow your own computer, with like a little DNA home growing kit? You could buy government-approved DNA and grow it into like a custom computer, or a pet...whatever makes you a more 'stable' person.
I think, reading this thread, it seems that people are using it to victimize themselves. Its been 4 years since high school for me, and i'm not going to tell a success story worthy of springer, but I can tell you, i've stopped holding grudges, and I think some people on this thread havent. That's what college is supposed to be, people, a time to expand your abilities, not hide out and write shell code for linux. You can do that when you're 40. What you CAN"T do when you're 40 is be viewed as a potential sex partner but a ditzy blonde with a push up bra. So go to the gym, roll up your sleeves, and say stupid things that make people laugh. Then go home and write code. Or only spend your time doing one thing, and judge people by how they perform on the one thing that you actually excel at, because that's what it seems alot of people are doing lately.
