  1. Re:Giving Comcast Props on Comcast and Net Speed Tests · · Score: 1

Actually I get really high burst speeds, but if you a long download of >10-15 seconds it will drop to your 6-8 megabits a sec rate. It confuses all the speed testers as basically any large transfer for the first so many seconds will go very fast, and its just after that the speed really drops. Best way is to just downlod a large file and see what the speeds are like 20 seconds in.

  2. Not overly bad, combined with some others bad. on MS Word Zero-Day Exploit Found · · Score: 5, Insightful

This type of spam isn't too bad given traditional spam methods, as smarter users won't open attachments from people they don't know. The dumb ones generally dont know a word doc from an EXE so hopefully they are also avoiding most attachments. However there have been a few articles on the future of spam and local data mining. Consider what would happen if the next virus your co-worker got looked through their emails, found the last word document they sent out, and then copied that but embedded this exploit. They might even say, its been revised please have another look. The chances you wouldn't open this are extremely low, and especially when you are opening a normally okay attachment. It is coming from someone you know, from their computer, through their isp, and even is styled the same way as normal. The question is how will we attempt to combat such things? It doesn't just have to do with holes in microsoft office, or any other format too. When local data mining is combined with exploits in any other common formats (give the image exploits of other os's even) you now have a delivery method that can almost promise execution.

  3. 15% is not such a small amount... on Gamers Don't Care About In-Game Ads · · Score: 1

Well I'm not so sure that gaming companies will consider dropping 15% of their customers for ingame ads. In addition as it seems its the heavy gamers who object the most, they may be the ones you don't want to piss off (as they most likely are the ones driving your 3rd party modifications). In addition I am not sure exactly what their numbers mean, 1/3rd will 'likely' play games with ads, how is this different than 'makes no difference'? (Does that mean that 1/3rd is more drawn to playing a game with ads then one without). It also doesn't talk about exactly what it considers advertising, and simply surveyed gamers. What people may tell you they will do and what they will do are frequently two different things. I doubt any hardcore battlefield fans wouldn't play battlefield 2142 if there was Coke graffiti on the side of a building.

They will happily do what they want and often may take money, they do not follow any real guidelines and you are often left out in the cold without them helping you. Sadly there is not a whole lot one can do when you run into bad luck. Unfortunately it can be hard to transfer money with others, and so you are left forced to deal with paypal. Microsoft purposed the death of folders back when they announced the WinFS system. The idea of an SQL or Database file system where queries are performed more often than direct references isn't new. While Microsoft is not releasing WinFS with longhorn, much of their search capabilities and ability to group files into multiple spots and 'death of folders' will still be occurring. Obviously apple is the first to give a solid attempt at implementing this, hopefully it will make organization far easier;)

Both are illegal(take a look at the EULA), and downloading is easier and will still allow you to upgrade to SP2.

These "flaws" are not really that big of a deal. The idea of warning is so that files are not run afterwards by mistake. They give an exploit in which someone opens cmd.exe, then drags the file into it. Well if the user will follow along and execute some command they suggest, then things are already out the window. In addition the other exploit talks about overwriting a current file and it not showing a warning, once again if they can get you to overwrite a file on your hard drive with their file then you are already gone.

  12. Gentoo is one of the best linux distribs, and here on Gentoo Linux Announces Gentoo Linux 2004.1 · · Score: 4, Interesting

Gentoo really is a great operating system, and maybe even for beginners. One of Gentoo's many strengths is the portage system. The portage system is a easy to use system that allows you to build just about any application from source automatically (and often with Gentoo optimizations). It can automatically build all the dependencies for the program too, saving you much time and effort. The portage system also supports binaries (must mention to avoid stoning) however that is often only used in replication systems. Since you can easily setup your own portage mirrors you can create your own custom packages (either that compile from source or are binaries) and easily deploy across your own servers. This would allow you to configure packages on one machine and then just distribute the binaries across duplicate machines if you wished (as I have heard of being done). I also have found Gentoo emerges rarely fail when compared to some of the problems you can run into with RPM. Another large benefit of gentoo is it doesn't install anything that isn't needed to clutter your system up. It will install the bare bones, (ssh, etc) and then you can emerge anything you want. This is much nicer than most OS's which will load it with crap from the start. It is one of the most configurable distributions I have seen, and every Gentoo install is truly unique. Again, while it may give you the barebones to start it takes little work (minus the cpu time to compile) to get it to where you want it. As I said earlier, I think Gentoo may even be a bit beginner friendly. While setup is a bit long and not nearly as easy as something like Redhat, they have a very easy to follow tutorial which walks you through it step by step that I think most beginners could follow. In addition, they have 3 different ways to install Gentoo. A live cd version that is basically bootable and then you have 3 different stages you can choose from. Stage One is a bit insane, for those who really need total control over what is installed. For most people Stage Two is fine as it still compiles virtually everything from scratch, giving you a ton of control, just saves some time over Stage One. Stage Three is for those who just need something fast or are a bit new, and can install binaries of various things to save you compile time and easy of install. This makes Gentoo truly amazing.

While it does say that using the current magnetized bit storage system has a speed limit that is 1000 times the current, it is only with this method of storage. Hopefully by the time we could hit this limit we will have a new method of storage. Besides, if my data could be written at 1000x the max of current maybe I won't need memory any more (or maybe our storage will be memory). Anyone have any ideas what we will be storing at that speed? (other than everything happening around us and everyone else so we have instant replay on life).

  15. $33 cd? It is going to decrease profit on RIAA's Nasty Easter Egg · · Score: 4, Insightful

That would put an eleven track cd at $33 depending on exactly how high they get the rate to be per song. As the article points out no online store is really make a profit as it is, if you increase the price of songs some stores will simply have to shutdown. By driving the price up I would bet they will make less money, as it will just make it more worthwhile for piracy. Someone might not mind paying $0.99 a song and have it instantly, but if you make it three times that many people will find other ways to get their music.

  17. WinFS WILL be in the next version, just no network on Microsoft Clips Longhorn · · Score: 5, Informative

The /. Summary says the "Full new file system feature has been moved to Blackcomb" and while true, it is misleading. The article actually says WinFS is still going to be in the next version of Windows (which is what it is talking about), it simply won't work over the network, meaning file shares won't work in the same way. This is a lot different from it being completely removed, as it is one of Longhorn's biggest features. Having this over network would be completely insane for most situations too. With many servers not upgrading to this file sharing would have to support the old version anyway so that corporate environments could function without upgrading everything. In addition, while the WinFS has the possibility of being a great help to individuals, it would be much harder to use over a clouded network environment.

  18. Gentoo is something of a middle ground. on Build From Source vs. Packages? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Gentoo is a great OS as instead of having binary packaged systems, it builds everything from source but can build it effeciently and automatically. In addition it can allow you to just use it to manage the source and you compile it yourself. If you were dealing with many systems you could setup your own gentoo sync server and distribute custom copies of various packages exactly to your specs and compiling details. In addition it can easily determine dependencies, and even install them for you if needed. Gentoo is kind of like a bare bones OS that simply makes it easy to install whatever you want and rather helps shortcut the process of dealing with installing things by compiling things for you.
