ogg files, no wma files, and mplayer or xine work as good as or better than almost any M$ media player..., and asto riping everything into wma, it does suck, thats why i dislike wmp, get xmms, and xine or sompthing, dont port WMP to linux, thats pointless....
well the idea behind this post was that the server was allowing remote desktops. a 15Mb footprint per explorer session, even with 1Gb of ram, thats still fewer than 100 users...
and note that WINDOWS servers usualy.... i ran a webserver under linux for 3 years using only 256Mb of ram, all the goodies, php etc. ran fine...
i agree!, and its $80 for the UPGRADE, meaning you would have to already have a full version lyeing around. i beleave last time i checked XP pro full was like $300+, and i think home was a bit cheeper, but still thats ridicoulous!
oh and also MS's licencing scheme's suck, being locked into a certin product for years, when your in a feild that needs the ability to change on the fly, and upgrade imedently, this kind of licencing doesnt cooperate too well.....
well the only problem i have with MS is the fact that there trying to advertise a "stable" operating system, or a sever operating system. in my expirence i havent found a stable microsoft operating system yet, and instability + servers = bad things. now when i get the stability of linux, unix, or beos out of windows, ill be happy with there product, and might even shell out $500+ for a copy. untill then im sticking with what works best for me.
before this I'd been running 98SE for a long time with no problems other the odd blue screen (normal really).
Umm, i dont think any unexplained system lock is or ever should be considerd normal. just another example of MS brainwashing people again..., other than that, good post and kudoz to mormop!
open console (depending on windowmanager)
type game name in console (usualy sompthing like tribes2, ut, or ut2003)
i learned how to install, use, and some what secure linux in less than a month, im still now sure how to even begin securing windows! and the windows installers leave sompthing to bedesired... like customizeability... and why waste your time using a platform thats only good for one thing anyway? Windows is only good for games. the only reason windows is good for games is because there are lot of games for windows. Winblows = sux
im gonna get one just to see if i can get linux to install on it! i bet it will run 10x better with linux on it.... oh wait, has that been done yet? i think im a little late......
and just how much ram does explorer eat up? even with all the eye candy turned off and performance tweaked to best, explorer still eats 15Mb or ram or so. and for linux gui. WindowMaker.
if you could send a link to one of those lcd's w/ a build in 15 pin svga connector for a "few bucks more" to xvmastervx(at)hotmail(dot)com then please do, i would appreciate. however i did find a better looking, and more *useful* lcd module, if this is in anyway useful. here it is. the only diff is this one turns itself off when theres no signal detected, and it has a better viewing angle. the -only- use for this i could even remotly think of is maby previewing video on a ntsc display, built in. and even thin its an issue of convience and not usefulness.
babysitting the Windows boxen
Where can i find these "boxen", i tried the zoo, but the attendent kept saying they dont have ox's at the zoo, seems an elusive breed.
well, id doubt youd get in any trouble for sue'ing because what you did was only attempt to steal, its like walking into a walmart, and having the clerk asking you if your gonna pay for that bag of chips before you reach the door. slap on the wrist. on the other hand you doi have a point about due process etc. and i agree with you except that one detail.:-p
or, as many/.'ers already have broadband, they could just download movies off p2p networks like kazaa (and get cheep pr0n instead, but thats what most pirates want anyway), or off filetopia and get what there looking for provided they have the time and patients to figure out filetopia and accualy finish the dl;-P
i dont see where the implied DoS attack came from, but i have been tempted to push that big red button on my desk thats labled "turn off all electricity in this building", i almost did once, but the boss walked by.:-p

windows media player? WHY??

i have, it just gets annoying to, infact i even made a reg hack to start cmd inplace of explorer. i just dont like how big the footprint is.

has anyone managed to install linux on it as a stand alone usb grill? sounds like a plan....
and you would have thought they learned their lesson with ET

umm, wouldnt that defeat the puropse of the parent thread? xp looks ugly!? why would u want people to have an *ugly* desktop?
xp themes are ugly --> why would you turn themes on on a server? --> because you want users to have an xp looking desktop?.... doesnt make sence...

I can think of these three scenarios
And the third one is?...
Maby you should go back to kindergarden to learn to count and read.

7:24am www.neowin.net has been /.'ed
ok, see what your talking about now, thanx for the clairification.

umm, cuz they dont want cheep jenna pr0n. i use filetopia, cant go wrong with #FBO
