hooked up by your friend who knows their way around Linux...
That is the fatal flaw in your silly plan and illustrates how out of touch you are with the market. I have worked in tech for years and I know no one who can setup or runs linux on the desktop. I'm the only person who might even consider doing it among these dozens of people. If it was so frigging easy for 'maintenance' you wouldn't need some smelly hobbit to come over and install it for you in the first place.
Why would you want to copy them BACK to your computer?
I actually can do this with my DRM/PFS device, so I'm not sure what player you had an issue with. I think the Ipod might limit this, but I think there are tools out there that allow it.
No players force you to DRM. You can go and steal/troll/ anything and put in your whatever player. The DRM is an ability to give you access to legal, for sale music - not a limit on you. Personally, I intentionally got a play-for-sure device so I could use Napster (and then I switched to Yahoo).
I pay Yahoo $5 a month to 'store' my terabyte of music so I can access it home or at the office, and they also gave me 1 million songs with nearly all new releases each week - since I only care to listen at work, home, or on my Pocket DJ that also can play in my car.
The engine is buggie, and I still have to use WMP to get it to work well with my DJ, but it is still in beta.
Then they better get the movie made quickly, because Halo 3 is due to come out at the same time as the PS3, which is next spring.
Finally, it's nice to see it the other way around for once. Years and years of crappy video games to meet movie opening deadlines - and now the movie must meet the VG deadline.
It's always wise to begin the negotiations by asking for too much that the other side can back away from than risk asking for too little. This was one of the more worthwhile lessons from one of the tasks in the Apprentice Season 3.
This movie is by no means a guaruanteed success. Let's take a look at the last few video game movies (Ignoring Pokemon):
Ok, I'm sure I missed. But the one that Halo most resembles in terms of popularity and a big budget is Final Fantasy. I really enjoyed that film, and I'm unsure why it did so poorly. But from MS's point of view, they have nothing at risk financially (maybe a lousy movie - and that didn't hurt the popularity of Mario's games). Expect to see trailers for Halo3 at the start of the HAlo Movie.
Actually, it does cache levels. And if you think it seems to take forever, you should get a PS2 and see what a real wait is.
It also allows you to store copious amounts of data from games - like your garage in Forza - or free downloads (maps, cars, mechs, etc.) - OR upgrades to Live.
I don't think your going to be BUYING any games for download other than small stuff. MS's relationship with retailers will still have you going to the store to buy the disks.
Listen you tool, no one corrected me. Nerds are so... hard... to... talk....to.
Saying the games I have use the HD does not infer anything about saved games. Not only does it do that, but it saves my live settings, my profiles for all the games, some music CDs, and most importantly, caches a lot of data to speed up the game and lower loading times and allow for larger areas, etc.
And your other point is equally irrational. Not only does having a HD or not having a HD not affect whether the use of other storage devices for saves (Xbox has USB-based memory cards, too), but the "game dev" doesn't really give a damn whether it's a memory key, a zip drive (yeah right!), a HDD, or whaveter. It's the system OS that handles all of that - all the devs see is "there is a space here" and "this space is X size."
'We're not going to equip [the PS3 with] a HDD by default, because no matter how much [capacity] we put in it, it won't be enough.'
Nonesense. Never came close to filling up the 8gig on my Xbox, but every game I've played has made use of the HD because they KNOW it will be there.
Of course, since the HD is optional with the PS3, devs will have to assume that it will not be there to reach a wider installed base. PS3 has just made developing for their system more difficult by releasing two products - ones with HDs and ones without.
Even just a small 4gig drive might have been helpful and inexpensive.
IF they were going to subsidize the games with ad revenue then maybe... but as current ad trends go (Cable TV, Theaters, etc..) then you won't see a nickel difference...
Actually, they do subsidize the game and they do make a difference on cable TV - one way or another, they increase the net present value of any project.
OOOooooooooo. It's not a pyramid scheme if you pay someone $10 to do a referral because rather than leaving them to expect a 'free PSP', they know they are only getting $10.
It's also not a pyramid scheme because if you have about five people - one wants an Xbox, one wants an Ipod, one wants a purse, and another wants a PSP, you can all each sign up for each other's plans and everyone gets what they want and no one is left at the bottom.
Besides, I already got the free Ipod and the free Xbox.
I think you are being silly and hypocritical. This is evident by you being a reader of/.
This site is 'splattered' with ads. Yet you read here and post. I find it silly grandstanding for you to suggest you agree with this article - as if a few billboards in a racing game or seeing a corp logo during a load screen will deter you from playing.
Yeah - Written in September of 03 - the product was announced in August of 03. Less than two years ago.

PHP is not an inherently easy language.. it's just one that lets you code sloppily and get away with it.
That's why I love it!

Please note, however, that CF costs moh-naaaay whereas PHP doesn't cost anything. I also use it for semi-enterprise stuff - works fine. ("but you can't afford CF?" - no, I'd rather save the money).

I _loved_ Rat RAce. And I only had it for the Vic20.
They showed it on G4's Attack of the Show last week.

Maybe because a sequel holds the hope - sometimes - of making money. Look at Star Trek or Superman franchises. Or Highlander.

Agreed. And it's not that it's so short it doesn't allow the customer to decide - it's so short the customer defaults to 'no.'
These numbers are completely accurate.

Another solution is that while you dl twice as fast as you ul, leave the torrent open for a few days.
Nearly every BT I have uploaded about 1.5-2.5 by the time it reaches 100%. It is a problem that in part solves itself.

It is only illogical as it applies to you because you have neither $10 to pay nor do you have 5 friends. So yes, for you, it is a pyramid scheme.
Time to play my free Xbox.
