I'll slippery slope it for you very easily. Alphabet soup organization says they suspect this feature will help them fight terrorism, and the courts allow it because there is no reasonable expectation of privacy in a car. If I'm not mistaken (and I probably am considering how long ago I learned this), the reason the police have the right to search your vehicle without a warrant is because you are using a public road with no reasonable expectation of privacy.

How can this be abused? A politician driving with a young man or woman that is not their significant other can easily be blackmailed. A private citizen could have the same thing done to them.

I hope everyone makes a huge stink about this, and I hope the media covers it like a celebrity death. Then I hope that whoever was thinking about doing this is so ashamed of the negative publicity that they burn every last schematic, design, and prototype.

The parent is absolutely right. People like to justify Drepper's behavior by saying that it does not impact the quality of work. That justification could possibly be the stupidest and most wrong thing I've ever heard -- in the history of humankind.

There used to be this absolute tool on the gamedev.net forums, and maybe he was Drepper in disguise. The person was extremely smart, but he would go out of his way to be curt to posters. Hi s justification was that being civil and polite is not efficient. I'd be willing to cede that to him, but he, and everyone like him, miss the more important point: you're useless to the team if you can't work with the team.

What I want know is why do people do it, what drives that behavior? Do they get some kind of kick out of being unnecessarily hostile?

I propose from here onwards, all evidence suggesting that the bat died is completely disregarded. The bat made it into space, and is now enjoying life in the cosmic wind. That is all we need to know.

Watching a movie in a theater is an experience for me. I don't have state of the art DTS THX DMX 5.1 surround sound at home, and a movie screen far outdoes a TV in my opinion.

I'd say the same thing applies to the record industry too. Sure I can download all those MP3s, but it'll never compare to a concert. I'll always pay for those, because I can't reproduce them.

Maybe the value of a product drops when we can create perfect replicas at home, but there will be a source of money as long as there is something we can't replicate.

Chances are one of them got an account, and is going to give his invites away to the "lucky" few who sign up. However, if Google ever started a service like this, I'd sign up instantly. Me: "Hi, yeah, I have this problem where my character dies everytime he walks through a door."

Tech: "Hmm, interesting. Are you sure you're going through the door?"

Me: (laughing to myself) "Yeah I'm definitely going through the door."

Tech: "And your guy just drops dead?"

Me: "Exactly, and this is with almost every door"

Tech: (after a little pause) "Well, my boss is telling me this is a gameplay issue, and you should call the hint hotline. Would you like the number?"

Me: (contemplating my hate) "No...no thank you"

Your statement is wrong on so many different levels. First of all, at least in the US, people are supposed to be considered innocent until proven guilty. That means they are violating the privacy of an innocent person.

Secondly, there are moral wars being waged over things like the privacy of a criminal. You can't blindly say it's ok to violate a person's rights just because they're a criminal.

  15. Re:How is this impressive? on CMU First To Qualify For DARPA Grand Challenge · · Score: 1
Someone above was asking about how accurate the GPS data was. Stole this from the DARPA site:
NOTE: GPS data for the RDDF was collected using a NAVCOM StarFireTM GPS system that has a specified accuracy of <15 cm (or <6 inches) per the Tech Manual specs. The system provides seven (7) decimal place numerical output, which we provide in the RDDF. However, per the manual, the seventh decimal figure should not be confused as an additional degree of accuracy.

As far as Red Team's plans, I got these both from their site:
The Red Team is compiling maps for the region from Barstow to Las Vegas. Our core mapping tools are provided by TerraSim. We are investing immense human power in the compilation of these maps.
Up to ten terabytes of map data are being processed at our race facility located on-campus at Carnegie Mellon University. Mass storage is by Seagate Technologies. Mapping computers are by Intel.
That was the only mention of terabytes I could see, but I remember reading something about the vehicle holding "X" terabytes of information on board (probably less than ten).

To say that what CMU is doing is cheating or easy is just a simplification of facts. Lots of articles on the race have stated that there is a big chance that no one will complete the race this year. If CMU has made evolutionary steps to complete the race, then more power to them. Putting maps on a vehicle isn't exactly "so absurd" that it wouldn't happen with combat vehicles.

On the other hand, the 2 hour planning period is just ugly IMHO. During combat, if the path the vehicle was planning on taking is changed in anyway, it should be able to re-route. Although a human operator could plan another route for them, what if communication was lost?

However, another DARPA challenge down the road would be interesting. One that required a vehicle's team to have far less time between the actual race, and the announcement of the waypoints. Maybe even a race where teams are not told what the waypoints are, and that the vehicle has to recognize them (a big RF emitter let's say). I'm not sure if that's what the waypoints in this race are, but it would be interesting.

Sometimes we get too caught up in dogma and bias towards Windows. Being like Windows isn't bad, as long as you got a reason. However, blindly copying any DE is just plain stupid. The Maximize/Minimize/Close buttons on each window is one thing that a lot of DEs have in common. Now if someone said let's do away with that JUST because Windows does it, then that'd be idiotic.
