I don't believe that freeloading is the reason why Mandrake is going down the toilet. Otherwise, Red Hat would be right behind them!
It's all about the marketing. Otherwise, no one would buy M$ Crapdows or pay more for Pentiums! Let's say that there's a CIO for a large corp that knows nothing about Linux or BSD. He may not know/care about Madrake, *BSD, Red Hat, BUT Red Hat + IBM and Red Hat + Oracle may get his/her attention.
Mandrake disallowing free downloads will only hurt it in the long run.

For me, playing RPGs (one of them being Pool of Radiance for NES) got me started on AD&D back in high school. I didn't stick with the paper and dice AD&D due to my hectic schedule. That's why I really got into AD&D RPGs for PC since I can save the game in progress and pick it up later when I end up with some free time.
1. Patent all software concepts and make them public domain.
2. Create Linux. And since my last name is Lim, call it Limux.
3. Buy properties and sell them duringthe economic boom.
3. Create SlashDot, hire CowboyNeal, and remind him to do a post on "Giving advice to your 12 year old self" on February 21, 2003.
You can't really blame Gnome for trying to win over Windows users. Most end users don't bother changing their settings, and that's why I often see their default page on IE is set to MSN. Microsoft knows this and thus use it to generate hits on thier MSN site.
I'd suggest a compromise. An novice settings which uses settings similar to MS Windows, and an expert setting that will allow an expert users to twick the settings till the cows come home (kinda like the ICQ menu option).
Gun don't kill people, planes (9/11), fertilizers (Oklahoma City Bombing), cars (DUI and wife running down her cheating husband, etc), flammable liquids (120 deaths in Korean subway), and TVs (TV intoxication defense) do.
I drive to work everyday and share the road with people who drive while drunk, talking on the cell phone, racing, cutting other people off, trying to merge into the highway while doing 35MPH (mostly older folks), throwing objects, committing hit and run, not yielding to emergency vehicles, and/or putting on the makeup. Last thing on my mind is worrying about getting shot.
I posted this comment as a reply to warn users about the parent post (which since has been removed) and I get modded down. What a deal!

I guess you never tried M$ release candidates.
I found the link of Sarah all tied up. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/kozer1.html
I use M$ Windows time to time, too!
I'm not falling for that again.
I don't know why but images of Sarah Kozer from "Joe Millionaire" comes to my mind...

That would explain why I wear thick glasses.

All schools I've been to have some sort of "Computer use" or "Technology" fees. And of it's a public school, the rest are funded by the tax payers.
Rats, I don't think that my erased porn collection is worth $500...
