  1. Use of "Hacker" on Amazon Hacks For Fun and Money · · Score: 1, Offtopic

Nice to see the word "Hacker" used properly, to mean someone pushing the limits of X tech, as opposed to the usual "Hacker = Criminal".

For many years I've seen the negative responses, as a self-confessed computer hacker. Its only in the past few years I've noticed more recognition of the true meaning of hacker from people.

  3. Logan's Run sales up in Redmond on Looking at Longhorn · · Score: 1
However, there are some interesting hints at what's to come. Here's what I've found out so far: The My Contacts Library features a new Explorer view style called Carousel. Now, there is no way to actually view, add or modify Contacts in Longhorn yet (though I'll get to how that will eventually work in a bit), but I have seen Carousel view, so I can at least describe how it works.
Graphically, an icon representing your user sits at the center of the carousel, and lines, or spokes, branch out from the center towards your contacts. In Carousel view, items can be grouped by various criteria, such as relationships. In the relationships concept, you might have people sorted by family, friends, work, and the like. So you'd see lines radiating out from your icon toward these groups. Items that are logically further away from you (alphabetically, those items that are further from the letter A) will graphically fade as they move further from the center of the carousel (you). Here's a rough mock-up of how this feature might eventually look.
Just what we need, the Carousel method of contact management becoming the M$ defacto standard. Next step is population control... Carousel, carousel, carousel!

  4. Ultima Online - Chesapeake on Genderplay in Videogames · · Score: 5, Interesting

After spending more time in UO than anyone should, over 5 years and 10+ accounts, I've done everything from Player Killing, House Decays and Sales to being Mayor of Oberon Pass a small player run town from way back when. And so I shall dispense words from on high as to how gender works in UO.

Only idiots allow the fact that an avatar is female to sway their behavior. With a signal to noise ratio inherent in a MMORPG, there are alot of idiots doing it and I've had idiots act differently towards my female chars. You can actually bring in quite a bit of loot bank crawling with a female in distress, I've known many who've gotten away with outright scams this way.

Everyone else pretty much ignores female/male, since they know it doesn't matter what the avatar looks like it's the personality and skills behind it. This is probably most of the UO population, especially since there is very little "suspension of disbelief" or "game immersion" when playing within UO except on certain rare occasions.

The Role Players are a subset of the above, they however make a point to play RP in appropriate situations to the gender of the avatar. So even though they may be acting like their judgement or actions is swayed by gender, in reality they are going to roleplay such events as they see fit, and not be coerced into giving away valuable items as the idiots are likely to do.

  5. Build a hard drive wind chime... on Slashback: Folding, Cursing, Exporting · · Score: 5, Interesting

Since the days of the death of MFM hard drives I've been stripping dead drives of their platters and using them for wind chimes. The platters resonate with crystal clear tones when struck against each other, and I've never had one I couldn't use from notebook drives to IDE/SCSI drives.

Besides the usual nylon line and a wooden dowel or two for the upper support, you do need a few different type of screwdriver bits, since most drives use odd shaped star/torx screwheads. If you have any trouble just grab a drill and destroy the screws, at this stage who cares about what the case ends up looking like. And a final tip, you may want to spray the platters with a thin clear coat if your putting them outside.

  6. Combine with EMule and Overnet Instead on Gnutella2 Specifications · · Score: 5, Interesting

While refining the original protocol is all well and good, why not look towards intergration with other open networks now?

I've used em all, as they say, and while no one client is best for all applications I'd say the Emule development is damn close. Since it's Open Source and there are several main "production" versions from different groups plus individual modders putting out even more versions on the cutting edge of development. The best code gets quickly integrated all the way from the edge to the trunk, I've had my eye on their mod forums as well as the latest emule 27a thru 27c releases and things are really moving towards another great milestone release.

With the integration of Overnet support into EMule it now has the best of both worlds, with both public servers and client to client directories. Plus with weblink sites making it easy to find and add known good files to your queue, by batches if needed, it gives the end user the complete experiance of a mature tech.

At least Gnutella is open and may actually end up moving in this direction, I'm disappointed in hearing that the upcomming WinMX will still be closed, both their client and their network really have some good features but in the P2P world closed is death IMHO. As for me, I'll be waiting for the latest 27c EMule as modded by Sivka, my personal favorite at this time.

  7. Sneakemail.com - Disposable addresses! on Building A Better Inbox (Updated) · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've been using Sneakemail for awhile, it allows for totally disposable addresses with FULL accountability for each sender.

For example, say a spammer grabs my address from here despite the /. filtering (which every site should have). Every email forwarded from sneakemail shows which specific one-time address it was sent to on the subject line. And since sneakemail allows you to filter each individual address seperately by every sender that's ever mailed that address if nessesary, I can easily turn off the spam while not having to truely discard an address. Plus it's great to know exactly where your address was harvested from, in fact one I've gotted alot of spam from was a one-time address I used for a techdirt.com spam article reply I made!

Did I mention it's a quick bookmark popup thats easy to use and free (banner supported) or cheap premium (6 months $12US).

This is of course only part of the solution, for the rest I use Mailwasher.

All companies should make reading the Hacker FAQ mandatory for all employees. Even IBM uses the Hacker FAQ!

    My personal favorite:
0.2: How should I manage my hacker?
The same way you herd cats. It can be a bit confusing; they're not like most other workers. Don't worry! Your hacker is likely to be willing to suggest answers to problems, if asked. Most hackers are nearly self-managing.
