Largest voting segment in the US are the seniors and most of them don't give a damn about open source software or software patents. Why do you think that two magic words that constantly come up during the election year are Social Security and Medicare?

My suggestion is that you volunteer. Most state and local government level politicians have limited budget for staff and are always on the lookout for volunteers. I volunteered for a state representative during my college years as the IT advisor. At first, I mainly did it to have something to put on my resume. However, I ended up contributing and learning much more than I expected. At first I expected that only things that I'll end up doing would be creating and maintaining a website and trouble shoot office computers. However, he asked for advices related to IT issues affecting the state ( I guess better me giving advice that having him get it from a MS rep) and also took me to IT related conferences and showed me how the political process works in person.

And unlike the common notion among the slashdotters, politicians actually do actually care about what the constituents think and large volume of calls and letters (form E-mails are not as effective) have persuaded politicians to change his/her mind many times in the past. While big businesses may make big donations, it's the constituents who are the ones casting votes. For example, I sent a letter to my congressman about an issue that I supported and I got a customized reply back, unlike what parent poster mentioned about the letters to the congressman. It turns out that he also supported that issue and also earned a loyal voter.

So to the geeks out there, go out and volunteer. You'll not only make differences to the other geeks out there, but you'll also expend your mind beyond CS. And call your politicians and write personalized letters. Thousands of calls and letters are more effective than a couple of letters to the editor and if your politicians really don't give a damn about what you think, take a hint and vote for someone else.

Third, if you still believe that officers are 100% not liable for the act of the corporation, form a one person corporation (yes, it's legal), and start defrauding consumers using that corporation (for example, setup fake eBay autions as the business). While I'm a geek by trade, I've started to learn about personal finance by reading books, taking classes, and visiting other website than Slashdot, Newsforge, Linux.com, groklaw, etc. Why? Because I don't want anyone else to go through what I went through because it does royally (no pun intended) suck to be in poverty.

So go ahead and spread your garbage about how there's no hope and everyone should just give up (and last time I checked Canada isn't a third world country). So who ever's reading this, you have two chocies. You can either give up and whine or EDUCATE yourself. BS, I used to think the exact same way. I've told myself "I'll save whatever's left over from my paycheck for an emergency fund". Sure enough, I always ended up not saving because there never were any money leftover.

I finally got sick and tired of living paycheck to paycheck and started checking out personal finance websites, such as The Motley Fool. I got myself a free 30-day membership and visited forums to learn about living below your means, cutting credit card interest rates and playing their "balance transfer games", and the "paying yourself first" method. With the lowered expenses, I put away at least $100 a month toward savings and investments. I treat that $100 or more as a bill that I must pay (thus "paying your self first") before any other bills. Otherwise I'll found a way to spend that money.

I have saving and non-retirement investments of $1200 right now. That's not that much but that's way better than being broke. It took me about 6 months to save up that much, and I estimate that I'll need $6000 for the 3 months worth, so at this rate, I'll need about 2 more years (yes, I wish that I started sooner).
