  1. Go analog on How To Enter Equations Quickly In Class? · · Score: 1

Pen/Pencil and Paper for serious equations will beat any I/O interface anyday. Even tablet recognition pales in comparison, though direct tablet drawing might come a close second. I do this for all the notes I need to take, and as an added benefit, I'm forced to review my notes if I want to enter them onto my computer when I have more time. Plus, you can absorb the lessons better if you're not focused on the details of entering long equations into your computer.

  3. This is me on Philosophy and Computer Science Revisited · · Score: 1

I am nearly done a double degree, B.Sc in Computer Science and a BA in Philosophy. So many people tell me that "that's an interesting combination" and roll their eyes slightly, but I think that the two are more closely linked than most other fields of study, besides some of the obvious, like Math and CS. Especially when you consider the impacts that advances in AI will bring in the next decade or two, and many other aspects as well. I haven't done much to combine the actual studies of the two, besides the obvious commonalities of logics in the two, but I'll at least be able to finish my CS degree with the ability to properly write down my ideas and convey them to other people in a clear and concise manner, and that alone is worth the Phil. degree. It's not for everyone, but I think people should look into at least a few Phil courses in any of their studies.

  4. New online self on Give Up the Fight For Personal Privacy? · · Score: 0, Redundant

One of my friends made an interesting point when I mentioned that I was concerned about my privacy on Facebook, and the general loss of privacy on the web. It's coming to the point where by removing yourself from the "grid" as it were you end up standing out more and more from your other peers. While the rest of us blend in and willingly share our generic details with the likes of Facebook and Google and become just another number in the crowd, and reaping the benefits of the exchange, those who avoid giving up their info and thus avoiding the benefits of the new Web become become the unique and identifiable individuals. Of course, with all this in mind you should still be aware that everything you put on the web is eaten up by the data miners and ad machines and sinister agencies and can all be connected to you so be sure to put up only the right kind of information and use it as a chance to craft your online (and more and more the real) self into the image you want to share.

Why on earth would the "brain in the box" need to move around? If it's part of some large system it could have specialized subsystems that did all that data-collection for them. We already have autonomous robots that excel at collecting data. If they all pump this data back to some collective mind then that should easily satisfy any data requirements it has. Why these AI's of the Singularity need to resemble us in any way is beyond me.

  6. As a libertarian this is better than worse, sadly on FCC Report - TV Violence Should be Regulated · · Score: 2, Informative

Alright, I haven't read all the comments, so I hope I'm not just repeating what someone else says (I doubt it, the quality of posts around here has been weak for a while) I'm normally all for libertarianism, the government should stay the hell out of how I live my life, until it starts affecting the lives of other. But I think I have to admit that I might side with the "censorship" side of things on this one. Sadly, WAY too many people use TV to babysit, and I really don't see why we need to highlight violence when there's healthier and, well I guess, better things to highlight with the power TV has. Sex and love and doing what you can to help your fellow man aren't intrinsically void of good plots, and they can certainly lead to great ideas and stories that could help guide the impressionable to make our nations really great again. It's a shame that the people who come up with the drivel on TV, with the real power of thought-control they have, waste it on the crap that's fed to us. There are a few smart shows out there, but most of it just helps feed negative messages to the viewers, feeds that consumerist need, and leads to a wasteful life. If suggestions (sadly in the form of legal controls) from the government can help reduce negative images and (hopefully) encourage more positive thoughts in viewers then I'm forced to agree with their doing so. But of course this "censorship" will likely be politically motivated in some way or another and won't serve any purpose but that of the people who want to enact such a law, and it'll just further fuck up an already sick nation. I guess that's the reason I'm against governments sticking their grubby hands in places they shouldn't be.

"Won't somebody think of the children!?!" It's of course a noble goal, but as a Canadian I've always taken a little pride in the fairly open and uncensored access to the world we seem to get(of course I don't know if this is the case since I don't know how much more or less the rest of the world gets) and to see any sort of infringement on this irks me. There's also the issue of what counts as child-porn; I understand we've categorized http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LoliconLolicon as being under this category. I didn't even know about the existence of Lolicon until last week but they could throw all sorts of silly things under that blanket. And of course they can use this as precedent to blacklist other objectionable subjects to those in power, a very slippery cliff indeed.

The Mythbusters apprentices did the actual leg-work in breaking the myth and found that the force against the wood was too much to handle and the board continually fell out of their hands.
