  1. Not just Americans on Bush Signs Law Targeting P2P Pirates · · Score: -1, Troll

If you break American law (e.g. this one) and live in any country (like the UK) which has an extradition treaty with the USA you can be brought to America and charged with the crime.

So if you trade with an American you can expect a free holiday in an American prison.

  2. Departmentalisation... on Microsoft to Support Linux in Virtual Server · · Score: 5, Insightful

You need to keep in mind that Microsoft is a very large company and each department is so large that it is almost like a company within its self. So if it is bad for the Windows Server team that the Virtual Server team has done this, well too bad. The Virtual Server team needs to keep their product competitive and they are just telling it as it is; they are an x86 system virtualizer and need to support popular x86 platforms, if they didn't then they deserve to die off.

This is no different than when Microsoft released an Office for Mac. Naturally the Windows platform teams and managers didn't much care for that but Office saw it as an opportunity. The people doing the name calling are the ones within Microsoft that are competing against Linux not the ones that couldn't care less either way or want to port their projects to Linux to improve their customer base.

In my opinion, when we see a dominant Linux platform (e.g. desktop environment, tool set etc) then we will also see a copy of Microsoft Office released. Microsoft will follow the market with most of its products.

Show all the CGI in the trailers you want, doesn't make it a good film... You notice how the original star wars trailers talk about an experience where as these new ones talk about emotions that morons will find appealing (e.g. how cool is it to blow stuff up!)

Lets hope this one will be better than it looks.

  4. Re:Lazy / Time Consuming... on Survey Shows Admins Avoiding SP2 · · Score: 1

You are correct. But it is not unusual to find three or more "Base Systems" on a network. You would have to design a patch procedure for all of your base systems and test it; which would be very time consuming (thus the problem).

  5. Lazy / Time Consuming... on Survey Shows Admins Avoiding SP2 · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is a 200Mb file that you need to send to every computer on the corp. network, so even if you were ready to start deploying SP2 you couldn't do so over night.

Further more SP2 adds LOTS of functionality and changes the behaviour of Windows and thus is extremely likely to break things on a corp. setup.

So I am not at all shocked that network admins haven't all installed it yet.. But I bet you if you changed the survey to - "How many network admins are installing (Via Slipstream) SP2 on new installations?" you would get a very positive and different result.

I believe this kind of thing is misguided rubbish spread by those too ignorant to say otherwise and rather baseless within its supporting evidence.

If I was to be asked why I think there aren't so many women in science and maths, I would put it down to two things - A. Social Gender Roles / Attitudes and B. Opportunities / Encouragement.
(Yes! A and B are linked)

Notice that these things have NOTHING to do with 'natural ability' at all (whatever that is) and more to do with the society as we live.
