  1. I dunno, if I was in a study, and the robot started begging me not to turn it off, I'd be more surprised by the device being capable of begging. I'd either assume it was still a test, or be completely shocked by it being able to do this---the implication for a "helper" robot suddenly understanding the concepts of life and death.

    What is sad is that you really, truly , believe that.
    I've personally got an ex friend who officially cut off our friendship because I didn't complain loudly enough about Charlottesville. I was actually called a NAZI for that: for not filling up my posts with anger about that when it occurred. As she's from Berkeley, I'm guessing she leans a bit to the left.
    Yeah, I know, she doesn't count...

    Maxine Waters isn't an extremist. She's just a used up politician in a neighborhood she has done nothing to improve in the time she's been in office. She's simply ineffective and useless. I believe she probably suffers from some sort of dementia at this point.

    Generally, in a discussion involving a logged in user versus an AC, the logged in user has much higher credibility.

    Argh! Shoehorning all the political currents that existed in Civil War era United states into either a "democrat versus replublican" or "conservative vs. liberal" label is just absurd. To use a car analogy, It's like saying the only cars available are Sedans or SUVs.

    I'll make you a deal. We take all the "corrupt cops or Republicans who run insurance companies, telephone companies, or branded hotels" and place them in a lock-down facility.
    If the crime rate decreases significantly during that period, you win and we keep them there.
    If it doesn't, we shoot you in the head and exterminate your entire family, to ensure your gene pool doesn't continue.

    Seems a good bet if you're reasonably sure. Deal?

    They also age badly. After a short time, the paper straw soaks through and becomes useless.

    The poor in my neighborhood are the PRIME users of bottled/ filtered/ water dispensed out of water business vending machines.
    I see lines of them waiting to fill their sparkletts bottles.
    They get the same city water I do, a few blocks away, in similarly aged buildings.

    Why is that? I eventually decided it was because being poor sucked, and that splurge on bottled water made them feel good and proactive. Like getting a sugary water drink probably does.

    MacDonalds: Hey! We've found a replacement for our plastic straws! they're just as good as the plastic straws and biodegradable.
    Reality: new straw is crappy, doesn't work well, and stops functioning after ten minutes.

    Moral: never trust any product being sold on it's moral value. It doesn't have to hold up in quality, it just has to make people think they're saving the planet/eliminating hunger/ bettering humanity.

    All those, except Trump, were completely believable then. 2001 was a crucial year in my life, and I remember a lot about it. There was a belief that everyone would have great cell phones: Hell, I had a japanese one with a built in dictionary at the time that was way better than US available ones.
    China's pace was obvious.
    Electric cars would eventually arrive, and their equivalent. It was just a matter of when.

    nah. They're homeless because houses cost too much, they're crazy, they're addicts, or they're just lazy. Or a combination of any of them. I've met people fitting into all these categories. Determining the percentage of each group is the tricky question.
