  1. Re:Apple's service is not that great. on Why Everyone Loves Apple · · Score: 1

I too have been hit by the faulty logic board in ibooks. I've actually had two go bad: a G3 & G4 (god only knows why I bought the G4). The G3's logic board died under warrenty, so we were able to get that fixed. I ended up selling/giving it to my brother in-law and it has recently completely died. Same symptoms, the screen won't come on, which was preceded by horizontal lines going accross the screen randomly.

The G4's harddrive died, which I was able to RMA with toshiba. However, shortly after that it started exhibiting the same symptoms that the G3 had, however this time it died out of warrenty and thus Apple wanted around $600-700 to fix it. Needless to say I ended up buying a new Compaq. It's unbelievable that they knew about this problem in the G3 and didn't fix it in the G4.

I also have a 1G ipod that is barely ever used, but I frequently have to reinstall the os software on. It becomes corrupted constantly.

I don't know if these necessarily fall into customer service issues, however my only experience with apple products has shown that they are of substandard quality. There's absolutely no reason I should have 2 laptops litterally die on me in 3 years.

Um, maybe it "sucked" because Sci-fi isn't in HD yet. If you're watching an SD source upconverted on a HD set then any imperfaction in the picture is going to be magnified. Directv looks great on my 32" SD CRT (although I do see some artifacting, but I'd much prefer that to the snow that cable offers me). Don't expect to throw it on a big expensive HD set and have it look great. That's exactly why I didn't spring for HD. I'll revisit it in a couple of years though once they bring HD locals to my market and expand their HD programming offering.

Mail is another matter though. You won't still have access to that. But the easy solution is to just use 'aolname'@gmail.com or whatever else and let people know you've changed email addresses.

I like that, "Longhorn is bound to be a new WindowsME by all the signals." I hadn't thought about it like that before, but you're probably correct.

I'm pretty sure this is an upgrade I won't be making. I'm perfectly happy with XP and see no reason to upgrade (many said this about 2k). I really dont' like the fact that their preliminary stated minimum requirements are 1GHz 512MB RAM. Yes my computer exceeds that, but that will pretty much mean I'll be on the lower end of the spectrum requirements-wise. I don't want to take a step back, and I certainly don't want to have to purchase a new computer to just to run a new OS that doesn't offer me all that much.

I am hoping to buy a mac at some point though. I just need to wait until I get some other things taken care of and my job situation stabelizes. I've had my eye on a powerbook for a while, and now Tiger is making me go to www.apple.com even more than normal.

  8. Re:Sat better than cable? Whatever... on DirecTV's 1st MPEG4 Satellite Launch Successful · · Score: 1

I agree with this. Cable is going to kill satellite when it comes to HD. Satellite in the end might have more total capacity, but most if it is going to be wasted in the replication of the same content around 300 times (1500 local channels).

Cable doesn't have to provide 1500 local channels, they have to provide around 6. This leaves them plenty of room for actual HD content. My local cable company already offers me all of my locals in HD plus about 10 more HD channels than either sat company offers.

  9. Re:Satellites are linear not digital on DirecTV's 1st MPEG4 Satellite Launch Successful · · Score: 5, Informative

Actually, no they couldn't have. For one reason. Bandwidth. They are completely maxed out right now. They couldn't have added 1 more HD channel, let alone 1500 additional HD channels. Each HD channel is something like 15 SD channel.

The only reason they are able to do this is because they are going to be transmitting using a different band - KA. The current DirecTV sattelites transmit in the KU band. So they'll be using their existing orbital slots 101, 110, & 119 to broadcast on a different wavelenght.

Unfortunately this is going to be mean a larger dish will be required. Google dish network superdish for an idea of how big it is. Dish Network already does broadcast some local channels in KA band.

  10. Re:For someone not hip on the lingo on DirecTV's 1st MPEG4 Satellite Launch Successful · · Score: 2, Informative

I will confirm that a software update will not allow an HDTiVo to decode MPEG-4. TiVos are very low powered devices, and thus use hardware decoder chips, not software decoding. So they have an MPEG-2 decoder chip to complement a comparibly underpowered CPU. They can't simply push a new codec down to the TiVo to decode MPEG-4.

HD DirecTiVos will be obsolete next year.

I told her I was kind of getting tired of doing this, I keep cleaning it up and he keeps messing it up. She asked me, how does it get like this? I said, hmmm....I don't know. I didn't really want to tell her that he's probably surfing ridiculous ammounts of pRon.

Spyware sure is a problem, especially when people use IE and surf less than legitmate sites. However, if you use firefox and keep your websurfing clean, you rarely encounter any spyware.

GRRRR....I really hate being the "IT" person in my family. I spend half my time at home fixing computers.

It's a good thing that Mozilla isn't under a BSD license then.

    Mozilla uses a tri license - MPL/GPL/LGPL
    http://www.mozilla.org/MPL/

Basically it boils down to that if someone uses their source code, changes it and distributes it, they too have to provide the modified source code free of charge. I believe I also read something about not being able to change or remove logos. Much different than the BSD license you describe.

Microsoft is free to come out with their own Mozilla variant, but they would have to provide the source code, something I doubt they'd do.

Also, what motiviation do they have to mess with mozilla code? They have a lot invested in IE, which is actually pretty fast and renders pages in many cases (see broken code) better than firefox. All they need to do is add tabbed browsing and fix some security holes and they can say hey look, we don't suck as much anymore.
