I could point out issues like the oil companies are making only 9 cents per gallon of profit which would put them in lower area's of margin with industry but since the world as a whole is consuming record volume of oil that naturally they would achieve record profit. Or that around 30-40% of there profits go back into R&D, but hey I don't want to rain on your parade.

What in the heck are you talking about? Everybody in just about all branches agree that we need more HUMINT. The problem is that those resources were abused and left to dwindle. The problem is that to rebuild the HUMINT takes many years to just get a footing. The electronic collection is just a stop-gap measure with some potential depending on many complicated factors.
The real problem is that in the US society, the security will always be one step behind for one simple reason. Our system is designed for freedom first. This is very different from other systems that work off the belief that the government is first and the people are second. Once our system here in the US changes to the latter, we are in serious trouble.

The quality, maintainability and ability to add features to code written in higher level languages (C, C++ and such) is light-years ahead of ASM. If you have a "good developer" and a good compiler, they can get so darn close to the performance of ASM it is scary. I don't care how "crappy" the produced ASM code looks, it is performance that counts. Maintaining is not an issue since the ASM code is not what is suppported, it is the higher level language code that is supported.
