This might actually make cable and satellite more expensive. We may end up paying the same price we are now for less channels because bundling actually keeps costs down.
I'm having directv installed today, and of my 125 channels I'll be getting I'll probably only watch 40 or so of them. But currently I have to pay for WE and lifetime even though I won't watch them, just like someone else has to pay for espn and fox sports, even though they don't watch them. It's a trade off, that keeps costs down.
The only way this is good for the consumer, is if they also put some sort of regulation on the content providers. Situations like the viacom / dish dispute should not happen. If a content distributor doesn't want to carry a channel, they should not be forced to, period. However dish caved and added Nick Toons. This is extortion, and hopefully it will also be addressed by Congress. That is where the real trouble lies, it's usually not the cable / sat providers forcing new unwanted channels on you, its the content producers.
I'm not sure how into the indie rock scene the slashdot crowd is, but Coheed and Cambria has a song called "I, Robot." [plyrics.com] I always thought it was a wierd song, but maybe this is what it's based on.
They're a cool band. I heard they're actually making a comic book to go along with their latest album [amazon.com]. Just thought I'd point that out.
yeah I was going to say, because the other day on my Athlon XP 1700+ I was compiling something, watching a dvd, and I still didn't notice any slow down in resposniveness.
This is with the bare.i 2.4.21 kernel on Slackware 9.0, but slack feels more responsive to begin with than anyother distro I've ever used, including gentoo.
That's nice, the guy is asking about accessiblity and you tell him to RTFA, that's a class act right there.
Come on, give people a break, not everyone is perfect like you.
Oh, and to the person who asked about the "Gn," it comes from the gnu project, which provides most of the userland applications for linux, to form GNU/Linux, because remember linux is only a kernel;-)
The thing is if the IT people had properly set up firewalls on these networks, it would also be a non issue. Yes I know you run into problems with laptops being connected to the network as well, but there should be a policy in place to handle them as well.
Actually I did get an email on my university account from the IT department regarding this vulnerability a few days ago. Good to see that my alma mater is keeping up on their patching.
I just thought of the seen in Zoolander where derik and Hansel are trying to turn on the computer. Microsoft is sitting there poking a linux box with sticks trying to figure out how it works and why it's so much more stable and secure than their beloved windows server 2003
If I were you I would make my contingency plan FreeBSD. From what I hear solaris on x86 is not nearly as good as it is on sparc, the word afterthought comes to mind. FreeBSD is an amazing OS, check out their site for the "Handbook." I've read most of it and it's by far the best software documenation you can find anywhere.
I'm currently not running FreeBSD, I'm running Gentoo, but should there be some reason why I can't run Gentoo in the future (i.e. sco has its way), I'm moving straight to FreeBSD. I don't think there will be much I'd miss.
Yeah I agree with you. For around a year I was die hard linux. I scoffed at people that used windows. But you know what, I just graduated from college, I have a job, and when I get home from work I'd rather spend my time relaxing with my girlfriend than messing with linux. Linux bacame an obsession that I actually lost sleep over. I was constantly trying to find the best distro and configure things just the way I liked them. But that never really happened, there was always something that I coudn't quite get to work right, or when I had got things set up pretty well, something would break.
So now the only os on my machine right now is XP, and its going to stay that way. I now am sane again and I actually use my computer, not just tinker with configuring it. Now I just need to start saving for a G5 and then all of my problems will be solved!
I'm sick of people arguing that the gov't is trying to pull the wool over our eyes about everything. There some things people don't need to know, for the sake of NATIONAL SECURITY.
um yeah thats exactly what it is. Amazon has two options to listen to songs, windows media or realplayer. Try it for your self. There's a huge difference.
One addition to my first post. I'm still using mostly GPL software. Mozilla, gaim, gimp, cdex. I just don't have any desire to mess with linux anymore when I can use the same apps in windows xp, "which just works."
I'm sorry, but this doesn't sound like a DRM issue in disguise at all. Seriously, everyone needs to look at things from a different perspective. I think that there should be some sort of control so people don't steal other people's works. The thing is though, if you buy the cd, you should be able to do whatever you want with the music as long as u don't give it to soemone else (i.e. make backup copies, rip it to mp3 on your computer for personal use).
On a side note, I just realized that windows media 9 kicks ass. If you go to amazon to listen to a song off a cd, listen to it in windows media, then real player. There's no comparison. WM9 has a full sound while real player sounds flat like its coming out of a tin can. Microsoft actually is making strides in something.
To simplify my life I recently wiped my drive (which had redhat 9 and freebsd 4.8 on it) and put only windows xp on it. I haven't been this productive on my pc in a long time. I'm acutally using my computer, not messing with it to get it set up right!
actually judging by the screenshot that I just saw of libranet, it looks like the crap. Knoppix has really beautiful fonts, it doesn't even look like libranet has antialiased fonts. Besides, if you just want new user land applications, Debian Woody is perfect, I'm running the Gnome 2.2 backports and they're amazing, he even just made it so the new bitsream vera fonts automatically download and install. I just had a bout with unstable and lost, so here I am again with stable (hopefully for a long time:-) ). Anyways, $70 is a lot for something you can get for free in many other forms.
I've been trying to figure out how to set up evolution to work with spam assasin. I'm running debian unstable, so I can get pretty much whatever packages I need, but I'm not really sure where to start.
Is anyone aware of any good guides or howtos, so I can RTFM (read the fine manual) and get this set up. I've been toying with just using Mozilla 1.3 w/ the built in baysean filtering, but I really kind of like the pim aspects of evolution. Thanks.
So is it safe to assume that my Radeon AIW card won't perform too well with this? I have an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ and 512 DDR memorory as well.
My shop teacher's name in middle school was Harold Crack.
Barqs doesn't have caffine.

Copy and print?
I think you mean ctrl-c and ctrl-v. Or if they're using X they could just highlight / middleclick.

Yeah I have the same problem. What's up with that?
Too bad they limit carroll's external connections to 25 on http and 25 on ftp from 9am - 5 pm. If you're on campus that's a great solution though.

wow, thats sweet, I never knew that 2k had a tcp/ip filtering in it, I guess they just added a new interface with XP and called it Personal Firewall

I've actually heard that they have some old Unix heads working on this. My Unix Professor told me about this in the spring.

I cant wait to pay sco so I can use my free software

the atari jaguar was 2 32 bit chips and was out around the time of the SNES...
AMEN.
