Countries across the world dislike the United States. We have no morals, crime runs rampant, etc, etc. It's because we have free speech of course. Countries like china filter the internet to prevent free speech, thus preventing the evil. Apparently now, the new york times also agrees that free speech only breeds evil. Only when everyone's thoughts can be controlled, and made to conform to what the people in charge think is the "right way" will evil cease to exist.
I dunno what it is, but I think this article has really helped me see the light. I am jsut now finishing up my junior year at NCSU, and I have gotten literaly NO WHERE. While I have done well in the programming classes, I have failed almost every math course I've taken at least once. My GPA is about a 2.0, and I haven't matriculated, and it looks like I won't ever be able to. I have registered for summer and fall classes, and was planning to give it "one more year" just to see how things go. But I just realised after reading this, theres no point in it for me. I should just get out NOW. I think I should either go take some CS courses at a community college, or try and figure out what courses I need to take to get into video editing/post-production. I do a lot of work with video as a hobby, so I would probably get some enjoyment out of a job doing that.
I have always preferred Windows as my OS. Linux just sorta sucks in my opinion, from what I've seen of it at least. But by the time this thing rolls out, between the high system requirements and the DRM, and the countless other annoyances it has, I think that is going to be a good time for me to switch over. I'm sure Linux could be in a much better state by that time, at the rate its I'm proving. Maybe a 4ghz machine will be standard computing power by the time longhorn comes out... but I sure as hell don't want my operating system sucking down my system down, i want my PROGRAMS to use the power of that system.
I remember when I was a kid, I would read the gaming magazines and stuff, this was back in the days of the 16-bit era and all. Well I remember I would occasionally hear talk of these devices that could copy games and stuff, and the game companies and the magazines would always say that this sort of piracy causes the games to cost so much. Well fast forward a decade. Now the cd and dvd based systems are easier and FAR more widely pirated than anything back then, and yet games are cheaper and the industry rakes in way more money than they used to. One thing I like to point out to further drive this home is the Nintendo Gamecube. For quite a while, it was impossible to pirate games for it, and it is still very difficult to the point that its not really worth it. Yet gamecube games cost more or the same as the widely pirated PS2 games.
Theres another open source codec already in existence that uses wavelets, Rududu.
Why couldn't they have worked along with this project? It looks quite promising.
Heh, I meant to reply to the dude a couple posts up. Havent gotten this whole slashdot thing figured out yet. Most of the interesting topics are allready filled with redundant posts by the time I get to them, so I never bother to say anything./made like 5 posts since I've been reading this site like 2 years ago.
Americans want gritty, realistic stuff.
Japanese want weird stuff, cute stuff, and 8-year-old girls getting raped by tentacles. I mean hell... would YOU want something like Enter the Matrix when you could be watching a little girl have simulated sex?
I don't see what everyone is getting so pissy about, it seems pretty cool to me. I mean, so what if he wants to go search for Noah's ark? He is free to do that if he wishes to. If he does find what happens to be a large boat, that doesn't prove anything about God or the universe, but I think it would be an important historical discovery. It could give clues as to whether something like a flood did occur in that area, and when.
I dunno, it just seems to me that this could be a great scientific/historical discovery if anything is found, but everyone just seems to be spouting out things like "Arrr, them chistians is at it again!" Get a grip guys.
So this is basically just going to be Windows XP, with the new service pack? Sounds to me like its just a way that they can push back the release of Longhorn and save a bit of face.

Wow Ermac, that new video looks absolutely GORGEOUS. I want this sooooo bad. But I've already bought the whole series two damn times (on vhs, later on dvd, plus the directors cut disc) I don't know If I can really justify putting this much money into it yet again...

Actually, I'm an idiot. This is not open source.
