or needed high single CPU performance for a pooly parallized application. (Of course if your application parallizes poorly, a cluster is probably a bad choice to begin with).
Your application may parallelise at a high level but still need a good FP CPU to do the parallel bits. Thats why Cray's X1 has big vector processors linked together in a cluster. If you need to know more buy my book
That'll be why there are hill farms in the UK that can still notsell lambs due to Chernobyl fallout. Seems the rain didn't just wash the stuff (mostly ceasium IIRC) away.
Back when I was a geophysicist we used the fallout from air tests as a time marker since it was in the core regardless of where we collected them. This stuff floats quite well once you get it into the air. Now with a simple dirty radiological bomb you might not get it so far but it will spread and stay where it falls.
Add to the actual effects the physcological impact on the local population, and lots of them are going to die in the panic of evacuation, then you've got a pretty effective weapon.
But wouldn't it be better if US merchants actually compared my signiture to the one on the card. It's conviently laser etched on the back with my photo. But no one in the US seems to care to look at the back of the card.
Most other countries seem able to do this, though France is patchy as they often forget that the chip in my card didn't work by the time we get to signing.

and don't ever get me started about the idiocy of my chip being different to the ones used in other countries!
The last time I was in the States, a walmart clerk wanted to see my drivers licience before I could use my credit card. Since my GB licience is a piece of paper with out a photo, I knew from bitter experience this would take some time to explain, so I used my university ID card which has a photo and my name and "The University of Leeds" in very big letters.
Her reply "oh are you from out of state?" and then she managed to proceed with the transaction.
Or he could be one of the guys who proves that cell phones don't give you cancer. Lots of people are making a fuss about EM fields in thier houses. As far as I know there is no solid evidence one way or another - but I switched out of the field 10 years ago so I'm not as upto date as I once was.
Science works by us doing experiments, not just thinking of an idea and publishing it in the tabloid press. The more scientist we lose from research posts the worse this will become. This is especially a problem in universities as this leaves the field wide open to industry "scientists" who'll tell you whatever thier boss pays them for.
As an active member of Karl's union I know quite a bit about this story. First he's becoming a plumber for the job securtiy - he's feed up with working on short term contracts (many less than a year) for ten years. That his pay will double is a secondary matter, nice but not sufficient.
Last I heard, if the university offered him a permanent job as a scientist he'd take it. But the best thier HR department could offer was some plumbing work when he qualified.
Well I've been a postdoc for 11 years now. Why? because I like doing research and find teaching 200 undergrads something I don't like and they don't want to learn boring. Also as a post doc I get out of some (not all) of the admin that goes with being a university employee.
I've never understood why all US bills are the same size, what stops counterfiters simply washing $1 bills and reprinting them as $20s or $100s. Thus having the right paper, watermark and foil strip and only needing to get the printing right (or even just close).
This is (I believe) why UK and EURO bills get smaller with smaller denominations. So you could wash a 20 note and make a 5 note but the treasury is less concerned about this (its still ilegal though).
Should I ever find myself in such an unfortunate situation, may God have mercy on me and set me up with an MD who will prescribe adequate opioid pain relievers. Currently that is the only thing that works, period.
Too often these days MDs are paranoid about prescribing opioid pain killers, what with the DEA breathing down their necks. See The DEA's Disastrous War Against Pain-Treating Drugs for example. It is customary to encourage the patient to grin and bear it or to seek pain relief through alternative therapies like meditation etc.
Don't knock all alternative therapies with out trying them first. I was very sceptical about acupunture until I tried it for severe back pain BUT it really works. Much better pain relief than the drugs with no side effects.
Look at JUMP http://www.vividsolutions.com/jump/main.htm for an example. This is able to connect to Open GIS Consortium (OCG, www.opengis.org) web map servers so you don't even need to cart the data arround with you. A Web Map Server (WMS) sends you an image of the area of map you've asked for so it's quick and easy to down load the maps you need.
