  11. Re:Great idea... on LimeWire Brings Darknets To All · · Score: 1

I beg to differ on this one. In my own experience, I'm very selective who I let into my social neworking sites (myspace, fb, etc). When people join a social network they expose a little bit of themselves to the world and that exposure is worth the effort of filtering access to it. Also I think that social interactions online are no longer 'anonymous'; people are making social networks with other people they know or have met previously, i.e. it's more personal.

I'm curious though, no doubt darknets will be smaller than the entire network. How will people respond to the fact that they may be only downloading from one seeder vs 5? and this seeder might be on a asynchronous internet line so the download speed will probably be 5x-10x the average download speed of p2p networks today?

  12. Re:Could someone fill us in? on Build a BoxeeBox and Wean Yourself From Cable · · Score: 1

If you look at boxee there is a way to stream video from major cable networks (ABC, CBS, CNN, ABCnews, etc). For most people, this was already available if you sat at your computer, loaded a browser, and watched it. Boxee frees you from that by presenting a slick interface that looks pretty nice on 50"+ HDTV's.

Boxee also has an app plugin for browsing and streaming videos directly from netflix. No more are you limited to watching it on your desktop PC (or the flimsy interface of Windows XP if you originally had an HTPC hooked up to your TV).

One unfortunate problem though, is that ABC.go.com and netflix use Silverlight, so the ability the watch videos from those sources (at least for now) is limited to the OS X platform. (The next release will likely have it in Windows.

Boxee implements social networking with video recommendations. The problem of watching freely available content online was that it was difficult to find. Although free video RSS feeds are available on miroguide.com, the aspect of social network makes each video rss feed viral. Provided you have many friends and those friends have even a few rss video feeds, suddenly you have a lot of them to choose from.

Keep in mind that boxee is in its alpha stages. I think besides making the application itself more platform independent and stable, the team will probably clean up their social networking gateway.

Boxee won't free you from cable if the content you want to watch isn't already available online (via torrent, website, or what have you).

  15. Re:This is Big on Easier Way to Convert Proteins into Crystals · · Score: 5, Informative
Though the parent is correct, this technology greatly reduces the time and effort involved in 'crystallizing' proteins. Most common approach is to use the hanging drop method, where a drop of the sample is suspended over a highly concentrated solution. The sample concentrates due to the negative osmotic pressure and the protein 'crystallizes'. The crystallization process can be hastened by using a 'nucleant', usually a small crystal of the sample that you have previously crystallized. Also, the exact identity and composition of the concentrated solution is varied in order to find the right crystallization conditions. This is a very tedious process (imagine setting up 96 different concentrated solutions, each differing in about 1% concentration of the solutes) and time intensive.

The discovery of a 'universal' nucleant (close to the one suggested by the authors of this study) and the development of a matrix to encourage crystallization would greatly speed the screening process, and ultimately, crystallization of proteins.

  22. Recommend to get rid of (useful) error messages? on Gnome 2.6 Usability Review · · Score: 1

Less common cases like the error message shown above should also be abstracted if possible. Knowing that the operation is not permitted offers little help to the unaccustomed user. GNOME already does an outstanding job in catching many of these types of errors and translating them into something users can understand. It is the hope of the reviewers that the developers continue in this regard. I dunno I prefer to have rather verbose error messages. Though it may not mean much to the common user, it can be quite helpful if they seek help from a more knowledgeable user. Besides, why change it? all you can (usually) do is click ok anyways.
