she pointed out to all the porn, violence, drug use and other negative aspects of life that Americans could see on TV and everywhere else
I hope you did point out to her that she has never heard of all the porn, violence and drugs in China only because Chinese goverment won't let TV, the press or anyone else to say a word about it.
Go with Server and Client releases. Server would be updated less frequently, trying to go in sync with major server software releases (Apache, PostgreSQL, etc.). Client version could be released more often... and it should probably be sub-forked further into Gnome/D and KDE/D projects releasing themselves in sync with Gnome and KDE releases.
Just a subset of.NET is ECMA/ISO standard. Mono is trying to implement everything.
Mono should fork itself into GNOME.NET and WINE.NET. So that only those interested in playing with MS patent fire would install the latter. This is important considering growing MS' thirst for patents and inevitability of Mono's attempt to clone Avalon/Indigo.
Also, consider that neither ECMA nor ISO seem to be guarantees of OSS-friendliness. Google for quotes like "The role of a standards body in this context is to warrant that licensing is possible on RAND (reasonable and non-discriminatory) conditions" about ECMA or "The ISO standards body will take the unprecedented step of withdrawing the JPEG image format as a formal standard if Forgent Networks, a small Texan company, continues to demand royalties on a seventeen-year old patent."
Let me offer you a bit of Eastern Eeuropean perspective.
Then Bush came and said that Iraq needed this invasion and that iraqis would welcome Americans.
They did. They do. There is no chance that the majority of Iraqis won't welcome Saddam's demise because he was supporting the minority (Sunnis) all the while torturing/killing off the opposition.
Of course they are pissed off about US failure to stop robberies and incursion of crazy Taliban/Al Qaeda remnants. But that's a minor piont.
even in the countries of "the coalition", most people were against the war
Which countries? In EE most people supported the idea to squash Saddam, because they've been living under totalitarianism themselves for almost half a century (which is way more serious than those few years the French were stuck with Hitler) and still have pretty fresh memories of that period. BTW Blair suggested to take that EE experience seriously while all Chirac was able to say was: "they've missed a perfect opportunity to keep their mouths shut"... which is a clear indication that history books printed inside France are in the need for renewal.
As for Germans... i'd say they've lost a perfect opportunity to fight against the hitler of Mid-East.
War is fucking bad, it should always be avoided at all costs... war is never necessary, unless if for self-defense when someone attacks you
So ivading France to rescue it from oppression (as opposed to "only for self-defence") is OK, but invading Iraq to rescue it from oppression is a bad idea? What kind of logic is that?
This "pre emptive war" thing is the biggest amount of crap I have ever seen.
If only someone was smart enough to squash Hitler as soon as he came to power...
I'd say the world needs a new doctrine: as soon as someone reaches a status of a dictator somewhere he gets squashed immediatelly. I suppose democracy would be at no risk world-wide then.
Oh, and yes, diplomacy WAS possible with Saddam.
Oh yes, the French are used to craft deals with totalitarian bastards. Like the one signed with Hitler in 1938 (on Czechoslovakia) or all those little lucrative agreements with Saddam...
Oh, and about the "freedom fries" act... I would say I feel very happythat my country is associated to the word Freedom because yes, that'swhat we stand for.
WTF? You're against Operation Iraqi Freedom because you are for Freedom? I guess "French logic" is a phrase i'm looking for.
Let's talk about that software that you've "bought". You might find a reminder like this in your EULA: "Software is licensed. Not sold.". And that's the point. If all you've paid MS for Windows is a few hundred bucks, you don't own it. To own it you'd have to offer a few hundred billion bucks, i'm afraid.
By default, copyright holder has "all rights reserved". Later that owner might give some of those rights to you. What you get when you buy a chunk of plastic called DVD from Disney is a right to take a look (maybe just a limited amount of times) at the contents of it. That's all. And this sad fact of reality will not change until Disney's copyright expires. To get the privilege you pay in bucks (and maybe megabytes of the encrypted area on your HDD). In no way you become an "owner" of those bytes. You own the data you create. They own the data they create. Your data is under NTFS encryption. Their data is under DRM encryption. You won't tell them your password, they won't tell you theirs. Pretty fair, i'd say.
PageRank has no agenda. As a consequence the best pages of both position and opposition on any issue crawl to the top in search results. And if you have a nerve to read them both you have a chance to form a balanced, objective picture in your mind.
Now compare this with just one Wikipedia page on a subject where two confliclting sides are busy overriding each others writings untill the most tireless "wins" the battle...
Anyway, dismissing PageRank you shall point out a better alternative. I can't wait to hear about it.
Isn't Wikipedia just a subset of THE encyclopedia (the internet)?
Google's pagerank still rules the day. If Wikipedia's article on some subject is indeed the best web-wide it will be pulled to the top in search results. But that rarely happens in my experience.
So what the fuss is all about?
P.S. I wish i could exclude Wikipedia-related articles via/. preferences.
Q: then why not call it DCM!? A: it would hide the fact that this is used for purposes other than copyright!:-)
Anyway, cool down a bit. I'm not disputing your Call it digital restrictions management. I'm disputing your NOT digital rights management. Why? Because both of the interpretations ("rights" and "restrictions") are correct. That's all.
In other words: when was the last time you've been insisnting that "file access permissions" must be called "file access restrictions", because they allow admins to heinously restrict access to files?:-)
What good thing has happend as a result of software patents?
Who would invest millions if not billions for years and decades into research of things like advanced audio/video compression, speech synthesis/recognition, artificial vision, handwriting recognition, etc without patent protection?
As we are finishing with implementation of trivial ideas and focusing more and more on advanced research an argument for software patents will only get stronger.
If it's "sharing" rather than "theft" on kazaa, then it's "identity sharing" rather than "identity theft" as well...
Looks like a chance for KOffice.
Considering that Qt is about to be GPLed for Windows...
I take the view that if a song, movie, book, etc. is DRM'd then it isn't truly mine.
It's not yours either way. It's copyright holder's.
If you want it to be yours with all the nice consequences, propose to purchase copyright. Just don't expect that to be cheap.
DISCLAIMER: I'm not using OOo much and have not stumbled upon this personally, so consider it a rumor:
One post on a local mailing list said that a document writen as MS Word doc might crash Word XP on attempt to open it...
Given that most of the humanity are using Windows - Kubuntu is more user-friendly. Period.

Mono provides choice for those that are currently developing for the Windows platform. So does Java. Mono is FOSS. Is Java?
Sun has IP agreement with MS. Has Mono?
You can feel relatively safe about Linux because of IBM's patent stockpile. Has IBM embraced Mono too? Or was it Java?
From what I understand, .NET is an ECMA standard
Just a subset of .NET is ECMA/ISO standard. Mono is trying to implement everything.

How dare you call it "theft"? One of you even cracked up a phrase "data theft".
/., last time i checked, these were to be called "copies" because the original is still left intact.
:-)
On
They're sharing, not stealing, your IDs
I wonder how Java's apt will mesh with Debian's one.

Ever heard of copyright?
WEP can be sWEPt away in a second.
Picking "umount" over "unmount"?..
"Slashdot"?
Recursive acronyms?!
all they have to do is get my wallet
As if 90% of users do not keep notes with their passwords in their wallets.
Notice that pulling out passwords out of cards is a bit more difficult than taking a look to the said notes.
As in this case, where the "liberation" angle is emergency spin to cover the lack of WMD in Iraq.
What about "Operation Iraqi Freedom"?
If Java infringes those patents then, i guess, Mono does too. Both MS and Sun have no problems with Kodak anymore. What about Novell?
I've read somewhere that Kodak's patents predate even thought-to-be-prior-art CORBA... seems like Gnome is in a serious trouble.
What advantages Hibernate offers over ibatis sql maps?
I hope thats a mistake, because i'm loking forward to see a prequel.
And i hope the movie will leverage Star Wars Kid documentaries.
