    Scanning didn't create a derivative work. Scanning added no actual content. Plus, as legal filings they're arguably public domain in the first place in which case they'd still be public domain after scanning.

    I wonder if this is true. If you remaster a film in the public domain to DVD or something you do get copyright protection on the digital work.

    You are kidding right? Admin-all-the-time is the biggest security complaint for MS OS'es. Escalating to admin to install software is a very basic security precaution that has been widely implemented for the last 30 years.

    Part of the problem with "free" stuff that is truly free is that people don't know about it, assume by default it must be crap,

    Unfortunately the vast majority IS crap (although this could be said of professional music as well though possibly to a lesser extent).

    Popularity metrics are one way to try and combat this. It also helps to have an active community or a webmaster who will try and do a bit of filtering.

    I allow anybody to submit to my project but also spend a lot of time scouring the net looking for content that doesn't suck. I think I have put up some pretty good stuff lately and there is more to come.

    Guilt Free P2P - Free Legal Downloads Just in case you have sigs turned off...

    Having a look at some fiqures here, The average wage in the USA is around $36,764 the Uk has an average salary of £22,411 which is around $41,958.91 The same for germany and france roughly ... so i dont know where your pulling these GDP fiqures from .

    People should take GDP figures older than 6 months or so with a grain of salt. The US dollar has pretty seriously weakened in the last few months (almost 50% in some cases).

    I think it was a reference to the Bill Nye story posted earlier. Poor taste, maybe, but will everybody stop being offended all PC like?

    Evangelical thought are not trying to remove evolution, they would just like the teaching of evolution to acknowledge that it is not a proven fact, and that there are other schools of thought, an in particular, the possibility of intelligent design.

    Any science class worth a damn should teach about the scientific method. This is the forum in which to discuss the distinctions between theory and fact. Forcing teachers to make an exception for this particular theory and specifically mention it seems terribly disingenious to me.

    I buy off iTunes, then I burn to a CD. That's right a CD. A hard copy. It's like making a backup.

    But you know what I do after I burn my CD, I re-rip to iTunes as an mp3. Circumventing DRM? No, I'm ripping my CD.


    Yes, actually, you are circumventing the DRM, which is against the TOS. Apple is turning a blind eye now, but will they continue to do so?

    I'm just saying, everyone bitches that they embrace an "obsolete business model." So they test the waters with a new one, and people just crack it.

    DRM will always be cracked, the sooner people realize this the better.

    Complaining that hacking hurts the entertainment industry is like complaining that gravity hurts the airline industry.

    Hmm, I wonder if COM will still work in Longhorn. I use it a LOT to automate Word and Excel via Python. I would hate to have to redo all that work if we ever upgrade.

    don't know how many times I've read this statement from other people - "I like Firefox/Mozilla, but it doesn't render my bank/news/etc site correctly so I have to use IE." Or "I would use another browser but I support IE at work." A lot of people are stuck with IE because of its poor interoperability.

    Hopefully this will backfire on MS. Now people will be saying I would like to just use the browser on my computer but it doesn't render whatever site using CSS properly. CSS is here to stay whether MS wants it to be or not.

    And finally, hydro power is not clean! Several studies have shown that the average hydro plant produces more environmental destruction and greenhouse gasses than a similar (in power production) coal plant.

    Except that when burning fossil fuels it is releasing carbon that has been buried in the ground for millenia whereas rotting plants are releasing carbon that was already up here.

    So your "clean" energy source is worse for the environment than a filth-belching coal plant. Congratulations.

    Except without the radiation and other fun stuff in coal smoke

    Of course, hydro needs to be planned to minimize impact like everything else.

I don't really care where your moral compass points in regard to IP law and whatnot but for fuck sake stop actively helping them! You are as much a part of the problem as the people who support and run these cartels.
